Book excerpt: Excerpt from South America on the Eve of Emancipation: The Southern Spanish Colonies in the Last Half-Century of Their Dependence In a book called The Establishment of Spanish Rule in America, published in 1898, the present writer gave some account of the origin and earlier history of the institutions framed for the government of Spanish America. This volume aims to present some phases of colonial history and social organization in the last part of the eightteenth century, particularly as they appear in the southern half of South America) The annals of the colonies furnish interesting episodes, but not material for a sustained dramatic narrative. There are periods in the history of some of the colonies, during which one observes few social changes. Men live as their fathers lived and die as their fathers died; and the history of their communities for generations may be told in a few sentences. In attempting to make a connected story of the events of these periods, a writer runs the risk of producing merely a chronicle, or of doing violence to the perspective of time. The task here undertaken is to present certain conspicuous events, institutions, and phases of life, that may illustrate the state of the southern Spanish colonies on the eve of the revolution which gave them independence. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the earliest significant works on historiography of Argentina, The Emancipation of South America, delivers a true and precise biography of San Martin, a great military commander, and one of the Liberators of Spanish South America who was regarded as a national hero of Argentina, Chile, and Peru. Since Martin's life could not be understood unless a complete narrative of the events, he took part in during that period was provided, this work becomes a powerful portrayal of the history of Argentina. The Emancipation of South America is a translation of Bartolomé Mitre's Historia de San Martín y de la emancipación Sudamericana, by William Pilling. In 1892, Pilling wrote from London to Mitre. In his letter, Pilling informed Mitre that to catch the public's attention, he had changed the title, using the actual subtitle instead. In his opinion, "The Emancipation of South America" was somewhat more appealing to English readers than "History of San Martin." Pilling's translation is a precise presentation of the sense and content of the work by Mitre. It comprises a brilliant contribution to the historiography of the independentist revolution in Latin America.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Problem of Emancipation explores a long-neglected aspect of American slavery and the history of the Atlantic World, bridging a gap in our understanding of the American Civil War. It places the origins of the war in a transatlantic context, exploring the impact of Britain's abolition of slavery on the coming of the war, and revealing the strong influence of Britain's old Atlantic empire on the politics of the United States. This ground-breaking study examines how southern and northern American newspapers covered three slave rebellions that preceded British abolition and how American public opinion shifted radically as a result.
Book Synopsis American Mediterranean by : Matthew Pratt Guterl
Download or read book American Mediterranean written by Matthew Pratt Guterl and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2013-03-11 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How did slave-owning Southern planters make sense of the transformation of their world in the Civil War era? Matthew Pratt Guterl shows that they looked beyond their borders for answers. He traces the links that bound them to the wider fraternity of slaveholders in Cuba, Brazil, and elsewhere, and charts their changing political place in the hemisphere. Through such figures as the West Indian Confederate Judah Benjamin, Cuban expatriate Ambrosio Gonzales, and the exile Eliza McHatton, Guterl examines how the Southern elite connectedÑby travel, print culture, even the prospect of future conquestÑwith the communities of New World slaveholders as they redefined their world. He analyzes why they invested in a vision of the circum-Caribbean, and how their commitment to this broader slave-owning community fared. From Rebel exiles in Cuba to West Indian apprenticeship and the Black Codes to the Òlabor problemÓ of the postwar South, this beautifully written book recasts the nineteenth-century South as a complicated borderland in a pan-American vision.
