Book excerpt: Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2007 im Fachbereich Englisch - Pädagogik, Didaktik, Sprachwissenschaft, Note: 13, Johann Wolfgang Goethe-Universität Frankfurt am Main (Institut für England- und Amerikastudien), Veranstaltung: The Secret Formula, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Nowadays it is necessary to be able to speak english, because this language is getting more and more important and it is the basis of international communication. So pupils have to learn as early as possible to have a strong command of this language and to use it effectively. Communicative language teaching (CLT) emphasizes communicative skills and wants communicative practise at the centre of classroom learning. According to Savignon, communicative competence is the central theoretical concept of CLT (2004). She defines this competence with the terms of expressions, interpretation and negociation of meaning. Hedge says that it is important for CLT to encourage pupils to communicate their needs, ideas and opinions and also that they are able to operate effectively in the real world (2000:44-45). She writes that in the communicative language classroom pupils have to learn to use that language in certain settings and authentic situations. According to both authors, CLT helps to develop certain communicative skills and to come to terms with the language without any grave problems of expressing thoughts, wishes, opinions, etc. The language learner has to indentify him with that language so that he can apply his knowledge without any fear and uncertainity. And it is important that the teacher applies grammar based exercises as an integral part of real live tasks. Otherwise the learners could get bored, detered or even overtaxed with grammatical units. Hedge claims too, that a teacher`s intervention to correct should be as minimal as possible (2000:58). We can integrate grammatical units in activities where learners are supposed to talk about their next holiday plans and therefore they need to use several f

Book excerpt: "The purpose of this application thesis is to determine if there is a significant difference in second language acquisition and retention when the teacher uses the Total Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling (TPRS) method as opposed to the Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) approach when teaching a foreign language. In the CLT approach, a variety of task-based communication activities, games, role plays and simulations, usually carried out in small groups, give students an opportunity to use and practice the language. Often, this approach uses real-life situations that require communication. The teacher sets up a situation that students can encounter in real life and students communicate about the situation. TPRS uses storytelling as a means to help students hear, process, and use more authentic language. High-frequency vocabulary and structures are used, along with some involvement and input from the students to create funny and interesting stories. Language is taught holistically without teaching grammar rules, and language is learned by understanding messages in the target language through comprehensible input. The empirical research indicates that a variety of language teaching methods in the classroom is the most effective method of teaching a foreign language. Overuse of any method may contribute to student frustration, affecting achievement. Therefore, this thesis includes an application of both TPRS and CLT instruction."--leaf 4.

Book excerpt: Teaching and Learning Communication, Language and Literacy is a comprehensive guide to the teaching and learning of communication, language and literacy in the foundation stage (3-5 years). It draws on research findings and good practice to provide practical guidance about working with young children in nursery and reception classes. The book examines how young children develop as learners and users of language and literacy and the contribution that home and school make to their learning. It locates learning in a play based curriculum and provides a rationale for making play both a context and a resource for learning. It also takes account of recent policy initiatives such as the Curriculum Guidance for the Foundation Stage, the organization for literacy in reception classes and the foundation stage assessment profile. Throughout the book a distinction is made between the organization and activities that are appropriate to nursery and reception children. The book contains practical suggestions about activities and resources including ways of working with environmental print and found texts, ICT, TV and video as well as books. The role of adults in supporting and extending learning is considered in detail.

TPRS provides a framework for teaching classes completely in the target language—even those at the beginner level. Through the steps of establishing meaning, creating a story that is acted out live in class, and reading, students understand and use the target language to communicate right away. Research shows that over time TPRS creates fluent speakers who excel both on traditional tests and—more importantly—in real-life situations. This is a valuable resource on TPRS for world language teachers, language teacher educators, and second language researchers.

Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2011 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Pedagogy, Literature Studies, grade: 10,00, , course: Enseñanza de inglés como lengua extranjera. English as a Second Language., language: English, abstract: Speaking in a second or foreign language has often been viewed as the most demanding of the four skills. When attempting to speak, learners must master their thoughts and encode them in the vocabulary and syntactic structures and functions of the target language for a communicative purpose. This desire for speaking stems from the desire for communicating with the members of another community. Because, what is language but communication? Communication is what has allowed man to evolve and develop. It is at the heart of any relationship and forms the basis of human civilization. Oral communication and conversation is the rock on which personal relationships are built. It is such a common part of our everyday lives that we take it for granted. From a casual conversation with a stranger at a bus stop to an intimate conversation with some friends, it would be impossible for us to go about our daily lives without being able to communicate with others. It is not only on a personal level that oral communication is important. When we watch TV, listen to the radio, listen to a lecture at university, we are participating in an oral communication act and certainly, when we listen to a personal, short story or an anecdote. In this study, we will look at the different factors involved in accomplishing a specific task like storytelling by setting the differences between an oral and a written story. We will also look at the intentionality of the communicative situation, at the strategies used to overcome any deficiency in language competence, the functions involved and, mainly, at the process whereby students will be able to be successful in this specific communicative situation. This paper is divided into two main parts: the first part is a theoretical background which is necessary to build the second part, that is, the practical part, where the different activities are presented to improve progressively the students' four skills in order to develop the final task, which consists of students creating their own personal story to produce it orally in class with their classmates as their audience.

Book excerpt: This book draws on theories of second language acquisition (SLA) to illustrate how interactive white board technology can be exploited to support language acquisition. It examines interaction, collaboration and negotiation of meaning and focus on form in the communicative language classroom in primary, secondary and vocational schools. In recent years new technologies have been incorporated into second and foreign language education as tools for implementing teaching methodologies. IWBs have established their role in the field of computer-assisted language learning (CALL) and are an effective and inspiring tool which motivates both teachers and learners. Although the number of IWBs in classrooms has rapidly increased over the past decade in many parts of the world, teacher training materials and pedagogical support for the design, evaluation and implementation of IWB-based materials in the foreign language classroom has not kept pace. Research also shows that language teachers do not always use IWBs in pedagogically sound ways. There is a real need for the development of training models and examples of good practice which can support teachers in developing the necessary competencies for exploiting the IWB in ways consistent with current theories of language teaching pedagogy. This book provides that best practice and gives a full account of in-depth research in an accessible manner.

Book excerpt: Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2014 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Pedagogy, Literature Studies, grade: 1,0, University of Leipzig, language: English, abstract: The following paper was developed in the context of internationalization in education and how international education can be promoted. According to a popular online encyclopedia, internationalization in a broader sense can be regarded as international activities, mostly regarded in an economic sense as the process of increasing involvement of enterprises in international markets (see: Wikipedia/internationalization) However, international activities in the economy not only affect economies itself but also societies worldwide. Therefore, people involved need to adapt their perspective from a national towards a more international one. Thus, activities towards internationalization should first of all be promoted in education for students to acquire the necessary intercultural knowledge to be equipped with the necessary competencies to become a global citizen.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this comparative study was to examine the effects of two foreign language teaching approaches--communicative language teaching and teaching proficiency through reading and storytelling--on motivation and proficiency for Spanish III students in high school. These two teaching approaches have gained prominence over the last couple of decades and no consensus exists between second language (L2) researchers and practitioners on which approach might be best to increase students' motivation to learn and to become proficient. One hundred and seventeen Spanish III students in high school studying with the TPRS or the CLT teaching approach, completed the LLOS-IEA Motivation Scale in order to collect L2 motivational data and took the Standards-Based Measurement of Proficiency test (STAMP 4S) to collect data on proficiency. The researcher used descriptive and parametric inferential statistics to examine mean scores differences on the variables between both approaches. Looking at the results of the analyses run for this study, the researcher observed that the TPRS teaching approach had statistically significant higher levels of L2 motivation for IM Accomplishment, IM Knowledge, and IM Stimulation ( p = .001), whereas the CLT approach had higher levels of proficiency in Reading (p = .001); Writing (p = .001); and Listening (p = .29).
