The craze for learning spoken English has led to the growth of coaching institutes all over the country. Much as they may profess and advertise, it is not really possible to learn any language in 30 days. A person who genuinely wants to learn the language needs to spend two to three hours every day for at least five or six months before he or she would feel confident to communicate in English. The prime objective of this book is to encourage students to learn English as a tool of communication and to enable them to understand the language thoroughly. The book basically takes off from the learner's point of view and guides them through cooperative learning methods in order to help master the effective communication skills in English. The book has been divided into four convenient units of Grammar, Pronunciation, Conversation and Vocabulary. Each chapter covers one main area of learning English - explained with examples. Carefully selected and graded exercises have also been included throughout the book to give readers ample practice and a complete understanding of the subject. In short, the book follows the modern functional approach to the study of English. So readers, it is definitely a one-stop solution for speaking English! #v&spublishers

Download or read book The Traditional Ecological Knowledge of the Solega written by Aung Si and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-12-09 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers the ethnobiology and traditional ecological knowledge (TEK) of the Solega people of southern India. Solega TEK is shown to be a complex, inter-related network of detailed observations of natural phenomena, well-reasoned and often highly accurate theorizing, as well as a belief system, derived from cultural norms, regarding the relationships between humans and other species on the one hand, and between non-human species on the other. As language-based studies are strongly biased toward investigations of ethno-taxonomy and nomenclature, the importance of studying TEK in its proper context is discussed as making context and encyclopedic knowledge the objects of study are essential for a proper understanding of TEK.

Book Synopsis Language Policy and Political Economy by : Thomas Ricento
Download or read book Language Policy and Political Economy written by Thomas Ricento and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2015 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: English is the common denominator that unites the work presented in this volume; it provides a focal point to illustrate the ways in which a political economic approach can account for a range of phenomena in diverse settings in which a "global" language has attained a special status as (an often perceived) tool for socioeconomic mobility. The findings reveal the complex ways in which government leaders and policymakers, as well as communities and individuals in those communities, make decisions within a global economy about the languages that will be taught as subjects or used as media of instruction in schools. Whether or not the "Straight for English" policy that has become popular in various countries in southern Africa and elsewhere is a good or bad idea, in terms of improving school completion and literacy rates, English is often promoted by its advocates as a social "good" with unquestioned instrumental value; yet access to quality English medium education in low-income countries is mostly restricted to those with sufficient economic means to pay for it. As the capitalist world-economy undergoes transformations, and assuming that translation technologies continue to improve, it is likely that the roles and relative importance that English as a global language has enjoyed over the past century will change significantly. Synchronic contextual analyses of English in various countries and regions are snapshots of a moving target with fuzzy boundaries; this is even more so the case when the object of analysis is "lingua franca English," a fluid, contextually realized "practice" that may be described in situ, which is not stable and likely never will be. The degree to which English serves effectively as a lingua franca depends on who the interlocutors are, the situation, and the extent to which interlocutors' interests and goals are mutually compatible and understood.

Book Synopsis Language Processing in Bilinguals (RLE Linguistics C: Applied Linguistics) by : Jyotsna Vaid
Download or read book Language Processing in Bilinguals (RLE Linguistics C: Applied Linguistics) written by Jyotsna Vaid and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-01-10 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For decades, bilingualism has resisted definition. If bilingualism is defined as habitual, fluent, correct and accent-free use of two languages, few individuals would qualify as bilinguals. A more viable approach may be to concede that ‘bilingual’ can be seen instead as a range of points on a continuum that allows for differences. The psychological study of bilingualism encompasses a wide range of phenomena including the organization and representation of the grammar, the perception and production of language mixing, cerebral lateralization of language functions, and patterns of recovery of aphasic patients. This book collects together an international array of researchers in experimental psychology, linguistics and neuropsychology, who bring their expertise to bear on the critical issues that are raised by the bilingual phenomena.

Book Synopsis The Politics of English Language Education and Social Inequality by : Maya Kalyanpur
Download or read book The Politics of English Language Education and Social Inequality written by Maya Kalyanpur and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-12-30 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on policy analysis and empirical data, this book examines the problematic consequences of colonial legacies of language policies and English language education in the multilingual contexts of the Global South. Using a postcolonial lens, the volume explores the raciolinguistics of language hierarchies that results in students from low-income backgrounds losing their mother tongues without acquiring academic fluency in English. Using findings from five major research projects, the book analyzes the specific context of India, where ambiguous language policies have led to uneasy tensions between the colonial language of English, national and state languages, and students’ linguistic diversity is mistaken for cognitive deficits when English is the medium of instruction in schools. The authors situate their own professional and personal experiences in their efforts at dismantling postcolonial structures through reflective practice as teacher educators, and present solutions of decolonial resistance to linguistic hierarchies that include critical pedagogical alternatives to bilingual education and opportunities for increased teacher agency. Ultimately, this timely volume will appeal to researchers, scholars, academics, and students in the fields of international and comparative education, English and literacy studies, and language arts more broadly. Those interested in English language learning in low-income countries specifically will also find this book to be of benefit to their research.
