Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2006 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,7, Humboldt-University of Berlin (Department of English and American Studies), language: English, abstract: William Shakespeare is not only considered as one of the most famous playwrights of all times, he was even very productive when it came to writing poetry, especially sonnets. In 1609 a book called SHAKE-SPEARES Sonnets was published by Thomas Thorpe in London, which contained 154 sonnets and a longer poem, A Lover's Complaint. The immediate success continues until today, and no other book, except the bible, has been translated more often into German. Many of Shakespeare's themes surely are conventional sonnet topics, such as love and beauty, but he treats these themes in his own, distinctive fashion, and, like in Sonnet 57, addresses the poems of love and praise not to a fair maiden but instead to a young man. The tender terms and the expressed jealousy that the speaker extends toward the beloved youth of the sonnets, led to an indication of a homo erotic relationship, even questions whether Shakespeare himself was engaged in sexual relationships with other men. By so breaking a taboo, Shakespeare overcomes the strict Petrarchan sonnet model; the relationship between speaker and addressed becomes more human and has therefore to deal with real human problems: rejection, treachery and rivalry. Because the lyrics are of an intense and passionate character, many readers and critics have been convinced that they must consist of an autobiographical basis. Endless speculations and researches have attempted to find out which of Shakespeare's personal experiences are reflected in his sonnets as well as to identify the individuals the speaker refers to. There is, however, no clear evidence, that these poems are anything than the product of Shakespeare's own observation, imagination and understanding of the human heart. In my work, I will give an introdution to Shakespeares Sonnets in general and as an example analyze Sonnet 57.

Book excerpt: Wide-ranging discussion of aspects of sonnet history combines in this study with analysis of single poems, by poets from Hoffmannswaldau to Weinheber, to illuminate ways in wich the German sonnet has functioned as a vehicle for a conscious aesthetic traditionalism serving a variety of poetic intentions. Particular stress is laid on the important part played by translation in the transmission of the traditional form, the final chapter being devoted to a survey of German versions of Shakespeare's Sonnets.

Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2010 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,0, University of Tubingen, language: English, abstract: In William Shakespeare’s (1564 – 1616) “Sonnet 130”, published 1609 in his book “Shakespeare’s Sonnets”, the speaker talks about his mistress who does not correspond with the ideals of beauty. The speaker compares her with beautiful things, but he cannot find a similarity. But he points out that his love does not depend on how she looks like. This poem is the total opposite of William Shakespeare’s “Sonnet 18” and makes it, and other poems from this century, look ridiculously and superficially.

Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2006 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 3, University of Graz (Anglistik), course: Einführung in die Literaturwissenschaft I, language: English, abstract: There might be several reasons for the sonnet’s popularity, but it certainly is a very special atmosphere which is created by William Shakespeare, comparing his strong and infinite love with the beauty of a summer’s day (Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?). This term paper should be an interpretation of Shakespeare’s famous Sonnet 18. First, some aspects of the historical background of Shakespeare should enable a better understanding of the author and the time in which the Sonnet was written. Further, the poem will be analysed according to its content (narrative features and setting). On the level of enunciation this paper will give an outline what the typical Shakespearian Sonnet’s structures are (form, meter and rhyme scheme) and how Sonnet 18 is based on them. Then the poem will be analysed according to its phonological, morphological/syntactical and semantic figures.

