Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2010 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,0, University of Tubingen, language: English, abstract: In William Shakespeare’s (1564 – 1616) “Sonnet 130”, published 1609 in his book “Shakespeare’s Sonnets”, the speaker talks about his mistress who does not correspond with the ideals of beauty. The speaker compares her with beautiful things, but he cannot find a similarity. But he points out that his love does not depend on how she looks like. This poem is the total opposite of William Shakespeare’s “Sonnet 18” and makes it, and other poems from this century, look ridiculously and superficially.

Book excerpt: Gorgeous, spirited and extravagantly rich, Cora Cash is the closest thing 1890s New York society has to a princess. Her masquerade ball is the prelude to a campaign that will see her mother whisk Cora to Europe, where Mrs Cash wants nothing less than a title for her daughter. In England, impoverished blue-bloods are queueing up for introductions to American heiresses, overlooking the sometimes lowly origins of their fortunes. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2017 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 2,3, University of Wuppertal, language: English, abstract: This paper examines the completely different image of a "mistress" Shakespeare created in Sonnet 130 with the help of a specific rhyme scheme and various types of stylistic devices. His choice of the poetic devices leads the reader to change their perceptions about a perfect and beautiful "mistress". In the earlier ages, many authors in the Elizabethan period followed the tradition of the famous poet Petrarch, who described a "mistress" as an idealized woman, a beauty a lot of women cannot acquire. The description of a "mistress" was in Petrarch's love poems similar. A human being with no blemish was presented to the reader. At the end of the Elizabethan Age, the poems about a "mistress" changed. William Shakespeare, a famous actor and writer, began to write various types of plays and sonnets. In contrast from other authors, Shakespeare switched the gender he wanted to praise. For a long time, the readers at this time were used to reading love poems about a “mistress”. Nevertheless, Shakespeare chose to honour a man than a woman. About 26 sonnets, written by Shakespeare, were about a lady with many different characteristics than it was common at his time.

Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2020 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 2,0, University of Wuppertal, language: English, abstract: This paper examines Sonnet 130 and some further remarkable sonnets from an ecocritical viewpoint putting special emphasis on how he represents the environment in order to gain an insight into Shakespeare’s perspective on Nature and to point out to what extent it is relevant for us. One of Shakespeare’s most popular works among plenty of his plays, comedies and tragedies are his Sonnets. These 154 sonnets mainly focus on the themes of love, beauty and time. But if we examine these poems in more detail, we can notice that Shakespeare uses many words related to the semantic field of Nature in order to highlight its beauty and to compare it with human nature. Moreover, it plays an undeniable role in understanding the content of each sonnet in depth since he refers to different natural phenomena.

This book was released on 2010-04-15 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2010 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,3, University of Erfurt, language: English, abstract: For about thirty years sonnet sequences were popular in England (1580s to the 1610s) . A sonnet is a poem of 14 lines of iambic pentameter with an elaborate rhyme scheme. The poets of these forms of poems wrote in order to express their deep human emotions. Especially, poets in Renaissance revealed the philosophy of humanism. Poets of Elizabethan time are mainly concerned with the subject of love. Thereby, they made use on metaphoric and poetic conventions which were developed by Italian poets of the fourteenth century like Petrarch or Dante. The Petrarchan, or Italian sonnet, consists of two quatrains and two tercets. To emphasize the idea of the poem, the rhyme scheme and structure work together. William Shakespeare reshaped the sonnet structure. The English, or Shakespearean sonnet, consists of three quatrains and a concluding couplet. Shakespeare used, like Petrarch, the structure of the sonnet to explore multiple facets of a topic in short. He, despite his high status as a dramatist, attracted no attention as a sonneteer . William Shakespeare was born in 1564 in Stratford upon Avon. In 1609 he retracted from the London live in theatre back to the city of his birth. In the very same year the publisher Thomas Thorpe announced the book “Shake-Speares Sonnets Never before Imprinted”. “When [Shakespeare] published his sonnets – or allowed them to be published – in 1609, the sonnet vogue was all but over [...]” . About the background and the reliability of this edition prevails disagreement. It is not resolved whether Shakespeare had wanted the publication. It is also uncertain whether the order of the sonnets is right or does it make any sense to rearrange the sequence. Even the division of the sequence into two parts – sonnet one till 126 address a young man and sonnet 127 till 154 address the Dark Lady – is questionable because many of the sonnets have no gender-markers. However, most editors accept the ordering from the 1609 edition . With 154 poems, Shakespeare wrote the longest sonnet cycle of the Elizabethan age. If we comply with the assumption of most editors, the poems one till 126 focuses a young blonde man, and the sonnets 127 till 152 are aimed at a Dark Lady who is the “conceptual antithesis of the young man” . The whole sequence ends with two rather insignificant love sonnets which have nothing to do with the previous sonnets.
