Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Final Report describes our research of hypersonic and supersonic boundary-layer flows. In spite of its extreme importance to the accurate prediction of drag and heating requirements in high-speed flow, the study of boundary-layer transition in hypersonic (NASP) and supersonic (fighter and high-speed civil transport) flows is still very much in its infancy. Transition is well known, however, to depend strongly on such effects as pressure gradient, wall curvature, sweep, roughness, wall mass transfer, freestream and wall temperature, nose radius, nonequilibrium chemistry, and freestream disturbances. (These effects have been discussed in any number of workshops and U.S. Transition Study Group meetings under the direction of Eli Reshotko.) We have completed detailed studies of the stability of the laminar basic state of 2-D and axisymmetric boundary layers with non-equilibrium chemistry included and 3-D boundary-layer flows of an ideal gas. (Relatively simple geometries were considered due to the anticipated difficulties in performing basic-state analyses.).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transition location can be a significant source of uncertainty in high-speed vehicle drag and heating predictions. Also, the efficacy of transition control depends largely on where transition is predicted. Because of facility noise, transition measurements in ground-test facilities are generally not reliable predictors of flight performance and we must rely on computational approaches for design for flight. The program at Arizona State University to investigate stability and transition of hypersonic boundary-layer flows has been ongoing for several years. In this final report we compile the significant theoretical and computational results from this program. The research has progressed through several logical steps with increasing complexity: Linear stability theory with the effects of chemistry and bow shock on a sharp circular cone at zero incidence with a PNS basic state. Examine 3-D effects on a sharp elliptic cone at zero incidence with a PNS basic state. Include nose bluntness (entropy layer and curved shock) plus nonequilibrium chemistry on a circular cone in the nonlinear Stability Equations with a Navier-Stokes basic state. Provide a new crossflow Reynolds number including compressibility and wall-temperature effects for use in conceptual design.

Book excerpt: This Final Report describes our program in studies of (laminar/turbulent) stability and transition in non-equilibrium chemistry flows characteristic of those on the forebodies of hypersonic vehicles. The configuration best modelling a hypersonic vehicle is an elliptic cone. Specifically, we investigated and optimized a Parabolized Navier-Stokes solution for the basic-state flow past a sharp elliptic cone including the region between the wall and the shock. We formulated the Parabolized Stability Equations for 3-D flows.

This book was released on 2001 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High-order schemes are necessary for the DNS of stability and transition of hypersonic boundary layers because lower-order schemes do not have a sufficient accuracy level to compute small flow details. Currently, the main limiting factor in the application of high-order schemes is the numerical instability of high-order boundary closure schemes. In a previous AIAA paper (2001-0437), we presented a family of high-order nonuniform-grid finite-difference schemes with stable boundary closures for multi-dimensional flow simulations. In this paper, the high-order nominiform-grid schemes (up to 11th order) are applied to the numerical simulation of the receptivity of hypersonic boundary layers to freestream disturbances over a blunt leading edge. The stability and numerical accuracy of the new high-order nonuniform-grid schemes are evaluated for computing the nonlinear 2-D Navier-Stokes equations for hypersonic flow simulations.

Book excerpt: A detailed look at some of the more modern issues of hydrodynamic stability, including transient growth, eigenvalue spectra, secondary instability. It presents analytical results and numerical simulations, linear and selected nonlinear stability methods. By including classical results as well as recent developments in the field of hydrodynamic stability and transition, the book can be used as a textbook for an introductory, graduate-level course in stability theory or for a special-topics fluids course. It is equally of value as a reference for researchers in the field of hydrodynamic stability theory or with an interest in recent developments in fluid dynamics. Stability theory has seen a rapid development over the past decade, this book includes such new developments as direct numerical simulations of transition to turbulence and linear analysis based on the initial-value problem.

