Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1920 and 1940, Cuba underwent a remarkable transition, moving from oligarchic rule to a nominal constitutional democracy. The events of this period are crucial to a full understanding of the nation's political evolution, yet they are often glossed over in accounts that focus more heavily on the revolution of 1959. With this book, Robert Whitney accords much-needed attention to a critical stage in Cuban history. Closely examining the upheavals of the period, which included a social revolution in 1933 and a military coup led by Fulgencio Batista one year later, Whitney argues that the eventual rise of a more democratic form of government came about primarily because of the mass mobilization by the popular classes against oligarchic capitalism, which was based on historically elite status rather than on a modern sense of nation. Although from the 1920s to the 1940s politicians and political activists were bitterly divided over what "popular" and "modern" state power meant, this new generation of politicians shared the idea that a modern state should produce a new and democratic Cuba.
Book Synopsis Revolutions: a Very Short Introduction by : Jack A. Goldstone
Download or read book Revolutions: a Very Short Introduction written by Jack A. Goldstone and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In the 20th and 21st century revolutions have become more urban, often less violent, but also more frequent and more transformative of the international order. Whether it is the revolutions against Communism in Eastern Europe and the USSR; the "color revolutions" across Asia, Europe and North Africa; or the religious revolutions in Iran, Afghanistan, and Syria; today's revolutions are quite different from those of the past. Modern theories of revolution have therefore replaced the older class-based theories with more varied, dynamic, and contingent models of social and political change. This new edition updates the history of revolutions, from Classical Greece and Rome to the Revolution of Dignity in the Ukraine, with attention to the changing types and outcomes of revolutionary struggles. It also presents the latest advances in the theory of revolutions, including the issues of revolutionary waves, revolutionary leadership, international influences, and the likelihood of revolutions to come. This volume provides a brief but comprehensive introduction to the nature of revolutions and their role in global history"--

Book Synopsis A Short History of Revolutionary Cuba by : Antoni Kapcia
Download or read book A Short History of Revolutionary Cuba written by Antoni Kapcia and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-12-24 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few island nations have stirred the soul like Cuba. From Hemingway's intoxicating Havana to Ry Cooder's Buena Vista Social Club, outsiders have persistently been fascinated by Cuba for its music (jazz to rumba), its rich literature, its art and dance (danzón to mambo) and perhaps above all for its bold experiment of a socialist revolution in action. Antoni Kapcia shows how the thaw in relations between Cuba and the USA now makes a fresh appraisal of the country and its modern history essential. He authoritatively explores the 'essence' of the Cuban revolution, revealing it to be a maverick phenomenon tied not so much to socialism or Communism for their own sakes but instead to an idealistic vision of postcolonial nationalism. Reassessing the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962, the author examines the central personalities: not just the famous trio of Che Guevara, Fidel and Raúl Castro in shaping the ideas of the revolution but, still further back, the visionary ideology of José Martí. Kapcia's book reflects on the future of the revolution as aúl nd his government began to cede power to a new generation.
Book Synopsis Fifty Years of Revolution by : Soraya M. Castro Mariño
Download or read book Fifty Years of Revolution written by Soraya M. Castro Mariño and published by University Press of Florida. This book was released on 2012-08-15 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the years since the Cuban Revolution in 1959, eleven men have served as president of the United States, arguably the most powerful nation on earth. Yet none of them has been able to effect any significant change in the stalemate between the United States and Cuba, its closest neighbor not to share a land border. Fifty Years of Revolution features contributions from an international Who's Who gallery of leading scholars. The volume adopts a uniquely nonpartisan attitude, a departure from this topic's generally divisive nature. Emerging from a series of meetings, conference panels, and lectures, the book coheres more strongly than the typical essay collection. Organized to analyze--not describe--Cuba’s foreign relations, the work examines sanctions, the embargo, regime change, Guantánamo, the exile community, and more. Drawing from personal experiences as well as recently declassified documents, these essays update, summarize, and explain one of the prickliest political issues in the Western Hemisphere today.

In this analysis it takes into account the great differences – social, economic and cultural – between the countries of the area and looks at the foreign policies of Latin American countries as well as the United States and the role of international Communism.
Book Synopsis The United States and the Origins of the Cuban Revolution by : Jules R. Benjamin

This book was released on 2020-06-30 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jules Benjamin argues convincingly that modern conflicts between Cuba and the United States stem from a long history of U.S. hegemony and Cuban resistance. He shows what difficulties the smaller country encountered because of U.S. efforts first to make it part of an "empire of liberty" and later to dominate it by economic methods, and he analyzes the kind of misreading of ardent nationalism that continues to plague U.S. policymaking.

