Watkins takes a historical perspective, demonstrating how gender relations are constituted by social arrangements, ideologies, division of labor, and by new forms of economic production. Additionally, she considers gender roles in relation to international trade and Buddhism. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first work to address the question of what kinds of words get borrowed in a systematic and comparative perspective. It studies lexical borrowing behavior on the basis of a world-wide sample of 40 languages, both major languages and minor languages, and both languages with heavy borrowing and languages with little lexical influence from other languages. The book is the result of a five-year project bringing together a unique group of specialists of many different languages and areas. The introductory chapters provide a general up-to-date introduction to language contact at the word level, as well as a presentation of the project's methodology. All the chapters are based on samples of 1000-2000 words, elicited by a uniform meaning list of 1460 meanings. The combined database, comprising over 70,000 words, is published online at the same time as the book is published. For each word, information about loanword status is given in the database, and the 40 case studies in the book describe the social and historical contact situations in detail. The final chapter draws general conclusions about what kinds of words tend to get borrowed, what kinds of word meanings are particularly resistant to borrowing, and what kinds of social contact situations lead to what kinds of borrowing situations.

Book excerpt: This is the first scholarly treatment of the emergence of American Buddhist Studies as a significant research field. Until now, few investigators have turned their attention to the interpretive challenge posed by the presence of all the traditional lineages of Asian Buddhism in a consciously multicultural society. Nor have scholars considered the place of their own contributions as writers, teachers, and practising Buddhists in this unfolding saga. In thirteen chapters and a critical introduction to the field, the book treats issues such as Asian American Buddhist identity, the new Buddhism, Buddhism and American culture, and the scholar's place in American Buddhist Studies. The volume offers complete lists of dissertations and theses on American Buddhism and North American dissertations and theses on topics related to Buddhism since 1892.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Bible study of Ruwach, the Holy Spirit, through the original languages, reveals irrefutable evidence that Holy Spirit is the third Person of the Godhead, and She is a beautiful glorious She. Why does this matter, especially to women? It matters because the annihilation and denigration of the feminine in the Godhead meant the annihilation and denigration of the feminine on earth. These deceptions, this lie, originated in the Garden of Eden at the Fall, and it is time to mend and correct the record. WomenaEUR(tm)s entire identity, meaning, purpose, significance, security, worth, creativity, love, relationship, and destiny are wrapped up in our connection and kinship to the Holy Spirit. Like Her, we are put on this planet to nurture, comfort, succor, help, counsel, and heal. We are an especial creation. Romans 1:20 declares, aEURoeFor since the creation of the world, His [GodaEUR(tm)s] invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so they are without excuse.aEUR Nowhere in the natural world can you find a father and a son without a mother. Matter of fact, in every living created organism, you must have a father and a mother before you can have a son. In all of creation, there exists a beautiful balance of masculine and feminine that mirrors the power and glory of the Godhead. How completely sensible, rational, and logical to clearly see and understand that the three Persons in the Godhead are God the Father, God the Mother, personalities, and purposes! How refreshing and natural to see the Trinity as it really is! To learn more about the deep things of the Holy Spirit, to discover the many ways that you are a reflection of Her, and to understand how to glory in your identity as a beautiful glorious She, we invite you to journey with us through this Ruwach refreshing.

Book excerpt: Selections from the Works of Rudolf Steiner Without the spiritualist movement and the amazing personality of Helena Petrovna Blavatsky, the creator of the Theosophical Society, the spiritual revolution of the twentieth century--the so-called New Age, with all its movers and shakers--would be unimaginable. And the work of Rudolf Steiner, G.I. Gurdjieff, René Guénon, Hazrat Inayat Khan, Sri Aurobindo, R.A. Schwaller de Lubicz, and C.G. Jung could not have become what it was. In this fascinating volume on the Theosophical movement, Rudolf Steiner, one of its primary participants, tells his story in his own words. We are told of the origins of the theosophical movement in spiritualism and somnambulism. We are given Steiner's own version of the relationship between Anthroposophy and Theosophy through his White Lotus Day Lectures, given over several years on the anniversary of Madame Blavatsky's death. Steiner then moves into the realm of occult history, where he relates Theosophy to its historical ground in Western esotericism, especially Rosicrucianism. He reveals events from the seventeenth century that led to the emergence of Freemasonry and other secret societies, as well as the hidden history of the creation of Theosophy in the nineteenth century and the conflicts that still reverberate today between the Anglo-Saxon and Germanic occult streams.
