Despite this, however, "The majority of children never succeed in understanding the real meanings of mathematical concepts" (Dienes,1960,p.1). This may be, in part, because there are a wide variety of manipulatives available, and the choice of what manipulatives to use and how to use them is primarily left up to the teacher. Therefore, manipulative use needs to be examined and discussed so that teachers can use manipulatives in the most meaningful and effective way possible to enhance student academic performance. The researcher examined the "Do The Math" program, a program that relies heavily on the use of manipulatives to teach concepts, to determine its effectiveness. The students in this study were twelve first graders that were identified in need of academic support. In addition to their regular classroom instruction, the students were taught mathematics using the "Do The Math" program. Both students who received the intervention and those who did not were tested on their ability to solve addition and subtraction problems with a pretest. All students continued to receive their usual instruction for an hour each school day, either whole group mathematics instruction along with center based activities or whole group instruction along with the "Do the Math" program. All students were given a post test after the unit was over, and the results of the post tests were compared to the pretests.
