Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examining popular images that have helped motivate the most ambitious civil space program in the world, McCurdy argues that the spacefaring dream tapped into several of America's most deeply rooted cultural ideals. He also explains how space advocates, playing on the public's Cold War fears, convinced politicians that control of space meant control of the earth. He also contends that the gaps between expectations and reality led to public policy obligated to entertain as well as inform. 43 photos.

Book excerpt: Shortlisted for the 2022 Booker Prize An extraordinary, “playful, moving, and wholly remarkable” (The Guardian) coming-of-age novel filled with myth and magic from one of England's greatest living writers. An introspective young boy, Joseph Coppock is trying to make sense of the world. Living alone in an old house, he spends his time reading comic books, collecting birds’ eggs, and playing with marbles. When one day a rag-and-bone man called Treacle Walker appears on a horse and cart, offering a cure-all medicine, a mysterious friendship develops and the young boy is introduced to a world beyond his wildest imagination. Luminous, evocative, and sparely told, Treacle Walker is a stunning fusion of myth, folklore, and the stories we tell ourselves.

The first three contain ten historical essays on important topics: number theory, calculus/analysis, and proof, respectively. Part four deals with several historically oriented courses, and Part five provides biographies of five mathematicians who played major roles in the historical events described in the first four parts of the work. Excursions in the History of Mathematics was written with several goals in mind: to arouse mathematics teachers’ interest in the history of their subject; to encourage mathematics teachers with at least some knowledge of the history of mathematics to offer courses with a strong historical component; and to provide an historical perspective on a number of basic topics taught in mathematics courses.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New Voices in Native American Literary Criticism brings together more than twenty Native American and non-Native American critics working in the United States and abroad to explore the oral and textual expressions of Native Americans past and present. Many of the contributors represent a new generation of literary criticism: younger scholars and experts in the field who have not, for the most part, been published widely. The essays discuss Inuit writing, Hopi clowning, Huichol funeral oration, contemporary poetry in the ancient language of Nahuatl, and the narratives of Ojibwe, Koasati, and Shuar storytellers. Contributors also examine the works of Gerald Vizenor, Leslie Marmon Silko, Mourning Dove, Todd Downing, Sarah Winnemucca Hopkins, and other writers. A final section of essays or "ethnocritiques" examines Western and non-Western model of knowledge and expression, and contrasting approaches to translation and transliteration. Reflecting a variety of disciplines - including anthropology, linguistics, and literature - this volume will be of interest to nonspecialists as well as specialists in American Indian literatures. More than ten tribes are represented, encompassing regions from South and Central America, Mexico, and the American Southwest and Southeast north to the Canadian Arctic.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are many excellent books on quantum theory from which one can learn to compute energy levels, transition rates, cross sections, etc. The theoretical rules given in these books are routinely used by physicists to compute observable quantities. Their predictions can then be compared with experimental data. There is no fundamental disagreement among physicists on how to use the theory for these practical purposes. However, there are profound differences in their opinions on the ontological meaning of quantum theory. The purpose of this book is to clarify the conceptual meaning of quantum theory, and to explain some of the mathematical methods which it utilizes. This text is not concerned with specialized topics such as atomic structure, or strong or weak interactions, but with the very foundations of the theory. This is not, however, a book on the philosophy of science. The approach is pragmatic and strictly instrumentalist. This attitude will undoubtedly antagonize some readers, but it has its own logic: quantum phenomena do not occur in a Hilbert space, they occur in a laboratory.
