Book excerpt: We report the status of the diagnostics undulator beamline for the Advanced Photon Source (APS) storage ring. The beamline was designed for the characterization of the 7-GeV, low-emittance positron beam at high resolution. The special diagnostics undulator has been manufactured by STI Optronics. The device exhibits very low magnetic field errors at closed gap of 10.5 mm: first field integral less than 15 gauss·cm, and optical phase error less than 1.5°. The front end of the beamline and a monochromator are installed and tested for use on divergence and directional stability measurements with a target resolution of 3 [mu]rad utilizing the first harmonic radiation of 25 keV. Initial results for the divergence measurement show that the storage ring is operating well within its design goals.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The design of a beryllium (Be) window for use under the extremely high heat load of an undulator beam is one of the challenges for third-generation synchrotron radiation beamlines. A novel design of a Be window is presented for the Advanced Photon Source (APS) diagnostics undulator beamline, whose beam has a peak power density of 150 W/mm2 (7 GeV/100 mA stored beam). The window has a double concave profile with a thickness of 0.5 mm at the center and is brazed to a water-cooled oxygen-free, high-conductivity (OFHC) copper manifold. Finite-element thermal analysis of the Be window is also presented.

Download or read book Planned Optical Diagnostics for the APS Low-energy Undulator Test Line written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the Advanced Photon Source (APS), an alternate configuration of the injector linacs (low-energy undulator test line) using an rf gun as the source is projected to provide low, normalized emittance electron beams ([var-epsilon]n[approximately] 5[pi] mm mrad). In order to characterize such beams, the present intercepting Chromox screens with limited spatial resolution and temporal response are being complemented by optical transition radiation (OTR) screens at selected positions in the beamline to provide sub-100[micro]m spatial resolution and sub-ps response times. Both gated cameras and streak cameras will be used to measure the beam properties. Additionally, coherent transition radiation (CTR) and diffraction radiation (DR) based techniques will be evaluated. These beam characterizations will support self-amplified spontaneous emission (SASE) scaling experiments.

Topics for this year's meeting included: Facilities: history, status, and upgrades Sources: insertion devices, laser, excited and other High-tech: beam stabilization, beamline hardware, and control Optics: novel design, fabrication, testing and use Small stuff: making and imaging micro structures Real-time: in-situ measurements and materials characterization Detectors: large, small, fast, and energy-resolving
Download or read book The APS SASE FEL written by and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A self-amplified spontaneous emission (SASE) free-electron laser (FEL) is under construction at the Advanced Photon Source (APS). Three gun systems, an rf-test area, laser room, numerous diagnostics, a transfer line at the end of the linac, and a new building, which will serve as the experimental hall, have been added. The only remaining items to be installed are the undulators into the beamline. Here, the additions to the APS in support of this project as well as commissioning results and future plans will be discussed.

Download or read book Preliminary Tests of the Optical Diagnostics for the APS Low-energy Undulator Test Line Particle Beam written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An alternate configuration of the injector linacs (low-energy undulator test line) at the Advanced Photon Source (APS) combined with a thermionic rf gun is projected to provide low, normalized emittance electron beams ([var-epsilon][sub n][approximately] 5% mm mrad). By using the electron linac and the inline, rephased positron linac, beam energies from 250 to 650 MeV with bunch lengths sigma[sigma][sub t][approximately] 1 ps are possible. In order to characterize such beams, the present intercepting Chromox screens with limited spatial resolution and temporal response are being complemented by optical transition radiation (OTR) screens at selected positions in the beamline to provide sub-100[micro]m spatial resolution and sub-ps response times. Initial OTR images have been obtained from a beam at 650 MeV using the conventional thermionic gun to generate a 30-ns-long macropulse. Micropulse bunch lengths as short as 3 to 4 ps ([sigma]) were also measured using a C5680 streak camera. Additionally, coherent transition radiation (CTR) and diffraction radiation (DR) based techniques will be evaluated. These beam characterizations will support self-amplified spontaneous emission (SASE) scaling experiments.

Book Synopsis Status of the Advanced Photon Source Low-energy Undulator Test Line by :
Download or read book Status of the Advanced Photon Source Low-energy Undulator Test Line written by and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The low-energy undulator test line (LEUTL) is being constructed at the Advanced Photon Source (APS). Its first purpose is to fully characterize innovative, future generation undulators, some of which may prove difficult or impossible to measure by traditional techniques. Second, LEUTL will act as a test line to investigate the generation of coherent radiation at wavelengths down to a few tens of nanometers. The line will use a high-brightness rf electron gun as its source and the APS linac to accelerate these electrons up to>650 MeV. This beam will then be directed into a new enclosure that is nearly 50 m long and will accommodate beamline components, diagnostics, and undulators. This region is wide enough to house two separate beamlines. In addition, there is an external end station appropriate for housing the equipment necessary to directly study the generated light outside of the radiation environment. At present, the new enclosure and building are complete, the new rf electron gun is installed and operational, and a part of the necessary transport line is installed. An undulator cell prototype, suitable for testing the requirements of single-pass free-electron laser operation, is near completion and will be installed during the winter shutdown of 1997. This paper will describe the LEUTL project and its capability for exploring the self-amplified spontaneous emission process.

Book Synopsis Recent Observations on the APS Storage Ring Using Synchrotron Radiation Monitors by :
Download or read book Recent Observations on the APS Storage Ring Using Synchrotron Radiation Monitors written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Advanced Photon Source (APS) 7-GeV storage ring and the synchrotron radiation diagnostics have matured noticeable in the past year. The monitors now include information from two separate bending-magnet sources (one at a dispersive point in the lattice) as well as a 198-period diagnostic undulator. Data logging via EPICS of the observed transverse beam size is coupled with the measured lattice parameters to calculate emittance on-line as well. Information on the beam emittance (7[+-] 1 nm rad) in both the standard lattice and a low[beta][sub y] lattice, the vertical coupling (1 to 4%), and beam position and jitter are logged. In addition, measurements of divergence, (3 to 7[micro]rad), beam bunch length ([approximately] 35 ps), and even effects of the moon's gravity on the source point image position have been performed.