Book excerpt: Shakespeare's Sonnets (published in 1609 but mostly written in the 1590s) offer surprises everywhere, but two big ones in particular. These relate to the plot and to the range of the poet's passionate feeling. The story line has the makings of a high suspense love drama, but the author wants, more crucially, to explore his thoughts on a myriad of topics in what feels like verse journaling - moody, mercurial, unpredictable, and intense. That's why the genre of the narrative hovers between a play and what we'd now call a psychological novel. Complicating both the dramatic tension and the introspective depth is the bisexual range of the poet's passionate temperament. The fact that his boyfriend and mistress are attracted to each other will account for some of the strong conflicts in the speaker's mind. But the wild oscillations of his feeling toward each of them are also rooted in his widely receptive sexual nature. I'm a dialogic poet, carrying on a long tradition of friendly rivalry among verse writers. Here I undertake a book-length dialogue in sonnets with Shakespeare. The best way to respond to a poem that won't let go of you is to write another poem and try to make it worthy of the first. Often I sum up a lyric from a new perspective. Or I'll respond with parallel or contrasting memories and imaginings of my own. Poets, philosophers, mythic figures, musicians, or novelists may enter my replies. Psychological sidelights will be many. The possibilities revealed by the genre of lyrical response appear unlimited. There's no better con-verse-ation partner than Shakespeare, who gave me a deep love for his favorite lyric form. Entering into it, I assumed a stranger-self, and it made a stranger me.

Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2010 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,3, University of Erfurt, language: English, abstract: For about thirty years sonnet sequences were popular in England (1580s to the 1610s) . A sonnet is a poem of 14 lines of iambic pentameter with an elaborate rhyme scheme. The poets of these forms of poems wrote in order to express their deep human emotions. Especially, poets in Renaissance revealed the philosophy of humanism. Poets of Elizabethan time are mainly concerned with the subject of love. Thereby, they made use on metaphoric and poetic conventions which were developed by Italian poets of the fourteenth century like Petrarch or Dante. The Petrarchan, or Italian sonnet, consists of two quatrains and two tercets. To emphasize the idea of the poem, the rhyme scheme and structure work together. William Shakespeare reshaped the sonnet structure. The English, or Shakespearean sonnet, consists of three quatrains and a concluding couplet. Shakespeare used, like Petrarch, the structure of the sonnet to explore multiple facets of a topic in short. He, despite his high status as a dramatist, attracted no attention as a sonneteer . William Shakespeare was born in 1564 in Stratford upon Avon. In 1609 he retracted from the London live in theatre back to the city of his birth. In the very same year the publisher Thomas Thorpe announced the book “Shake-Speares Sonnets Never before Imprinted”. “When [Shakespeare] published his sonnets – or allowed them to be published – in 1609, the sonnet vogue was all but over [...]” . About the background and the reliability of this edition prevails disagreement. It is not resolved whether Shakespeare had wanted the publication. It is also uncertain whether the order of the sonnets is right or does it make any sense to rearrange the sequence. Even the division of the sequence into two parts – sonnet one till 126 address a young man and sonnet 127 till 154 address the Dark Lady – is questionable because many of the sonnets have no gender-markers. However, most editors accept the ordering from the 1609 edition . With 154 poems, Shakespeare wrote the longest sonnet cycle of the Elizabethan age. If we comply with the assumption of most editors, the poems one till 126 focuses a young blonde man, and the sonnets 127 till 152 are aimed at a Dark Lady who is the “conceptual antithesis of the young man” . The whole sequence ends with two rather insignificant love sonnets which have nothing to do with the previous sonnets.

Book excerpt: This book provides readers with the tools to unravel the complexities of one of the most difficult sonnet sequences, introducing the reader to the literary tradition, stylistic features and cultural contexts of the genre and the sequence, and providing close readings of more than 100 sonnets. This combined approach enables readers not only to disentangle the complex relationships of the poems' characters but also to appreciate their intricate philosophical, sensual and also subversive qualities. Of the book's two sections, the first, "Contexts and Forms", includes chapters on the sonnet tradition, early publication history, and the structural features of both the Shakespearean sonnet and the sequence. The second section "Themes" consists of six chapters and explores the main theme clusters that can be identified throughout the sequence. Additional features of the book include a guide to preparing a Shakespeare sonnet for interpretation, a model interpretation of a sonnet as well as charts and tables identifying and summarizing the sequence's mini-narratives, groups, addressees and themes. For easy reference, the sonnets discussed in the book are cross-referenced and a detailed index includes key terms and names of works, characters and people. Suggestions for further reading are provided at the end of each chapter and the annotated bibliography includes brief descriptions of the most useful works for further study.
