This study investigated German secondary school students’ attitudes toward physical education. Results have the intention to reveal what attitudes towards physical education German students have and which factors influence these attitudes. The study sample contained students from the different school types Gymnasium, Realschule, and Haupt-/Werkrealschule. The students were surveyed via questionnaire that was developed based on validated research instruments from prior studies in the field. Data was analyzed integrating independent variables such as students' gender, physical education grade, grade point average, body mass index, socioeconomic status, type of school, citizenship, and the exercise and physical activity behavior of students, their parents and their peers.

Based on the Washington State standards, the ultimate goal of physical education curriculum is to successfully direct students into becoming lifelong, healthy, physically active citizens. Analysis of the Cheney School District's curriculum by its teachers will allow for adjustments to be made to the revised curriculum before it is complete. The outcomes of this study will aid in those adjustments. Teachers were mailed demographical surveys as well as Kulinna and Silverman's Teachers' Attitudes Towards Physical Education Curriculum (TATPEC) survey. This study took place in the spring of 2005 as to allow teachers at least one year of teaching experience using their current curriculum. Nine teachers participated and returned their surveys for analysis which was done using SPSS 12.0 for Windows. A factor analysis was done comparing each of the four outcome goals, with significance set at p.= .05. Results showed that physical activity and fitness was ranked of the highest importance and was followed by self-actualization, motor skill development, and social development, in that order. The implications of these findings are that fitness and health have taken a precedent over skill and self and social development. This could lead to a change in curricula that could have astronomical effects on the adults of the future. Cheney School District needs to create a balance of the four outcome goals to create the well rounded students that will soon be the adults of tomorrow"--Document.

Book excerpt: Abstract: The purpose of this study was to analyze high school physical education teachers' attitudes and understandings about culturally relevant pedagogy (CRP) and teaching African American males within urban high schools. The participants were 40 certified physical education teachers randomly sampled from two large urban high school districts. The research design was descriptive survey (Fraenkel & Wallen, 1990). Data were collected with a demographic questionnaire and a Teachers' Attitudes about African American Male Students survey scale, which was developed and validated for this study. The teachers' demographic data were analyzed descriptively. The scale data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential procedures (Shavelson, 1988). The physical education teachers expressed mostly favorable attitudes about teaching African American male students. However, the teachers' attitudes tended to vary as a function of their gender and ethnic status. For example, the female teachers tended to ascribe greater importance to teaching in a culturally relevant manner than did the male teachers. Moreover, the African American teachers had higher mean scores on the scale's dimensions of culture and communities; establishing social relationships; and the importance of using and understanding CRP than did the White teachers. The findings and implications are discussed regarding the teachers' attitudes and understandings about culturally relevant pedagogy and teaching African American males at urban high schools.

Pre-service teachers (PSTs) often enter teacher preparation programs with preconceptions or beliefs that often affect their receptivity to teacher education. While there is widespread acceptance as to the importance of examining teacher belief structures, relatively few current studies have focused on the value orientations and self-efficacy beliefs of pre-service physical education teacher education (PETE) students. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine PSTs’ beliefs regarding teaching physical education on entry into to a PETE program and throughout various phases of the pedagogical sequence. Methods: The current study employed mixed-methodologies in an attempt to capture information from three different cohorts of PSTs at multiple time points within their PETE program. Data were collected during the semester using a demographic survey, the Value Orientation Inventory-2, the Physical Education Teaching Efficacy Scale (PETES), and semi-structured interviews. Data were analyzed inductively by data source and deductively when comparing all data sources. Profiles were created for each class cohort in an attempt to identify the value orientations, level of self-efficacy, change in value orientations and attitudes over a semester, and the change in self-efficacy over a semester. Results: Descriptive analysis of the VOI-2 survey showed cohort one and two were unsure of their value orientations while cohort three PSTs who were enrolled in the student teaching practicum exhibited a high priority for the Discipline Mastery value orientation. Repeated measures ANOVA of the PETES scale revealed significant differences over time for all cohorts but not between cohorts. Qualitative results revealed all three cohorts exhibited defined attitudes and perceptions of physical education and gained efficacy in teaching over the course of the semester. Discussion: This case study of PETE within a single program suggested that there are specific attractors and repellers for those who elect to major in physical education and these ideas affect their beliefs. Accordingly, targeted recruitment strategies should be employed to entice the most qualified individuals into this profession. Findings suggested that PSTs perceived secondary physical education as non-academic and therefore teacher educators need to question their effectiveness of altering PSTs’ apprenticeship of observation and associated subjective warrants, despite evidence of some evolution. Teacher educators also need to address the tensions between focusing on sport-oriented content or health-oriented content, as the teacher and coaching role conflict continues to plague future teachers.