Book Synopsis Cuban Youth and Revolutionary Values by : Denise F. Blum
Download or read book Cuban Youth and Revolutionary Values written by Denise F. Blum and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2011-01-15 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on extensive fieldwork in Havana's secondary schools, Cuban Youth and Revolutionary Values is a remarkable ethnography, charting the government's attempts to transform a future generation of citizens. While Cuba's high literacy rate is often lauded, the little-known dropout rates among teenagers receive less scrutiny. In vivid, succinct reporting, educational anthropologist Denise Blum now shares her findings regarding this overlooked aspect of the Castro legacy. Despite the fact that primary-school enrollment rates exceed those of the United States, the reverse is true for the crucial years between elementary school and college. After providing a history of Fidel Castro's educational revolution begun in 1953, Denise Blum delivers a close examination of the effects of the program, which was designed to produce a society motivated by benevolence rather than materialism. Exploring pioneering pedagogy, the notion of civic education, and the rural components of the program, Cuban Youth and Revolutionary Values brims with surprising findings about one of the most intriguing social experiments in recent history.

Book Synopsis Cuban Communism by : Irving Louis Horowitz
Download or read book Cuban Communism written by Irving Louis Horowitz and published by Transaction Publishers. This book was released on with total page 934 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is no handier guide to the Castro regime and the debates swirling around it.-Foreign Affairs Appearing in the aftermath of the stunning events surrounding the Elian Gonzalez case, the nature of Cuban Communism has again become a core issue for the American people. Cuban Communism has widely come to be known as "the Bible of Cuban Studies." It has been updated and upgraded for the fourth decade of Castro's successful seizure of power, the longest running dictatorship in the world. In addition to articles and essays representing recent developments in Cuba, the work boasts an update of three new features that will make it even more important to students, scholars, and researchers in the area. The volume has an entirely new section on future prospects for civil society and democracy for Cuba in a post-Castro environment. It also contains a chronology of events from 1959 through 2000 that will be important as a guide for studying the period. Finally, the work contains a brief but carefully constructed who's who of important players in Cuba and the regime during the Castro-period. Some of the articles new to the tenth edition of Cuban Communism are by Ernesto Betancourt, "Technical Assistance Needs for Institutional Transformation"; Andrew Natsios, "Humanitarian Assistance During a Democratic Transition in Cuba"; Juan J. Lopez, "Non-Transition in Cuba"; Michael Radu, "United States and Cuba after Castro"; Sergio Diaz-Briquets, "International Lending Institutions in Cuba's Transition Process," and "Future Security Issues between the United States and Cuba" by Brian Latell. This edition sheds new light on why, despite predictions of imminent collapse, the Castro regime has remained in power. It offers insights into the survival potential of dictatorships and illegitimate regimes despite crisis and ostracism. It is, more than ever, a must volume for those interested in comparative political systems and social structures. Irving Louis Horowitz is Hannah Arendt Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Sociology and Political Science at Rutgers University. Among his works are Three Worlds of Development, Beyond Empire and Revolution, and the Bacardi Lectures on Cuba, published as The Conscience of Worms and the Cowardice of Lions. Book Synopsis Cuba (Winner of the Pulitzer Prize) by : Ada Ferrer
Download or read book Cuba (Winner of the Pulitzer Prize) written by Ada Ferrer and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2022-06-28 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1961, at the height of the Cold War, the United States severed diplomatic relations with Cuba, where a momentous revolution had taken power three years earlier. For more than half a century, the stand-off continued--through the tenure of ten American presidents and the fifty-year rule of Fidel Castro. His death in 2016, and the retirement of his brother and successor Raúl Castro in 2021, have spurred questions about the country's future. Meanwhile, politics in Washington--Barack Obama's opening to the island, Donald Trump's reversal of that policy, and the election of Joe Biden--have made the relationship between the two nations a subject of debate once more. Now, award-winning historian Ada Ferrer delivers an ambitious chronicle written for an era that demands a new reckoning with the island's past. Spanning more than five centuries, Cuba: An American History reveals the evolution of the modern nation, with its dramatic record of conquest and colonization, of slavery and freedom, of independence and revolutions made and unmade. Along the way, Ferrer explores the influence of the United States on Cuba and the many ways the island has been a recurring presence in US affairs. This is a story that will give Americans unexpected insights into the history of their own nation and, in so doing, help them imagine a new relationship with Cuba. Filled with rousing stories and characters, and drawing on more than thirty years of research in Cuba, Spain, and the United States--as well as the author's own extensive travel to the island over the same period--this is a stunning and monumental account like no other. --
