Book excerpt: The deterioration of steel in aging reinforced concrete bridges is a continual problem which could benefit from improved rehabilitation techniques that take advantage of enhanced and more durable materials such as fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composites. Appropriately designed hybrid material systems benefit from the performance and durability advantages of FRP materials yet remain more cost effective than comparable all-composite systems. Development of rapid rehabilitation systems for the decks of concrete box girder bridges, which are increasingly common throughout the United States, is presented. One goal of this research is to assess and validate the use of FRP composite panels for use as both stay-in-place formwork and as the bottom longitudinal and transverse reinforcement in the deck of concrete box girder bridges. Performance assessments for full-scale two-cell box girder bridge specimens through monotonic and extensive cyclic loading provided validation for the FRP panel system bridge deck as a viable rehabilitation solution for box girder bridge decks. The FRP panel system performed comparably to a conventionally reinforced concrete bridge deck in terms of serviceability, deflection profiles, and system level structural interaction and performed superior to the RC bridge deck in terms of residual deflections, and structural response under cyclic loading. Assessment of a damaged FRP panel bridge deck system, which was repaired using a resin injection technique, showed superior performance for the repaired system in terms of integrity of the FRP panel interface and cyclic response. Rapid rehabilitation techniques for strengthening reinforced concrete box girder bridge deck overhangs using near-surface-mounted (NSM) carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) were also evaluated. Analytical predictions of load carrying capacity and deflections provided correlation with experimental results, and the developed analysis methods provide an effective design tool for future research. Results from the laboratory testing of a bridge deck overhang strengthened with FRP showed significant increases in load carrying capacity as well as deformation capacity as compared to the as-built specimen without FRP. This research provides enhanced understanding of hybrid structures and indicates significant potential for rehabilitation applications to concrete box girder bridges.

Book excerpt: Rising awareness of and increased attention to sexual harassment has resulted in momentum to implement sexual harassment prevention efforts in higher education institutions. Work on preventing sexual harassment is an area that has recently garnered a lot of attention, especially around education and programs that go beyond the standard anti-sexual harassment trainings often used to comply with legal requirements. On April 20-21, 2021, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine hosted the workshop Developing Evaluation Metrics for Sexual Harassment Prevention Efforts. The workshop explored approaches and strategies for evaluating and measuring the effectiveness of sexual harassment interventions being implemented at higher education institutions and research and training sites, in order to assist institutions in transforming promising ideas into evidence-based best practices. Workshop participants also addressed methods, metrics, and measures that could be used to evaluate sexual harassment prevention efforts that lead to change in the organizational climate and culture and/or a change in behavior among community members. This publication summarizes the presentations and discussion of the workshop.

Book excerpt: During the interstate expansion of the 1950s, many conventionally reinforced concrete deck girder bridges were built throughout the country. These now vintage bridges commonly exhibit diagonal cracking and rate inadequately for shear, thus they are candidates for shear strengthening to extend their useful life. Near-surface mounted (NSM) retrofitting is a promising new strengthening technique, but limited test data are available for carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) in shear strengthening making the long-term durability of NSM-CFRP unknown. This paper provides experimental results from realistic full-scale specimens strengthened with NSM-CFRP. Specimens were tested for shear strength and subjected to environmental exposures to assess long-term durability. Small cylinder specimens were tested to investigate relative performance of different adhesives on bond strength under different environmental exposures. Test results provide a better understanding of the NSM-CFRP shear behavior and strength. Recommendations for shear strength design with NSM-CFRP are made.

Due to their advantageous material properties such as high specific strength, a large tolerance for frost and de-icing salts and, furthermore, short installation times with minimum traffic interference, fibre reinforced polymers have matured to become valuable alternative building materials for bridge structures. Today, fibre reinforced polymers are manufactured industrially to semi-finished products and complete structural components, which can be easily and quickly installed or erected on site.

