Book Synopsis A Guide to Protein Isolation by : C. Dennison
Download or read book A Guide to Protein Isolation written by C. Dennison and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is a truism of science that the more fundamental the subject, the more universally applicable it is. Neverthelens, it is important to strike a level of "fundamentalness" appropriate to the task in hand. For example, an in-depth study of the mechanics of motor cars would tell one nothing about the dynamics of traffic. Traffic exists on a different "level" - it is dependent upon the existence of motor vehicles but the physics and mathematics of traffic can be adequately addressed by considering motor vehicles as mobile "blobs", with no consideration of how they become mobile. To start a discourse on traffic with a consideration of the mechanics of motor vehicles would thus be inappropropriate. In writing this volume, I have wrestled with the question of the appropriate level at which to address the physics underlying many of the techniques used in protein isolation. I have tried to strike a level as would be used by a mechanic (with perhaps a slight leaning towards an engineer) - i.e. a practical level, offering appropriate insight but with minimal mathematics. Some people involved in biochemical research have a minimal grounding in chemistry and physics and so I have tried to keep it as simple as possible.
Book Synopsis Clinical Applications of Capillary Electrophoresis by : Stephen M. Palfrey
Download or read book Clinical Applications of Capillary Electrophoresis written by Stephen M. Palfrey and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-02-01 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Clinical Applications of Capillary Electrophoresis, Stephen Palfrey brings together for first time a collection of detailed capillary electrophoresis protocols designed exclusively for clinical applications. Written by the leading scientists who have often perfected these methods in their own laboratories, the protocols furnish new and more powerful assays for many routine serum and blood tests now regularly performed in clinical laboratories, including urine protein analysis, hemoglobin separation, and the detection of CSF proteins, lipoproteins, myoglobin, cryoglobulins, HbA1c, and cathepsin. The protocols offered for DNA studies include double-stranded DNA analysis, the prenatal diagnosis of Down's syndrome, Rh D/d genotyping, the identification of mutated p53 oncogene, and the detection of microsatellite instability in cancers. Many of the methods can be automated to replace the more costly and labor-intensive tests that are currently used in most clinical laboratories. Clinical Applications of Capillary Electrophoresis demonstrates clearly the simplicity, versatility, and power of CE over conventional methods. It offers to beginning clinical investigators, as well as established laboratories new to the technique, a representative range of highly practical CE methods-assays that are not only certain to become ever more productive, but are already eminently useful today.

Book excerpt: Proteins are the functional units of the cellular machinery and they provide significant information regarding the molecular basis of health and disease. Therefore, techniques to separate and isolate the various proteins are critical to studying and understanding their functional characteristics. One of the widely used techniques for this purpose is electrophoresis. In Protein Electrophoresis: Methods and Protocols, contributions from experts in the field have been collected in order to provide practical guidelines to this complex study. Each chapter outlines a specific electrophoretic variant in detail so that laboratory scientists may perform a technique new to their lab without difficulty. Written in the successful Methods in Molecular BiologyTM series format, chapters include introductions to their respective topics, lists of the necessary materials and reagents, step-by-step, readily reproducible protocols, and notes on troubleshooting and avoiding known pitfalls. Authoritative and accessible, Protein Electrophoresis: Methods and Protocols seeks to serve laboratory scientists with well-honed, detailed methodologies in an effort to further our knowledge of this essential field.
Book Synopsis Electrophoretic and Isoelectric Focusing Techniques in Fisheries Management by : Donald H. Whitmore
Download or read book Electrophoretic and Isoelectric Focusing Techniques in Fisheries Management written by Donald H. Whitmore and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1990-09-24 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Probably the most ubiquitous biochemical method used today for examining the genetics of individuals, populations, or phylogenetic relationships between taxa is electrophoresis. This book has been created to offer a viewpoint regarding current electrophoretic separation methodologies of macromolecules and their major applications to fisheries management. The chapters in this book have been selected and organized into three sections to create a carefully blended mixture of methodologies and applications designed to educate the novice, as well as stimulate interest in professional researchers currently using electrophoresis for their work. The first section includes chapters that discuss the principles that explain the genetic basis of multiple molecular forms of proteins, the theory and practice of DNA analyses, and the methodology of electrophoretic separation of these macromolecules; starch gel electrophoresis as the predominant electrophoretic tool for fisheries genetics; and protein isoelectric focusing and DNA analysis. The second section describes a variety of applications for electrophoretic techniques. The third section presents a discussion and results of experiments conducted by Dennis Powers and his associates regarding the physiological significance of multiple forms of enzymes using the fish Fundulus heteroclitus as a model system. The book features a catalog of nearly 100 enzyme staining recipes and covers new areas in electrophoretic work, such as DNA fingerprinting, genetic tags, mitochondrial DNA methodologies, and genomic manipulation of fish stocks. This book will provide a useful reference resource for fisheries biologists at federal, state, and local levels; fisheries researchers at universities; and students pursuing degrees involving research in fish genetics.
