Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories of the German Artists There are many circumstances which apprise us of the low estimation in which art was held during the evanescence of the Middle Ages, but none enforces the point upon us with greater effectiveness than this. Truly, indeed, the man whom later ages have looked up to almost as to a special kind Of being, and about whose work more hubbub has been raised than about any other profession almost, was then held for a mere craftsman, an artisan like every one else. And though he may have done as charming work as he whom we now style Master Wilhelm, or as beautiful and important work as he whom we now style the Master of the Life of the Virgin, or as strangely uncommon and startling produc tions as the Master of the St. Thomas Altar piece, yet he was no more deemed worthy of being cherished in the memory of ages to come as an individual than the good fellow who tailored well-fitting clothes, or he who joined tables and chairs well, or he who perhaps excelled as a pastry-cook. Book excerpt: Excerpt from German Masters of Art The increase of travel in Germany and the frequent pilgrimages that are being made to points of interest to the musician, scholar and pedagogue are contributing to the greater appreciation of the mediaeval flavour and quaint picturesqueness of her smaller towns with their narrow streets and high-gabled timber houses, and to a fuller acquaintance with the rich treasures of her art. Whether the traveller explores the towns and villages nestling among the mountains of Tyrol, seeks out those tucked away in the Black Forest, the Vosges or the Harz Mountains, visits the walled strong holds oi the Swabian plains, wanders along the banks of the Rhine or follows the narrow, picturesque Danube valley to the river's source, he will find everywhere imposing castles that are veritable treasure-houses of art; ancient monasteries with graceful, frescoed Cloisters or collections of rare pictures; beautiful or unique churches with fine, old, wooden, carved and painted altar-pieces; princely, ducal or municipal galleries rich in interesting works of art. On the other hand, with the growing complexity of the inter-relationship of national interests and ideas, it is becoming more difficult every day to gauge the road we ourselves are travelling without possessing some knowledge of what is taking place - germinating, ripening - outside our own doors. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Men Around the Kaiser: The Makers of Modern Germany William II German Emperor and King of Prussia, is about to commemorate his Silver Jubilee. Twenty-five years of eventful sovereignty have brought his Empire to the pinnacle of national greatness. Under his dynamic leadership the Father land has advanced to front rank in the peaceful arts of commerce and trade, made herself the world's first military power, and become Britain's formid able rival for the mastery of the sea. No reign, medieval or modern, records a more inspiring story of a people's vault to affluence and might. Wondrous and eloquent are the statistical revelations of Germany's bounding growth in population, of Imperial Berlin's rise to metropolitan splendor, of the Empire's colossal foreign trade, of the amazing expansion of national wealth, of the development of the merchant marine, of the transformation of the Navy from a fleet of frigates into an Armada of Dreadnoughts, of triumphs countless in the realms of science, art and industry, which combine to make the German name synonymous with pro gress and power. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The German and Flemish Masters: In the National Gallery The important and interesting collections of German and Flemish pictures in the National Gallery have scarcely received the special study which has been accorded so often to the rival schools of Italy. They have never, perhaps, been treated as a whole, nor in that intimate relation to one another which their early history demands. The literature connected with German and Flemish art is indeed extensive and increasing. Since the remarkable Exhibition held at Bruges in 1902 the early Flemish painters in particular have been subjected to the most careful and critical examination, and much that was before cloudy and vague has been defined, while many new problems.