Book excerpt: The in situ rehabilitation or upgrading of reinforced concrete members using bonded steel plates is an effective, convenient and economic method of improving structural performance. However, disadvantages inherent in the use of steel have stimulated research into the possibility of using fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) materials in its place, providing a non-corrosive, more versatile strengthening system. This book presents a detailed study of the flexural strengthening of reinforced and prestressed concrete members using fibre reinforces polymer composite plates. It is based to a large extent on material developed or provided by the consortium which studied the technology of plate bonding to upgrade structural units using carbon fibre / polymer composite materials. The research and trial tests were undertaken as part of the ROBUST project, one of several ventures in the UK Government's DTI-LINK Structural Composites Programme. The book has been designed for practising structural and civil engineers seeking to understand the principles and design technology of plate bonding, and for final year undergraduate and postgraduate engineers studying the principles of highway and bridge engineering and structural engineering. Detailed study of the flexural strengthening of reinforced and prestressed concrete members using fibre reinforced polymer composites Contains in-depth case histories

Book excerpt: Long-term durability of surface-bonded carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) for shear strengthening of reinforced concrete (RC) bridge members remains uncertain due to the limited field experience with these materials. This paper provides experimental results from the testing of full-scale RC bridge girder specimens after exposure to prolonged environmental exposure and combined action of freeze-thaw + repeated service loads. CFRP shear contributions seen in experimental results were estimated using a refined base capacity prediction (Response-2000) and compared to predicted CFRP shear contributions (ACI-440). The IT specimens did not exhibit strength reductions due to moisture exposure, instead the presence of continuous water exposure for the relatively young concrete caused higher concrete tensile properties resulting in increased bond strength. Previous research showed CFRP strengthened T specimens with freeze-thaw exposure exhibited lower shear capacity than similar unexposed CFRP strengthened T specimen. But the current research demonstrated that if the beam is well protected against moisture infiltration at the strip termination, the beam will be less susceptible to freeze-thaw bond deterioration. The orientations of specimens during repair and during exposure are important considerations for environmental durability. The CFRP strip terminations should be focused on during installation to insure well and perhaps extra saturation even past the CFRP material to limit moisture infiltration along this edge.

Book excerpt: "This thesis presents the results of a pilot study to apply externally bonded Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) sheets to strengthen a simple span reinforced concrete solid slab bridge built in 1922. Strengthening with CFRP sheets was accomplished in three days without traffic interruption, and preparation consisted of only light sandblasting. Bridge G-270 is the only load-posted structure on a heavy truck route that serves a lead mining operation and the objective was to strengthen the bridge to allow removal of the load posting. The University of Missouri-Rolla conducted the pilot study for the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) under MoDOT Contract No. RI98-012. The laboratory testing included the static flexural test of two full-scale beams, designed as a unit strip from the existing bridge deck, and the fatigue bond test of coupon- type specimens. Two reinforced concrete beams, a control beam and a beam strengthened with externally bonded CFRP were tested under four point bending. Coupon-type specimens consisting of unreinforced concrete beams with a reversed T- shaped cross-section and with a CFRP sheet applied to the bottom were tested. The purpose was to investigate the behavior of bond between CFRP sheets and concrete under fatigue loading. The field load testing of the bridge, before and after strengthening, was performed by the University of Missouri-Columbia to verify the performance of the bridge after the application of externally bonded CFRP. Long-term field measurements also were conducted to monitor the durability and the strain condition of the strengthened system. Pennsylvania State University conducted the monitoring of durability by studying the electrochemical effects of the CFRP material on the degradation of the reinforcing steel. Fiber-optic strain sensors were applied to the FRP reinforcement and the concrete to allow for long-term monitoring of the integrity of the FRP reinforcement. This pilot study was a success. Laboratory and field tests indicate that CFRP sheets, externally applied to a bridge superstructure, strengthened the slab and will allow the removal of the load posting. Monitoring of the bridge will continue"--Abstract, leaf iii
