Book excerpt: Over the past five years, through a continually increasing wave of activity in the physics community, supergravity has come to be regarded as one of the most promising ways of unifying gravity with other particle interaction as a finite gauge theory to explain the spectrum of elementary particles. Concurrently im portant mathematical works on the arena of supergravity has taken place, starting with Kostant's theory of graded manifolds and continuing with Batchelor's work linking this with the superspace formalism. There remains, however, a gap between the mathematical and physical approaches expressed by such unanswered questions as, does there exist a superspace having all the properties that physicists require of it? Does it make sense to perform path integral in such a space? It is hoped that these proceedings will begin a dialogue between mathematicians and physicists on such questions as the plan of renormalisation in supergravity. The contributors to the proceedings consist both of mathe maticians and relativists who bring their experience in differen tial geometry, classical gravitation and algebra and also quantum field theorists specialized in supersymmetry and supergravity. One of the most important problems associated with super symmetry is its relationship to the elementary particle spectrum.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is aimed at graduate students and researchers in physics and mathematics who seek to understand the basics of supersymmetry from a mathematical point of view. It provides a bridge between the physical and mathematical approaches to the superworld. The physicist who is devoted to learning the basics of supergeometry can find a friendly approach here, since only the concepts that are strictly necessary are introduced. On the other hand, the mathematician who wants to learn from physics will find that all the mathematical assumptions are firmly rooted in physical concepts. This may open up a channel of communication between the two communities working on different aspects of supersymmetry. Starting from special relativity and Minkowski space, the idea of conformal space and superspace is built step by step in a mathematically rigorous way, and always connecting with the ideas and notation used in physics. While the book is mainly devoted to these important physical examples of superspaces, it can also be used as an introduction to the field of supergeometry, where a reader can ease into the subject without being overwhelmed with the technical difficulties. Contents:Introduction to SupergeometryThe Ordinary Minkowski and Conformal SpacesSupersymmetry in PhysicsThe Minkowski and Conformal SuperspacesDeformations of the Minkowski and Conformal SuperspacesAppendices:CategoriesRepresentability CriterionLie Superalgebras and Lie Supergroups of Classical TypeSuper Harish-Chandra PairsQuantum Supergroups Readership: Graduate students and researchers in mathematics and physics interested in supersymmetry. Keywords:Superspaces;Supersymmetry;Supergeometry;Quantum Groups;Conformal Group;Minkowski;SuperminkowskiKey Features:Comprehensible introduction to supergeometry: why the algebraic geometric framework is essentialThe superspaces chosen in this book allow us to introduce gradually concepts such as supergroups and homogeneous superspaces while, at the same time working out particular cases that are, both, non-trivial from a mathematical point of view and very important from the physical point of viewA further step is taken towards non-commutative geometry, although not introducing all its machinery: already at the level of quantum deformation the problem is involved and interesting. The construction may well show a path towards the formulation of physical theories on quantum spaces

Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive, detailed and self-contained account of four dimensional simple supersymmetry and supergravity. It will be an indispensable source of reference for advanced graduate students, postdoctoral and faculty researchers alike working in quantum field theory, high energy physics, gravity theory, mathematical physics and applied mathematics. The authors develop the subject in its superfield formulation but where appropriate for illustration, analogy and comparison with conventional field theory, they use the component formulation. Throughout the book the authors develop their material in detail with calculation and full discussions of the fundamental ideas and motivations. They discuss many subjects which until now could only be found in the research literature. In addition they present a plethora of new results. The result is the most comprehensive book yet produced on the fundamentals of supersymmetry and supergravity. After studying this book readers should be well prepared to pursue independent research in any area of supersymmetry and supergravity.

Book excerpt: This book is the proceedings of the 11th Kongsberg seminar, held at the Norwegian Mining Museum in the city of Kongsberg, about 70 km Southwest of Oslo. The Kongs berg district is known for numerous Permian vein deposits, rich in native silver. Mining activity in the area lasted for more than 300 years, finally ceasing in 1957. The first eight Kongsberg seminars, organized by professor Arne Bj0rlykke, now director of the Norwegian Geological Survey, were focused on ore-forming processes. These seminars have always been a meeting point for people with a variety of geological backgrounds. Since 1995, the Kongsberg seminars have focussed on geological processes, rather than on specific geological systems, and the selection of invited speakers has been strongly influenced by their interest in the dynamics of geological systems. In 1995 and 1996, various aspects of fluid flow and transport in rocks, were emphasized. The first "Kongsberg proceedings" (of the 1995 seminar) published by Chapman and Hall (Jamtveit and Yardley, 1997) contained 17 chapters dealing with a wide range of topics from field based studies of the effects of fluid flow in sedimentary and metamorphic rocks to computer simulations of flow in complex porous and fractured media. In 1997, the focus was changed to growth, and dissolution processes in geological systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: defined as elements of Grassmann algebra (an algebra with anticom muting generators). The derivatives of these elements with respect to anticommuting generators were defined according to algebraic laws, and nothing like Newton's analysis arose when Martin's approach was used. Later, during the next twenty years, the algebraic apparatus de veloped by Martin was used in all mathematical works. We must point out here the considerable contribution made by F. A. Berezin, G 1. Kac, D. A. Leites, B. Kostant. In their works, they constructed a new division of mathematics which can naturally be called an algebraic superanalysis. Following the example of physicists, researchers called the investigations carried out with the use of commuting and anticom muting coordinates supermathematics; all mathematical objects that appeared in supermathematics were called superobjects, although, of course, there is nothing "super" in supermathematics. However, despite the great achievements in algebraic superanaly sis, this formalism could not be regarded as a generalization to the case of commuting and anticommuting variables from the ordinary Newton analysis. What is more, Schwinger's formalism was still used in practically all physical works, on an intuitive level, and physicists regarded functions of anticommuting variables as "real functions" == maps of sets and not as elements of Grassmann algebras. In 1974, Salam and Strathdee proposed a very apt name for a set of super points. They called this set a superspace.
