Book excerpt: Studies of the 3D structure of the nucleon encoded in Transverse Momentum Dependent distribution and fragmentation functions of partons and Generalized Parton Distributions are among the key objectives of the JLab 12 GeV upgrade and the Electron Ion Collider. Main challenges in extracting 3D partonic distributions from precision measurements of hard scattering processes include clear understanding of leading twist QCD fundamentals, higher twist effects, and also correlations of hadron production in target and current fragmentation regions. In this contribution we discuss some ongoing studies and future measurements of spin-orbit correlations at Jefferson Lab.

Book excerpt: Since the earliest measurements in the '70, hadronic physics deals with a number of surprising phenomena that cannot be explained in the framework of perturbative QCD. Examples are the small fraction of the proton spin carried by the valence quark spins, the persistence at high energies of single spin asymmetries and azimuthal asymmetries in unpolarized processes. It is now believed that the answer to these questions may come from the transverse motion of partons inside the nucleon, which is encoded in the Transverse Momentum Dependent (TMD) Parton Distribution Functions. Among the large variety of processes that can be described in terms of TMDs, a major role is played by Semi-Inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering (SIDIS) reactions, in which, together with the scattered electron, one or more hadrons are detected in the final state. Single and Double Spin Asymmetries are the experimental observables sensitive to TMDs. The identification of the final hadrons allows the tagging of the quark involved in the reaction at the parton level, and then the flavor separation of the relevant TMDs. SIDIS reactions are studied at Jefferson Laboratories since many years and are one of the main items in the physics program after the upgrade of the CEBAF accelerator. The large amount of new data that will be available in few years calls for the implementation of new tools, such as multidimensional analyses and refined techniques of TMDs extraction from the experimental asymmetries. In this talk, the more recent results obtained at 6 GeV will be shown and the future measurements will be discussed.

Book excerpt: These proceedings will be of interest to researchers in nuclear and high-energy physics and graduate students. This workshop focused on the latest developments in the study of the quark structure of the nucleon at large Bjorken x, usually called the valence region. Its main purpose was to bring together experts for an in-depth and critical review of recent advancements in this field of research. This was particularly important in view of the upcoming energy upgrade of Jefferson Lab whose research program will continue to further our understanding of the inner structure of the nucleon.

Book excerpt: I will first review the latest development in the nucleon spin structure study with lepton- nucleon deep inelastic scattering (DIS) from high energy laboratories. I will then concentrate on the progress and plan of study of the nucleon spin structure in the low energy region. With the newly built high luminosity 6 GeV electron beam accelerator and the progress in the highly polarized electron source and highly polarized targets, new experiments are being carried out at Jefferson Lab (CEBAF) to study the nucleon spin structure in the resonance region at low Q2, with focus on the generalized GDH sum rule. Some preliminary results are presented. A generalized GDH sum rule study could provide a first comparison of experimental data with calculations from a fundamental theory over the entire Q2 regime. Taking advantage of the high luminosity of Jefferson Lab, selected spin structure experiments in the DIS region are also planned, concentrating in the valence quark region and the stud y of the quark-gluon correlations through higher twist effects. The parton-hadron duality provides the link between the DIS and the resonance region. Experimental study of duality in spin structure is planned. Outlook of spin structure study with a future 12 GeV energy upgraded Jefferson Lab is discussed.

Book excerpt: Parton distribution functions, describing longitudinal momentum, helicity and transversity distributions of quarks and gluons, have been recently generalized to account also for transverse degrees of freedom. Two new sets of more general distributions, Transverse Momentum Distributions and Generalized Parton Distributions, were introduced to describe transverse momentum and space distributions of partons. Great progress has been made since then in measurements of different Single Spin Asymmetries (SSAs) in semi-inclusive and hard exclusive processes providing access to TMDs and GPDs, respectively. Facilities world-wide involved in studies of the 3D structure of nucleon include HERMES, COMPASS, BELLE, BaBar, Halls A, B, and C at JLab, and PHENIX and STAR at RHIC (BNL). TMD studies in the Drell-Yan process are also becoming an important part of the program of hadron scattering experiments. Studies of TMDs are also among the main driving forces of the JLab 12-GeV upgrade project, several of the forward upgrade proposals of STAR and PHENIX at RHIC, and future facilities, such as the Electron Ion Collider (EIC), FAIR in Germany, and NICA in Russia. In this contribution we present an overview of the latest developments in studies of parton distributions and discuss newly released results, ongoing activities, as well as some future measurements.

