Book excerpt: Excerpt from Spalding's Hand Book of Sporting Rules and Training: Containing Full and Authentic Codes of Rules Governing All Popular Games and Sports The remarkable success of Spalding's Library of Athletic Sports and its very general recognition as a national authority on all matters connected with the subjects of which they treat, suggested the publication of this the thirteenth number of the Library of Athletic Sports. The rules and descriptions which it embodies, are gathered for the purpose of supplying a thorough knowledge of any sport in which the reader is liable to be called upon to participate, to referee, or to render a decision in any capacity. The laws for the different sports are intended to cover all disputed points, and we desire to see them adopted by common consent of athletes, and athletic clubs. Before signing articles for a contest of any kind, each participant should be particular to become familiar with some certain rules and see that the papers contain a clause to the effect that those rules are to govern the match; by so doing the chances of disagreement or an unsatisfactory termination will be very slight compared to a decision given simply on the judgment of the referee. The object of this book is not to give all the various codes or rules adopted by the various societies under different names, but to give one reliable set of rules governing each prominent sport. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Building the South Side explores the struggle for influence that dominated the planning and development of Chicago's South Side during the Progressive Era. Robin F. Bachin examines the early days of the University of Chicago, Chicago’s public parks, Comiskey Park, and the Black Belt to consider how community leaders looked to the physical design of the city to shape its culture and promote civic interaction. Bachin highlights how the creation of a local terrain of civic culture was a contested process, with the battle for cultural authority transforming urban politics and blurring the line between private and public space. In the process, universities, parks and playgrounds, and commercial entertainment districts emerged as alternative arenas of civic engagement. “Bachin incisively charts the development of key urban institutions and landscapes that helped constitute the messy vitality of Chicago’s late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century public realm.”—Daniel Bluestone, Journal of American History "This is an ambitious book filled with important insights about issues of public space and its use by urban residents. . . . It is thoughtful, very well written, and should be read and appreciated by anyone interested in Chicago or cities generally. It is also a gentle reminder that people are as important as structures and spaces in trying to understand urban development." —Maureen A. Flanagan, American Historical Review

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout America's past, some men have feared the descent of their gender into effeminacy, and turned their eyes to the ring in hopes of salvation. This work explains how the dominant fight sports in the United States have changed over time in response to broad shifts in American culture and ideals of manhood, and presents a narrative of American history as seen from the bars, gyms, stadiums and living rooms of the heartland. Ordinary Americans were the agents who supported and participated in fight sports and determined its vision of masculinity. This work counters the economic determinism prevalent in studies of American fight sports, which overemphasize profit as the driving force in the popularization of these sports. The author also disputes previous scholarship's domestic focus, with an appreciation of how American fight sports are connected to the rest of the world.

But amateur sports also play a large role in the city's athletic traditions, especially in schools and youth leagues. In fourteen chapters, experts focus on multiple aspects of Chicago sports, including long looks at amateur boxing, the impact of gender and ethnicity in sports, the politics of horse racing and stadium building, the lasting scandal of the Black Sox, and the perpetual heartbreak of the Cubs. Well illustrated with forty photographs, this volume will help historians and sports fans alike appreciate the longstanding importance of sports in Chicago. Contributors are Peter Alter, Robin F. Bachin, Larry Bennett, Linda J. Borish, Gerald Gems, Elliott J. Gorn, Richard Kimball, Gabe Logan, Daniel A. Nathan, Timothy Neary, Steven A. Riess, John Russick, Timothy Spears, Costas Spirou, and Loic Wacquant.
