Book excerpt: The nature of sound is, nowadays, well known and understood so that sound could be synthetically described like the propagation of vibration in elastic media.Sound waves propagate as longitudinal waves, transverse waves, or in mixed modes in different media. The development of applications related to the proper management of the information connected with sound waves. This is the case of so-called acoustic emission. This book introduces the basics of sound waves, their types, propagation in different modes, velocities, and other properties It also introduces the basics of acoustic emission and the different sources of acoustic emission. This book delivers different propagation modes, their significance, and the attenuation and distortion of acoustic waves. One of the overlooked applications of acoustic emission, the acousto-ultrasonic approach is introduced and discussed with practical applications.
Book Synopsis Structural Health Monitoring Damage Detection Systems for Aerospace by : Markus G. R. Sause
Download or read book Structural Health Monitoring Damage Detection Systems for Aerospace written by Markus G. R. Sause and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book presents established methods of structural health monitoring (SHM) and discusses their technological merit in the current aerospace environment. While the aerospace industry aims for weight reduction to improve fuel efficiency, reduce environmental impact, and to decrease maintenance time and operating costs, aircraft structures are often designed and built heavier than required in order to accommodate unpredictable failure. A way to overcome this approach is the use of SHM systems to detect the presence of defects. This book covers all major contemporary aerospace-relevant SHM methods, from the basics of each method to the various defect types that SHM is required to detect to discussion of signal processing developments alongside considerations of aerospace safety requirements. It will be of interest to professionals in industry and academic researchers alike, as well as engineering students. Book Synopsis Acoustic Emission Testing by : Christian U. Grosse
Download or read book Acoustic Emission Testing written by Christian U. Grosse and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-07-12 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Acoustic Emission (AE) techniques have been studied in civil engineering for a long time. The techniques are recently going to be more and more applied to practical applications and to be standardized in the codes. This is because the increase of aging structures and disastrous damages due to recent earthquakes urgently demand for maintenance and retrofit of civil structures in service for example. It results in the need for the development of advanced and effective inspection techniques. Thus, AE techniques draw a great attention to diagnostic applications and in material testing. The book covers all levels from the description of AE basics for AE beginners (level of a student) to sophisticated AE algorithms and applications to real large-scale structures as well as the observation of the cracking process in laboratory specimen to study fracture processes.
Book Synopsis Acoustic Emission - Research and Applications by : Lefteris Tyler
Download or read book Acoustic Emission - Research and Applications written by Lefteris Tyler and published by . This book was released on 2016-04 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Acoustic emission is a technique that is being used increasingly in the field of structural integrity assessment using fracture mechanics. The dynamic behaviour of defects is extremely important as a small defect that is growing may well be more significant than a larger stable defect. Acoustic emission is the method used to investigate the behaviour of defects under stress. When a structure is subjected to an external stimulus (change in pressure, load, or temperature), localized sources trigger the release of energy, in the form of stress waves, which propagate to the surface and are recorded by sensors. With the right equipment and setup, motions on the order of picometers can be identified. Sources of AE vary from natural events like earthquakes and rock bursts to the initiation and growth of cracks, slip and dislocation movements, melting, twinning, and phase transformations in metals. In composites, matrix cracking and fibre breakage and debonding contribute to acoustic emissions. AEs have also been measured and recorded in polymers, wood, and concrete, among other materials. This book entitled Acoustic Emission - Research and Applications shows that the AE method is constantly and intensively emerging and broadly applied in: on-line monitoring of civil-engineering structures, fatigue cracks detection and location in pressure vessels and pipelines, damage assessment in fibre-reinforced polymer-matrix composites, monitoring welding applications and corrosion processes, bearing condition diagnostics, partial discharge sources detection and location in power transformers and generators, monitoring the drying process of materials, and in otoacoustic emission analysis.

Book Synopsis Radiation Acoustics by : Leonid M. Lyamshev
Download or read book Radiation Acoustics written by Leonid M. Lyamshev and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2004-04-14 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Radiation acoustics is a developing field lying at the intersection of acoustics, high-energy physics, nuclear physics, and condensed matter physics. Radiation Acoustics is among the first books to address this promising field of study, and the first to collect all of the most significant results achieved since research in this area began in earnest in the 1970s. The book begins by reviewing the data on elementary particles, absorption of penetrating radiation in a substance, and the mechanisms of acoustic radiation excitation. The next seven chapters present a theoretical treatment of thermoradiation sound generation in condensed media under the action of modulated penetrating radiation and radiation pulses. The author explores particular features of the acoustic fields of moving thermoradiation sound sources, sound excitation by single high-energy particles, and the efficiency and optimal conditions of thermoradiation sound generation. Experimental results follow the theoretical discussions, and these clearly demonstrate the validity of the thermoradiation theory. The book concludes with discussions on applications, including the large-scale DUMAND and GENIUS projects now on the horizon. Radiation acoustics holds enormous potential for applications in areas such as microelectronics, geophysics, and astrophysics. This book offers a unique opportunity to benefit from the approach and extensive experience of author Leonid N. Lyamshev, who in this, his last book, shows how he left an indelible mark on the world of acoustics.

Book Synopsis Acoustics of Wood by : Voichita Bucur
Download or read book Acoustics of Wood written by Voichita Bucur and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-03-09 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Considerable activity in the acoustics of wood has occurred since the first edition of this book in 1995. An informal survey of a number of the published articles and papers presented at international conferences revealed that the interest of the wood science community is continually increasing. In this context, I felt c- pelled to revise the text in accordance with newer findings and this prompted the addition in the present book of 159 new references added to the existing 850 in the first edition. As a result of the favorable comments upon the first edition, from students and colleagues, I have included a part on mathematical theory related to wave pro- gation in orthotropic solids in the general text, in order to enable the interested reader to follow the essentially physical aspects of the subject. A new chapter related to “acousto-ultrasonics” is introduced; Chapters 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 11, and 12 have been considerably expanded and a significant redistribution of the subject matter from the earlier edition has been made.
