Book excerpt: Excerpt from Late Blight and Rot of Potatoes Caused by the Fungus Phytophthora Infestans, De Bary These three processes of spore formation, germination and infection can take place only in the presence of sufficient moisture and a suitable temperature. Both spores and swarm spores are quickly killed by drought and sunlight. This partly explains why it is that, although the fungus is present in isolated plants from the time they reach the surface of the ground. It does not spread to any extent until a month, or perhaps two, later. Another reason may be that the plant is more susceptible at and after blossoming time than m its earlier stages. Book Synopsis Plant Relationships Part B by : George Carroll
Download or read book Plant Relationships Part B written by George Carroll and published by Springer. This book was released on 1997-08-06 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Part A and Part B of the fifth of twelve volumes of The Mycota deal with the mechanisms of interactions between fungi and plants and consider pathogenic as well as mutualistic associations. Nobody involved in the manipulation of plant populations can afford to ignore the fungi, so pervasive and important are fungus/plant interactions for the well-being of plant communities, both managed and natural. Consequently, these volumes will be of interest to a broad range of professionals involved in agriculture, forestry, horticulture, and conservation as well as plant pathology, mycology, ecology, and evolution.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Late Blight and Rot of Potatoes Caused by the Fungus Phytophthora Infestans (Mont;) De Bary Late blight is unquestionably the most Widely spread and oftentimes the most destructive disease affecting the potato. It is capable of destroying, with remarkable rapidity, the entire growth of the potato plant, and also of causing a very prominent tuber rot. It occurs in practically all potato growing sections of the world and, under favourable circumstances, has caused serious losses. Download or read book Durability of Disease Resistance written by Th. Jacobs and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-02-02 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From February 24 -28, 1992 an international symposium on Durability of Disease Resistance was held at the International Agricultural Centre in Wageningen, the Netherlands. The symposium, organized by the Department of Plant Breeding of Wageningen Agricultural University and the Centre for Plant Breeding and Repro duction Research, CPRO-DLO, was part of the DGIS funded programme Durable Resistance in Developing Countries. Without any form of prevention or protection nearly all crops will be seriously or even severely damaged by a range of pathogens. In modern agriculture man has been able to control many if not most pathogens using i) pesticides, ii) phyto sanitary methods such as control of seed and plant material in order to start a crop disease free, iii) agronomic measures such as crop rotation, iv) disease resis tance or combinations of these measures. Over the years the use of pesticides has increased enormously and so did the pro blems associated with pesticide use, such as environmental pollution and building of resistance and tolerance to these pesticides in the pathogens. The use of resis tance too increased strongly over the years and here too problems arose.
