Book excerpt: This report is a compilation of fires at underground metal/nonmetal mines that occurred between January 1, 1978, and December 31, 1986, in the United States. The fires listed in this report were confirmed in several ways. First, computer-generated Accident/Injury Abstracts from the Mine Safety and Health Administration's (MSHA) Health and Safety Analysis Center (HSAC) in Denver, Colorado were reviewed. This information is provided to MSHA by the metal/nonmetal mining companies. Secondly, accident reports prepared by MSHA inspectors after an investigation were reviewed. Generally, the criteria that is used by MSHA to determine if a fire is reportable is that it either was not extinguished within 30 minutes of discovery, as per 30 CFR, Part 50.2(h)(b), or it involved a serious injury. Also, all Metal/Nonmetal Districts were contacted and each did provide information to make this report possible. It is important to note that this listing, to the knowledge of the Industrial Safety Division (ISD), is complete, but that other fires may have occurred with a duration exceeding 30 minutes.
