Book excerpt: Concludes that although adequate sleep is the only 100 percent effective "countermeasure" for sleepiness, there are other countermeasures to help make driving safer. Several of the key countermeasures include: education of high-risk populations, the general driving public, and other key groups, such as law enforcement personnel, new technologies to detect and warn drowsy drivers, roadway countermeasures such as continuous shoulder rumble strips and other roadway treatments, increased use of rest areas, regulatory and judicial action.

This book was released on 2016-09-12 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are approximately 4,000 fatalities in crashes involving trucks and buses in the United States each year. Though estimates are wide-ranging, possibly 10 to 20 percent of these crashes might have involved fatigued drivers. The stresses associated with their particular jobs (irregular schedules, etc.) and the lifestyle that many truck and bus drivers lead, puts them at substantial risk for insufficient sleep and for developing short- and long-term health problems. Commercial Motor Vehicle Driver Fatigue, Long-Term Health and Highway Safety assesses the state of knowledge about the relationship of such factors as hours of driving, hours on duty, and periods of rest to the fatigue experienced by truck and bus drivers while driving and the implications for the safe operation of their vehicles. This report evaluates the relationship of these factors to drivers' health over the longer term, and identifies improvements in data and research methods that can lead to better understanding in both areas.

Book excerpt: Dr. Sudhansu Chokroverty—a world-recognized expert in sleep medicine—presents the third edition of Sleep Disorders Medicine for the latest developments in this rapidly expanding specialty, with coverage of neuroscience and clinical application. In addition to summarizing basic science and important technological aspects of diagnosis and treatment, this edition presents new chapters—on sleep and memory consolidation, neuroimaging, and more—in a color layout that makes it easy to access the latest advances in the field. The text’s manageable size and logical, multi-disciplinary approach make it the right choice for newcomers and experienced clinicians alike. Covers all aspects of sleep medicine in a practical, logical format divided into three sections: the basic science of sleep physiology, neuroanatomy, and biochemistry; the technical methods of recording; and a clinical approach to patients with sleep complaints. Represents the breadth of knowledge across disciplines through the contributions of 50 prominent names in the field of sleep medicine. Provides a multidisciplinary approach to the diagnosis and management of sleep disorders with coverage of related fields such as pulmonology, otolaryngology, and psychiatry. Includes a Glossary of Terms adapted from the American Sleep Disorders Association for quick reference to the sleep terminology used throughout the text. Demonstrates how recent basic science advances affect clinical medicine through new chapters on Sleep Deprivation and Sleepiness; Sleep and Memory Consolidation; Neuroimaging in Sleep and Sleep Disorders; Nutrition and Sleep; Nature and Treatment of Insomnia; Evolution of Sleep from Birth through Adolescence; Sleep-Disordered Breathing in Children and Women’s Sleep. Improves on the clarity and consistency of the text with a new, completely redrawn art program, including full-color illustrations in the clinical section that enhances diagnostic material.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We estimate the labor supply curve for long-haul truck drivers in the United States, applying ordinary least squares regression to a survey of truck drivers in the United States. We start with the standard model of the labor supply curve and then develop two novel extensions of the standard model, incorporating pay level and pay method, testing the target earnings hypothesis. We distinguish between long-haul and short-haul jobs driving commercial motor vehicles. Truck and bus drivers choose between long-distance jobs requiring very long hours of work away from home and short-distance jobs generally requiring fewer hours. The labor supply curve exhibits a classic backward bending shape reflecting drivers' preference to work until they reach target earnings. Above target earnings, at a "safe rate" for truck drivers, they trade labor for leisure; they work fewer hours, leading to greater highway safety. While other research has shown that higher paid truck and bus drivers are safer, this is the first study showing why higher paid drivers are safer. Drivers work fewer hours at a higher pay rate and likely have less fatigue. Pay rates also have implications for driver health because worker health deteriorates as working time exceeds 40 hours.

Book excerpt: Because of the significant number of heavy truck-related fatalities and the significant role of fatigue in such accidents the Board initiated this study of single-vehicle heavy truck accidents to examine the role of specific factors such as drivers' patterns of duty and sleep, in fatigue-related heavy truck accidents and to determine potential remedial actions. The purpose of the Board's study was to examine the factors that affect driver fatigue and not the statistical incidence of fatigue. The study analyzes data from 107 single-vehicle heavy truck accidents in which the driver survived. Volume 1 of the study contains the Board's analysis of the data and its conclusions and recommendations. Volume 2 of the study contains the summaries of the 107 accidents. The safety issues discussed in the report are (a) the factors that affect fatigue-related accidents; (b) the adequacy of the Federal Highway Administration's hours of service regulations; and (c) the adequacy of truckdrivers' understanding of the factors affecting fatigue. Safety recommendations concerning these issues were made to the Federal Highway Administration, the Professional Truck Driver Institute of America, the American Trucking Associations, Inc, the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance, the National Private Truck Council, the Independent Truck Owner Operators, the Owner-Operator Independent Driver's Association, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, and the National Industrial Transportation League.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many North Americans are affected by mental health disorders (MHD) each year [1,2]. One of the most common MHDs is major depression [1,2]. Major depression has many costs for the individual and the economy [3-5]. Those with depression are more likely to experience difficulties sleeping, chronic fatigue, poor physical health, and are at risk of committing suicide when compared to non-depressed individuals [1,6,7]. The overall risk of mortality is higher among those with depression than those without [5]. On the economic level, depression is associated with an increased number of missed days at work (absenteeism) and poor productivity at work (presenteeism) [5]. Depression is estimated to cost the U.S. economy $36.6 billion per year in lost worker productivity [5]. Certain occupations put individuals at greater risk for depression than others. One of these occupations includes long-haul truck drivers. The risk of depression in trucking is higher when compared to at least 19 other occupational types [1,2,8-11]. Long-haul truck driving involves delivering freight to distant locations [12,13]. Truckers are usually on the road for several days at a time [14]. Many also drive overnight and are often alone during their shifts and their work breaks [14,15]. They also experience tight delivery timeliness and are often paid based on how far they drive, or how much freight they can deliver [13,16]. The working conditions of long-haul truckers can result in feels of social isolation and can lead to poor sleep and fatigue [14,15,17]. Many truckers have also reported that they experience stress due to tight and unrealistic delivery deadlines, poor road conditions, and violence at work [16].