Book excerpt: The Jefferson Lab CEBAF accelerator is undergoing an upgrade that will increase the beam energy up to 12 GeV. The three experimental Halls operating in the 6-GeV era are upgrading their detectors to adapt their performances to the new available kinematics, and a new Hall (D) is being built. The investigation of the three-dimensional nucleon structure both in the coordinate and in the momentum space represents an essential part of the 12-GeV physics program, and several proposals aiming at the extraction of related observables have been already approved in Hall A, B and C. In this proceedings, the focus of the JLab 3D program will be described, and a selection of proposals will be discussed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Strangeness and Spin in Fundamental Physics is dedicated to the discussion of the role played by two subtle and somehow puzzling quantum numbers, the strangeness and the spin, in fundamental physics. They both relate to basic properties of the fundamental quantum field theories describing strong and electro-weak interactions and to their phenomenological applications. In some instances, like the partonic spin structure of the proton, they are deeply correlated. The many puzzling results recently obtained by measuring several spin asymmetries have stimulated gigantic progresses in the study of the spin structure of protons and neutrons. Intense theoretical activity has discovered new features of non-perturbative QCD, like strong correlations between the spin and the intrinsic motions of quarks inside the nucleons. The purpose of this publication is that of providing a complete, updated and critical account of the most recent and relevant discoveries in the above fields, both from the experimental and theoretical sides.

Book excerpt: The spin structure of the nucleon has been investigated for now more than three decades using lepton and photon beams. Measurements of the spin-dependent structure functions g1 and g2 have been performed at large Q2 (Deep Inelastic Scattering or DIS region) at SLAC, CERN, and DESY [1], providing information for the understanding of nucleon structure in terms of elementary constituents of QCD, quarks and gluons. On the contrary much less was known in the low momentum transfer region (Q2

Book excerpt: Inclusive Deep-Inelastic Scattering (DIS) experiments have provided us with the most extensive information on the unpolarized and longitudinal polarized parton (quark and gluon) distributions in the nucleon. It has becoming clear that transverse spin and transverse momentum dependent distributions (TMDs) study are crucial for a more complete understanding of the nucleon structure and the dynamics of the strong interaction. The transverse spin structure and the TMDs are the subject of increasingly intense theoretical and experimental study recently. With a high luminosity electron beam facility, JLab has played a major role in the worldwide effort to study both the longitudinal and transverse spin structure. Highlights of recent results will be presented. With 12-GeV energy upgrade, JLab will provide the most precise measurements in the valence quark region to close a chapter in longitudinal spin study. JLab will also perform a multi-dimensional mapping of the transverse spin structure and TMDs in the valence quark region through Semi-Inclusive DIS (SIDIS) experiments, providing a 3-d partonic picture of the nucleon in momentum space and extracting the u and d quark tensor charges of the nucleon. The precision mapping of TMDs will also allow a detailed study of the quark orbital motion and its dynamics.

Book excerpt: Recent progress in the study of the nucleon structure at Jefferson Lab is presented. Precision measurements of spin asymmetry in the valence quark (large x) region are shown and the polarized quark distributions were extracted. The results were in disagreement with predictions from the leading-order pQCD calculations assuming hadron helicity conservation and revealed the importance of the quark orbital angular momentum. Results on sum rules and moments of the nucleon spin structure functions in the low to intermediate Q2 range are also presented. They provide a bridge between the quark-gluon picture of the nucleon and the coherent hadronic picture. In particular, at low Q2 the results were compared with Chiral Perturbation Theory calculations. Other experiments are also briefly discussed.

Book excerpt: The charge and magnetization distributions of the proton and neutron are encoded in their elastic electromagnetic form factors, which can be measured in elastic electron--nucleon scattering. By measuring the form factors, we probe the spatial distribution of the proton charge and magnetization, providing the most direct connection to the spatial distribution of quarks inside the proton. For decades, the form factors were probed through measurements of unpolarized elastic electron scattering, but by the 1980s, progress slowed dramatically due to the intrinsic limitations of the unpolarized measurements. Early measurements at several laboratories demonstrated the feasibility and power of measurements using polarization degrees of freedom to probe the spatial structure of the nucleon. A program of polarization measurements at Jefferson Lab led to a renaissance in the field of study, and significant new insight into the structure of matter.
