Book excerpt: Excerpt from Spirit of the Storm: And Other Poems Poets are traditionally supposed (by red-blooded people) to be continually bemoaning their unhappy fate. The truth is that red-blooded people indulge in their feverish and largely meaningless activities, in order not to have any time to contemplate their own unhappy fate - the realization of which would be unendurable. The poet is braver; he can face the truth about his fate. And he has that courage precisely because he can see himself, from high above and from far off, as one of many. So that when he speaks for himself he is - in the degree of his perception - speaking for others. It is for this reason that when we can not write poetry we read it. We find ourselves, in our most secret moods, mirrored in another '8 poems. The poet reveals our hiddenmost hopes and fears to us. And conversely, those who read poetry are those who are debarred only by some technical limitation from Writing it. They are potential poets. Hence the poet has always in a sense, fellow-poets for an audience. And he pleases them to the degree in which he utters for them their unwritten poems. The Here and Now in which mankind is imprisoned has never, it would seem, been more irksome to the im patient soul than since the introduction Oi machinery. It seems that we can bear almost anything better than our nineteenth and twentieth century servitude to the machine. Poets, no matter how' gloomy a view of human fate they took, used to find many things to be incidentally enthusiastic about - such as owers, and stars, and beauti ful women. But the owers are being pushed further and further out of sight by the huge extensions of city brick and mortar; the stars are more and more hidden from our gaze by factory smoke; and beautiful women no longer seen as the consolations of a dreary life, but rather as fellow-victims, are quite as likely to evoke pity as admiration. Thus poetry becomes less and less calcu lated to give immediate cheer; even in its more ostensibly gay moods, it has an undertone of mocking irony. But it has a deeper comfort, which all those who have suffered, and are not afraid to remember it, must ever be grate ful for. After a walk through the commotions, they get a reality of darkness obscuring them from light. In this divine walk, they may be gifted revelations of what truly matters. Sometimes, there are answers. Other times, there are no answers. The walk through the storm opens the door to godly rooms where divine meaning, authentic truth, and deeper understanding reside. Let’s Go Walking in the Storm is a soulful anthology of poetry and reflections. It’s the murky walking trail, with stormy stopovers, to the divine. Through poems and reflections, the book delves into human sufferings, environmental problems, violent conflicts and immigration, the COVID-19 pandemic, and racism and discrimination. As a spiritual journey to seek understanding and acceptance in the chaos, the spirit is also honoured with inspirations. May you find calm when it’s time to walk in the storm.

"ORDERING THE STORM empowers readers to see the poetry collection as an artistic medium in itself, and offers diverse perspectives on the subject. Experienced writers and beginners alike will find inspiration and encouragement in the words of exceptional poets such as Maggie Anderson, Wanda Coleman, and Beckian Fritz Goldberg. This book should be required reading for all graduate student poets, even those who are still in the process of writing their first collection, because it includes essential information on poetic sequencing and useful strategies for examining a manuscript's possibilities. One of the most exciting aspects of the book is the sense of community that readers feel upon exploring each essay. ORDERING THE STORM transforms the task of arranging poems from a solitary undertaking to a collaborative adventure"--Mary Biddinger, Associate Editor of RHINO.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1907, Alfred Castner King's unique and beautiful The Passing of the Storm survives as his most enduring work. A rare example of epic verse, it sends its readers deep into the heart of the ruggedly wild world of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, blending together the pivotal events of that tumultuous era with an ageless tale of brotherly courage and love. Even before his accidental blinding midway through life, it was King's passion to forever memorialize the natural splendor and simple majesty of the American frontier and its humble working class. But it was his continual struggle to come to terms with his late tragedy that gives much of his collected Other Poems their unique and intensely captivating voice. The Passing of the Storm and Other Poems takes readers on a journey through the mind of King as he explores his mournful love of nature and a world now gone, bringing them back to life as he could only do through words. "Alfred Castner King had been a lover of nature, a man of the mountains and forests who had embraced the beauty of the natural world with his heart and soul. His poems were written after an accident left him blind. I have read his poems over the years and, at times, have been overwhelmed by the beauty of his words. King's poetry possesses a spirit that reaches through time and beyond the darkness that shrouded the man."
