Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Routledge Companion to the American Landscape provides a comprehensive overview of the American landscape in a way fit for the twenty-first century, not only in its topical and regional scope but also in its methodological and disciplinary diversity. Critically surveying the contemporary scholarship on the American landscape, this companion brings together scholars from the social sciences and humanities who focus their work on understanding the polyphonic evolution of the United States’ landscape. It simultaneously assesses the development of the US landscape as well as the scholarly thought that has driven innovation and continued research about that landscape. Four broad sections focus on key areas of scholarship: environmental landscapes, social, cultural, and popular identities in the landscape, political landscapes, and urban/economic landscapes. A special essay, "American Landscapes Under Siege" and accompanying short case studies call attention to the legacies and realities of race in the American landscape, bridging the discussion of social and political landscapes. This companion offers an invaluable and up-to-date guide for scholars and graduate students to current thinking across the range of disciplines which converge in the study of place, including Geography, Cultural Studies, and History as well as the interdisciplinary fields of American Studies, Environmental Studies, and Planning.
Download or read book Star Trek written by Duncan Barrett and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-08-05 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a world shrunk by modern transport and communication, Star Trek has maintained the values of western maritime exploration through the discovery of ‘strange new worlds’ in space. Throughout its fifty-year history, the ‘starry sea’ has provided a familiar backdrop to an ongoing interrogation of what it means to be human. This book charts the developing Star Trek story from the 1960s through to the present day. Although the core values and progressive politics of the series’ earliest episodes have remained at the heart of Star Trek throughout half a century, in other ways the story it tells has shifted with the times. While The Original Series and The Next Generation showed a faith in science and rationalism, and in a benign liberal leadership, with Deep Space Nine and Voyager that ‘modern’ order began to decline, as religion, mental illness and fragmented identities took hold. Now fully revised and updated to include the prequel series Enterprise and the current reboot film series, this new second edition of Star Trek: The Human Frontier – published to coincide with Star Trek’s golden jubilee celebrations – addresses these issues in a range of cultural contexts, and draws together an unusual combination of expertise. Written to appeal to both the true Trekker and those who don’t know Star Trek from Star Wars, the book explores and explains the ideas and ideals behind a remarkable cultural phenomenon.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What happened to the usage of common sense in the decision making process? In The Invisible Man writer James Leonard Nobles offers some new perspectives on and insightful resolutions for the challenges confronting modern society in the 21st century. And he refuses to submit to the political correctness being forced upon us by the Powerbrokers of Hypocrisy. Through persuasive arguments and satire, Mr. Nobles takes on the Institutions that have betrayed the American people. He says, "The history that is written is not always the history that was, and the truth is often hidden beneath ideological propaganda." With candor seldom shown today, Jim openly discusses the controversial issues tearing at the hearts and souls of most decent men and women. The Invisible Man examines the declining social values and the consequences of our choices. For we stand at the fork of fate. One path is the end and the other path is a new beginning. Choose wisely for there is no going back. About the Author: Author James Leonard Nobles is a new voice from a section of the population often forgotten by society. But he represents the majority of Americans who are fed up with their government, both political parties, irresponsible corporations, and the greed of a few. Born with congenital cataracts in 1960, he knows firsthand how difficult the struggles in life can be. After dropping out of college, Jim returned at the age of 40, where he became the first college graduate in his family. Graduating in August of 2005 with a B.S. in Communications and Information Technology (New Media), he has been working tirelessly on The Invisible Man for close to four years (first year writing; last three years editing and publishing).
Book Synopsis Vaccine: The Cull by : Stephanie C. Fox
Download or read book Vaccine: The Cull written by Stephanie C. Fox and published by QueenBeeBooks. This book was released on 2015-08-03 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you ever read a dystopian novel in which you wondered how the world as we know it collapsed? Well…this novel explains that. Most apocalypse stories begin sometime in the future, after the devastation has been wrought. Not this one. This one lets you watch the horror unfold. Vaccine: The Cull - Nae-Née Wasn't Enough continues the tale of Nae-Née with a study of U.N. Agenda 21's “green”, “eco-friendly”, and “sustainability” policies while a New World Order perpetrates a covert population cull via a vaccine with a secret ingredient: a nanite that destroys cancer tumor suppressor proteins. This is a resource war. After the U.N. population treaty implemented a policy of world-wide use of the birth control nanite, Nae-Née, human-caused stressors on the ecosystem literally heated up. No longer was our planet on the brink of collapse due to biodiversity loss, rising sea levels, floods, droughts, overdependence on fossil fuels, and the climate changes that drive all that. No – collapse was upon us at last. The measures taken to handle resource shortages right in everyone’s backyards are shown: a population cull hidden in a vaccine, and a militarized surveillance society to manage the overflow.

Book Synopsis Exploring the Next Frontier by : Matthew Wilhelm Kapell
Download or read book Exploring the Next Frontier written by Matthew Wilhelm Kapell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-02-19 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1960s and early 70s saw the evolution of Frontier Myths even as scholars were renouncing the interpretive value of myths themselves. Works like Joe Haldeman’s The Forever War exemplified that rejection using his experiences during the Vietnam War to illustrate the problematic consequences of simple mythic idealism. Simultaneously, Americans were playing with expanded and revised versions of familiar Frontier Myths, though in a contemporary context, through NASA’s lunar missions, Star Trek, and Gerard K. O’Neill’s High Frontier. This book examines the reasons behind the exclusion of Frontier Myths to the periphery of scholarly discourse, and endeavors to build a new model for understanding their enduring significance. This model connects NASA’s failed attempts to recycle earlier myths, wholesale, to Star Trek’s revision of those myths and rejection of the idea of a frontier paradise, to O’Neill’s desire to realize such a paradise in Earth’s orbit. This new synthesis defies the negative connotations of Frontier Myths during the 1960s and 70s and attempts to resuscitate them for relevance in the modern academic context.

Book Synopsis Star Trek and Sacred Ground by : Jennifer E. Porter
Download or read book Star Trek and Sacred Ground written by Jennifer E. Porter and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2016-02-24 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on a number of methodologies and disciplinary perspectives, this book boldly goes where none has gone before by focusing on the interplay between Star Trek, religion, and American culture as revealed in the four different Trek television series, and the major motion pictures as well. Explored from a Trek perspective are the portrayal and treatment of religion; the religious and mythic elements; the ritual aspects of the fan following; and the relationship between religion and other issues of contemporary concern. Divided into three sections, this detailed study of religion, myth, and ritual in the Star Trek context extends the boundaries of the traditional categories of religious studies, and explores the process of the (re)creation of culture. The first section explores the ways in which religion has primarily been understood in the Star Trek franchise in relationship to science, technology, scientism, and 'secular humanism.' What do Star Trek and its creator Gene Roddenberry have to say about religion, and what does this reveal about changing American perceptions about the role, value, and place of religion in everyday life? Section Two examines the mythic power and appeal of Star Trek, and highlights the mythic and symbolic parallels between the series' story lines and themes taken from both western religious tradition and the scientific and technological components of contemporary North American Society. In the final section, contributors discuss the mythic and ritual aspects of Star Trek fandom. How have Star Trek fans found meaning and value in the television programs, and how do they express that meaning in their lives? Contributors include Robert Asa, Michael Jindra, Larry Kreitzer, Jeffrey S. Lamp, Peter Linford, Ian Maher, Anne Pearson, Gregory Peterson, and Jon Wagner.
