Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mean curvature of a surface is an extrinsic parameter measuring how the surface is curved in the three-dimensional space. A surface whose mean curvature is zero at each point is a minimal surface, and it is known that such surfaces are models for soap film. There is a rich and well-known theory of minimal surfaces. A surface whose mean curvature is constant but nonzero is obtained when we try to minimize the area of a closed surface without changing the volume it encloses. An easy example of a surface of constant mean curvature is the sphere. A nontrivial example is provided by the constant curvature torus, whose discovery in 1984 gave a powerful incentive for studying such surfaces. Later, many examples of constant mean curvature surfaces were discovered using various methods of analysis, differential geometry, and differential equations. It is now becoming clear that there is a rich theory of surfaces of constant mean curvature. In this book, the author presents numerous examples of constant mean curvature surfaces and techniques for studying them. Many finely rendered figures illustrate the results and allow the reader to visualize and better understand these beautiful objects. The book is suitable for advanced undergraduates, graduate students and research mathematicians interested in analysis and differential geometry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This carefully written book is an introduction to the beautiful ideas and results of differential geometry. The first half covers the geometry of curves and surfaces, which provide much of the motivation and intuition for the general theory. The second part studies the geometry of general manifolds, with particular emphasis on connections and curvature. The text is illustrated with many figures and examples. The prerequisites are undergraduate analysis and linear algebra. This new edition provides many advancements, including more figures and exercises, and--as a new feature--a good number of solutions to selected exercises.

Book excerpt: In this dissertation new constant mean curvature surfaces in homogeneous 3-manifolds are constructed. They arise as sister surfaces of Plateau solutions. The first example, a two-parameter family of MC H surfaces in ∑(k) x R with H ∈ [0,1/2] and k + 4H2 ≤ 0, has genus 0,2 k ends and k-fold dihedral symmetry, k ≥ 2. The existence of the minimal sister follows from the construction of a mean convex domain. The projection of the domain is non-convex. The second example is an MC 1/2 surface in H2 ∈ R with k ends, genus 1 and k-fold dihedral symmetry, k ≥ 3. One has to solve two period problems in the construction. The first period guarantees that the surface has exactly one horizontal symmetry. For the second period the control of a horizontal mirror curve proves the dihedral symmetry. For H=1/2 all surfaces are Alexandrov-embedded.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first two chapters of this frequently cited reference provide background material in Riemannian geometry and the theory of submanifolds. Subsequent chapters explore minimal submanifolds, submanifolds with parallel mean curvature vector, conformally flat manifolds, and umbilical manifolds. The final chapter discusses geometric inequalities of submanifolds, results in Morse theory and their applications, and total mean curvature of a submanifold. Suitable for graduate students and mathematicians in the area of classical and modern differential geometries, the treatment is largely self-contained. Problems sets conclude each chapter, and an extensive bibliography provides background for students wishing to conduct further research in this area. This new edition includes the author's corrections.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to introduce the reader to two interesting topics in geometry which have developed over the last fifteen years, namely, total mean curvature and submanifolds of finite type. The theory of total mean curvature is the study of the integral of the n-th power of the mean curvature of a compact n-dimensional submanifold in a Euclidean m-space and its applications to other branches of mathematics. The relation of total mean curvature to analysis, geometry and topology are discussed in detail. Motivated from these studies, the author introduces and studies submanifolds of finite type in the last chapter. Some applications of such submanifolds are also given. This book is self-contained. The author hopes that the reader will be encouraged to pursue his studies beyond the confines of the present book.

Book excerpt: Quite simply, this book offers the most comprehensive survey to date of the theory of semiparallel submanifolds. It begins with the necessary background material, detailing symmetric and semisymmetric Riemannian manifolds, smooth manifolds in space forms, and parallel submanifolds. The book then introduces semiparallel submanifolds and gives some characterizations for their class as well as several subclasses. The coverage moves on to discuss the concept of main symmetric orbit and presents all known results concerning umbilic-like main symmetric orbits. With more than 40 published papers under his belt on the subject, Lumiste provides readers with the most authoritative treatment.

Book excerpt: This book contains an up-to-date survey and self-contained chapters on complex slant submanifolds and geometry, authored by internationally renowned researchers. The book discusses a wide range of topics, including slant surfaces, slant submersions, nearly Kaehler, locally conformal Kaehler, and quaternion Kaehler manifolds. It provides several classification results of minimal slant surfaces, quasi-minimal slant surfaces, slant surfaces with parallel mean curvature vector, pseudo-umbilical slant surfaces, and biharmonic and quasi biharmonic slant surfaces in Lorentzian complex space forms. Furthermore, this book includes new results on slant submanifolds of para-Hermitian manifolds. This book also includes recent results on slant lightlike submanifolds of indefinite Hermitian manifolds, which are of extensive use in general theory of relativity and potential applications in radiation and electromagnetic fields. Various open problems and conjectures on slant surfaces in complex space forms are also included in the book. It presents detailed information on the most recent advances in the area, making it valuable for scientists, educators and graduate students.