Book excerpt: This thesis first reveals the mechanism of Görtler instabilities and then demonstrates how transitions at hypersonic flows can be effectively controlled (either promoted or suppressed) with Görtler or Klebanoff modes. It focuses on understanding and controlling flow transitions from mild laminar to fully turbulent flows at high speeds—aspects that have become crucial at the dawn of an incredible era, in which hypersonic vehicles are becoming available. Once this occurs, it will be possible to travel from Beijing to Los Angeles within just 2 hours, and we will all live in a genuinely global village—and not just virtually, but physically. Görtler instabilities have often been used to promote flow transition in hypersonic vehicles. However, how Görtler instabilities are excited and how they evolve in hypersonic flows are questions that have yet to be answered.

Book excerpt: The objective of this research project is to compare our numerical simulation solutions with available experimental or theoretical results on hypersonic boundary layer receptivity and stability; and to conduct extensive DNS studies on the flow mechanisms of hypersonic boundary layer receptivity and stability. During the three-year period, we have conducted extensive DNS studies on the receptivity of hypersonic boundary layer flows over a sharp wedge, a flat plate, a blunt cone, and the FRESH aeroshell. DNS studies are compared with Stetson's 1984 stability experiment on Mach 7.99 flow over a blunt cone, and Maslov's leading-edge receptivity experiment on Mach 5.92 flow over a flat plate. Our numerical studies have been validated to be of high accuracy and led to further understanding of hypersonic boundary layer receptivity mechanism. Such understanding can lead to better tools for the prediction and control of high-speed boundary layer transition.

Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the Workshop on In stability, Transition and Turbulence, sponsored by the Institute for Computer Applications in Science and Engineering (ICASE) and the NASA Langley Research Center (LaRC), during July 8 to August 2, 1991. This is the second workshop in the series on the subject. The first was held in 1989, and its proceedings were published by Springer-Verlag under the title "Instability and Transition" edited by M. Y. Hussaini and R. G. Voigt. The objectives of these work shops are to i) expose the academic community to current technologically im portant issues of transition and turbulence in shear flows over the entire speed range, ii) acquaint the academic community with the unique combination of theoretical, computational and experimental capabilities at LaRC and foster interaction with these capabilities, and iii) accelerate progress in elucidating the fundamental phenomena of transition and turbulence, leading to improved transition and turbulence modeling in design methodologies. The research areas covered in these proceedings include receptiv ity and roughness, nonlinear theories of transition, numerical simu lation of spatially evolving flows, modelling of transitional and fully turbulent flows as well as some experiments on instability and tran sition. In addition a one-day mini-symposium was held to discuss 1 recent and planned experiments on turbulent flow over a backward facing step.

In the first phase of the investigation, arrays of hot film probes were used to measure the three-dimensional structure of instability waves on an axisymmetric cone at Mach 8. In the second phase, linear stability theory was used to design a cone with an elliptic cross section, which was also tested at Mach 8. Results show that disturbances on the axisymmetric cone travel in wave packets with predominantly zero wave angle. On the elliptic cone, only weak evidence for stationary waves was found. The predominant waves were traveling waves at about 12 kHz. Additional waves, probably second mode, occurred near 80 kHz.

Book excerpt: These three volumes entitled Advances in Hypersonics contain the Proceedings of the Second and Third Joint US/Europe Short Course in Hypersonics which took place in Colorado Springs and Aachen. The Second Course was organized at the US Air Force Academy, USA in January 1989 and the Third Course at Aachen, Germany in October 1990. The main idea of these Courses was to present to chemists, com puter scientists, engineers, experimentalists, mathematicians, and physicists state of the art lectures in scientific and technical dis ciplines including mathematical modeling, computational methods, and experimental measurements necessary to define the aerothermo dynamic environments for space vehicles such as the US Orbiter or the European Hermes flying at hypersonic speeds. The subjects can be grouped into the following areas: Phys ical environments, configuration requirements, propulsion systems (including airbreathing systems), experimental methods for external and internal flow, theoretical and numerical methods. Since hyper sonic flight requires highly integrated systems, the Short Courses not only aimed to give in-depth analysis of hypersonic research and technology but also tried to broaden the view of attendees to give them the ability to understand the complex problem of hypersonic flight. Most of the participants in the Short Courses prepared a docu ment based on their presentation for reproduction in the three vol umes. Some authors spent considerable time and energy going well beyond their oral presentation to provide a quality assessment of the state of the art in their area of expertise as of 1989 and 1991.
