Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories of Minnesota The history of the struggle of the pioneer and yeoman of early Minnesota, though it is an inland state, carved out of the Louisiana and Northwest Territories, reads like the story of many a state won along the coast. The battles of the settlers with soil and savage, the energy and thrift later displayed by her citizens, or their patriotism when war called to action - these things are not new, nor indeed remarkable, when their frequency is counted. But a knowledge of the struggles and their incident deeds of courage, necessary to planting a new world, and especially a knowledge of what was necessary to a conquest of America, is of value to youth. And surely it is more fitting that the western boys and girls should finish their school-days with a knowledge of the historical facts in the rise of their own states to eminence, rather than that they be acquainted only with the story of the Pilgrims of Massachusetts or the Cavaliers of Virginia. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Minnesota: A History for Children IN giving to the public this little book on the History of Minnesota, the author makes no claim that much is presented in the way of new material, but hopes that the fact that it is written for chil dren will make it possible, as it has not been before, for the children of Minnesota to learn the history of her past and hence to love it. While many things are necessarily omitted, not only for lack of space, but also because they are not of particular interest to children, the aim throughout the work is accuracy. The sources which have been used are to be found largely in the diaries and papers of the Minnesota Historical Society, reliance put largely upon the statements of those who helped to make the history here related. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Minnesota, Vol. 1 The Story of Minnesota is called, on its shield, "The Star of the North," though the words, as written, appear in French, thus: "L 'Etoile du Nord." Since every State is represented by a separate star in our nation's flag, it is natural to speak of States, sometimes, as "stars;" and of all the States, Minnesota projects farthest to the north. In fact, it includes part of a peninsula away up in the Ike of the Woods, which singular fact calls for an explanation. When our nation made peace with Great Britain at the close of the Revolutionary War, it was agreed that the Mississippi should be our western boundary all the way up to our northern boundary. But it was found, later, that the Mississippi did not extend so far north. Hence the western boundary was pieced out by an imaginary line running northward from the source of the river into the lake mentioned, cutting off for us an odd piece of land which we cannot reach except by boat, unless we pass through some of the Canadian land. It was proper that the motto on Minnesota's shield should be written in French, for that was practically the only European language used in this region in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, and the words recall to mind the arduous labors and great services of brave French explorers, missionaries. and traders in the days of the long ago. The most important of them are: the papers of Governor Alexander Ramsey, in the possession of his daughter, Mrs. Marion R. F urness; the letter books and papers of General H. H. Sibley, pre served in the library of the Minnesota Historical Society; some hundreds of letters saved by Colonel John H. Stevens, and deposited by him in the same library; the papers of Ignatius Donnelly, in the hands of his family; the great collection of Green Bay and Prairie du Chien papers belonging to the Wisconsin Historical Society; the remarkable group of early French documents owned by the Chicago Historical Society; and finally, the price less collection of Minnesota newspapers preserved by the Minnesota Historical Society. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memories of the Early Life and Development of Minnesota When I told him that I would like a position to teach mathe maties, it struck him more than favorably, as he said that that was his line of work, and that it did not give him any time to run the university and he wanted some one to handle the classes. We went around with his horse and buggy among the members Of the Board, and I found that the general scare which everywhere existed made them hesitate about making any arrangements for the future running of the school, not knowing whether or not it would ever open again. The presi dent, whose name I have forgotten, said that when school would open again, which he hoped would be in the fall, he felt quite certain that I would be offered a position as assistant teacher in mathematics. A majority of the board were really in favor of engaging me, and the other members were not op posed, excepting only their apprehension as to future pros peets of the university in such calamitous times. This came to pass in the fall, when I was on the government surveys in the northern part of Minnesota and could not accept. If this open ing had occurred or had been decided upon before I came to this state, it would without doubt have changed the course of my whole life. Some dav the history of this period of the University will be written by someone who will have the advantage of perspective, but, we trust that when that time comes, the one who writes will find in this volume the greater part of the information which he will need to get the proper values for his pen picture of the period covered by this volume. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Minnesota, Vol. 4 of 4 The introduction to the first volume of this work an nounced that a general bibliography would be included in the final volume. On further consideration, however, in View of the inclusion of complete bibliographical information with the first reference in each volume to each work cited, it seemed that the principal object of such a bibliography would be achieved by listing the works in the consolidated index, printed in this volume, with references to the first citations. Undoubtedly a systematic bibliography of Minnesota his tory would be very useful, but there is no special reason why it should be included in this work. All manuscripts and newspapers cited, unless otherwise indicated, will be found in the collections of the Minnesota Historical Society. These include, in the Folwell Papers turned over to the society by the author and his family, correspondence and records of interviews with many persons who possessed first-hand in formation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Government of Minnesota In preparing this account of the way Minnesota is governed, the author has sought to make the framework and the operations of the government stand out as realities in a living world, but he well knows that a text-book can only imperfectly succeed in such a task. The responsibility of leading youth to an understanding and appreciation of the political organization by which they are surrounded, and above all, the giving of the proper attitude toward public matters, must depend largely upon the kind of atmosphere furnished by the home and by the school. The text-book in civil government is only an aid to the study of the subject. The one here presented presupposes some observation of governmental arrangements, such at least as are made in most schools of the grammar grade, in "general lessons," or in connection with civic leagues or young citizens' clubs, such as are described in the "Course of Study" recently published by the Department of Public Instruction. The provisions of the Constitution and the statutes have been made the starting-point in discussing the activities of the government. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Collections of the Minnesota Historical Society, 1901, Vol. 9 It is made possible to draw these very heavy loads by icing the ruts of the logging roads. At the beginning of the logging season, and occasionally afterward, whenever snowstorms or continued wearing make it needful, water tanks on runners are drawn along the roads, supplying a small stream at each side. The resulting narrow courses of ice bear up the sleds under the great weight. The manner of felling the trees also shows an important change from the old methods. Instead of chopping them down with axes, as was formerly done, they are sawed off at the stump. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Minnesota The home seeker is likely to think of the northern part of the State as a desolate waste, or, a region of dense forests, where he must pioneer as did his father and grandfather when they opened up their farms. The home seeker's wife naturally shrinks when she thinks of the hardships undergone by the early settlers. But no such pioneering is necessary. Good land is available on roads near good towns with good schools, in good communities, and with good neighbors whose interests are mutual. Minnesota has all these things to offer the new home seeker, and it is the purpose of this booklet to present conditions as they exist to-day so that every home seeker will fully understand the situation and be able to choose for himself. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Collections of the Minnesota Historical Society, 1915, Vol. 15 In the autumn of 1860 large flocks of blackbirds, such as I think were never since seen in this country, attacked the corn crops and destroyed much corn. This was general over all southwestern Minnesota. It is no exaggeration whatever, when I say that dense flocks would consume an entire day and even longer in flying over a given point. The state offered forty cents per hundred for their heads, many were poisoned, but apparently no benefit was accomplished. The same year sandhill cranes were so numerous, voracious, and bold, that they could scarcely be driven from the fields. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences of the Early Days of Minnesota The presence of faribault being required at his trading post on the Cannon river, he departed in company with two young Indians, leaving me alone with the two hired men. I made it a practice to hunt with the Indians every day, except on Sunday, when I remained in my lodge. The Dakota mode of hunting deer is to form an extended line with intervals of eighty or a hundred yards between the hunters, and then ad vance at a rapid pace, completely scouring the country on their way. Any one falling in the rear has but a poor Chance for success. When an animal is killed, the carcass remains on the spot until the return of the owner, after the conclusion of the day's hunt. The skin is then taken off, and with a portion of the hind quarters, is the property of the man who shot the deer or elk, and the remainder is equitably divided among such as have been less successful, or to the widows and orphan children in the camp. The rule is, that while there is any food on hand, it must be distributed to all alike. There was a great abundance of game in the country where we were encamped, so that from twenty to thirty deer were an average day's hunt besides the elk, bear, and other animals killed with fire arms, and beaver and otter taken with traps by the men who were past the age when they could endure the exhausting exercise of deer hunting. I left the camp at an early hour one day to still hunt in a direction different from that to be taken by the Indians. I was successful, and returned to my lodge bearing upon my shoulders the greater part of a young buck. I soon ascertained that there was quite a commotion in the camp. One of the women came to inform me that all the men except five old fellows, who could not travel, had gone down to the forks of the Red Cedar, more262 minnesota historical collections. Verandrie. The next year an advance was made to the Lake of the Woods, and on its western shore was erected a fort, in compliment to Charles Beauharnois, the Governor of Canada, named Fort St. Charles. In the year 1734, near the entrance of Lake W'innipeg, was established Fort Maurepas, and here for a time exploration ceased. Owing to the exhaustion of supplies. During the month of June, 1736, twenty-one members of the expedition were encamped upon an island in the Lake of the lvoods, and surprised bv a band of hostile Sioux. And all killed. Among the slain were one of Verandrie's sons, also a priest named Ouneau1 who was the Spiritual adviser of the party. We do, however, repair the vast majority of imperfections successfully; any imperfections that remain are intentionally left to preserve the state of such historical works.
