Book excerpt: Excerpt from Students' Life and Work in the University of Cambridge: Two Lectures The lectures on the students' life and work in the University of Cambridge which it is my privilege to deliver to you today and on Monday next are a special dish in that large and liberal bill of fare that has been provided for you this year. They have been added to the general programme which fixes your minds on the great men, great events and noble achievements of the Victorian age as a kind of light and -very modern hors d'oeuvre preceding the more substantial dishes. We thought that those of our English friends who have, come for the first time to this ancient seat of learning keen to acquire an insight into a place that we hope Will soon become dear and familiar to them would like to have some account of the life that is led and the work that is done under ordinary conditions amid these historic surroundings. We also hoped that the many foreigners who have come to the banks of the tam notmerely as easily satisfied Sightseers ready to do the place in one afternoon between luncheon and dinner, but as keen students and observers, those earnest men and women from foreign lands whom we are happy to welcome here once more at our Summer meeting, might find a Short account of the life and work of their nearest spiritual relatives, the ordinary Cambridge students, of some interest and real service. Book excerpt: Historical accounts of successful laboratories often consist primarily of reminiscences by their directors and the eminent people who studied or worked in these laboratories. Such recollections customarily are delivered at the celebration of a milestone in the history of the laboratory, such as the institution's fiftieth or one hundredth anniversary. Three such accounts of the Cavendish Laboratory at the University of Cambridge have been recorded. The first of these, A History of the Cavendish Laboratory, 1871-1910, was published in 1910 in honor of the twenty fifth anniversary of Joseph John Thomson's professorship there. The second, The Cavendish Laboratory, 1874-1974, was published in 1974 to commemorate the one hundredth anniversary of the Cavendish. The third, A Hundred Years and More of Cambridge Physics, is a short pamphlet, also published at the centennial of the 1 Cavendish. These accounts are filled with the names of great physicists (such as James Clerk Maxwell, Lord Rayleigh, J. J. Thomson, Ernest Rutherford, and William Lawrence Bragg), their glorious achievements (for example, the discoveries of the electron, the neutron, and DNA) and interesting anecdotes about how these achievements were reached. But surely a narrative that does justice to the history of a laboratory must recount more than past events. Such a narrative should describe a living entity and provide not only details of the laboratory's personnel, organization, tools, and tool kits, but should also explain how these components interacted within 2 their wider historical, cultural, and social contexts.

Book excerpt: A new and exciting introduction to linguistics, this textbook presents language in all its amazing complexity, while guiding students gently through the basics. Students emerge with an appreciation of the diversity of the world's languages, as well as a deeper understanding of the structure of human language, the ways it is used, and its broader social and cultural context. Chapters introducing the nuts and bolts of language study (phonology, syntax, meaning) are combined with those on the 'functions' of language (discourse, prosody, pragmatics, and language contact), helping students gain a better grasp of how language works in the real world. A rich set of language 'profiles' help students explore the world's linguistic diversity, identify similarities and differences between languages, and encourages them to apply concepts from earlier chapter material. A range of carefully designed pedagogical features encourage student engagement, adopting a step-by-step approach and using study questions and case studies.
