Book excerpt: Excerpt from Songs From the Sandhills An' too much good makes worser still Fer bad that's here an' meant ter grow, Jist like potash fer things we till, Too strong burns up the seeds we sow. J ist like the flow'rs an' stagnant pools, Ter take what's bad the other dies; An' if it weren't fer slime an' fools, There'd be less blooms an' none that's wise. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Songs of the Sand Hills And consequently poetry, in the author, was as the notes of the bird, made long silent by the cheerless aspect of a long winter, until the spring time in life has well nigh stole away, before the effort to produce pro-rhymical verse was made by him. But the desire to put words together in rhyme, as is said in California, would once in a while crop out; until spare time was offered by the author becoming indisposed for a time, and which gave him an opportunity which suggested the chance to put together whatever poetical effusions are herein contained. The author will say, that, whatever style of versification he chanced to commence with, or adopt, such is observed strictly to the end of each particular production; and the rhyme being found more frequent than is general, as correct rhyming tends to lead the mind, he has endeavored that the measure and rhyme should be correct, and that the peculiar style of versification of each particular piece be harmoniously continued the same from beginning to the end of each piece. The wording will be found to be familiar and simple, and running smoothly, so that the mind will not get tripped, or thrown from the thread of narration, by either long or unfamiliar words or untoward irregular measure, after the mind is made up to follow a certain style of measure and verse; and, as these few natural rhymes were produced as a fountain stream which bursts forth in the desert, as an outlet or relief to a bounteous supply, so it is with the author, and if this little beginning is appreciated, there is an abundant supply from whence it came. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Journey to Horseshoe Bend was first published in 1969 and has been out of print for almost forty years. An Australian literary classic, it was written by TGH (Ted) Strehlow, author of the monumental Songs of Central Australia. It describes the final days of his father, Pastor Carl Strehlow, head of the Lutheran mission at Hermannsburg, as they travel, with Aboriginal companions, in extreme heat, along the dry riverbed of the Finke River, to the nearest railhead in search of medical assistance. They never reach help: the journey ends at Horseshoe Bend, with Pastor Strehlow’s death. Ted Strehlow grew up with Aborigines on the mission, and his knowledge of their customs and stories was unique. The book combines this knowledge, with a detailed awareness of the landscape and its sacred places, the battles that have been fought there, the lonely outposts of white settlement, and of the Biblical resonances of their own journey through this desert setting.

Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER • The award-winning, bestselling author of Plainsong returns to the high-plains town of Holt, Colorado, with a novel that unveils the immemorial truths about human beings: their fragility and resilience, their selfishness and goodness, and their ability to find family in one another. • "Storytelling at its best.” —Entertainment Weekly The aging McPheron brothers are learning to live without Victoria Roubideaux, the single mother they took in and who has now left their ranch to start college. A lonely young boy stoically cares for his grandfather while a disabled couple tries to protect their a violent relative. As these lives unfold and intersect, Eventide reveals Kent Haruf as a novelist of masterful authority. “Stunning.... The dry, cold air of Colorado's high plains seems to intensify the light Kent Haruf shines on every character in his masterful novel.... A book of hope, hope as plain and hard-won as Haruf's keenly styled prose.” —O, The Oprah Magazine

Book excerpt: Kent Anderson's stunning debut novel is a modern classic, a harrowing, authentic picture of one American soldier's experience of the Vietnam War--"unlike anything else in war literature" (Los Angeles Review of Books). Hanson joins the Green Berets fresh out of college. Carrying a volume of Yeats's poems in his uniform pocket, he has no idea of what he's about to face in Vietnam--from the enemy, from his fellow soldiers, or within himself. In vivid, nightmarish, and finely etched prose, Kent Anderson takes us through Hanson's two tours of duty and a bitter, ill-fated return to civilian life in-between, capturing the day-to-day process of war like no writer before or since.

Book excerpt: This is Strehlow's most widely regarded work and the culmination of his anthropological work related to the Aranda (Arunta) people of the Alice Springs region. In this work Strehlow records the patrilineal chants or songs of the Aranda people and puts them into a wider context of totemic cultural understanding. Of particular interest is Chapter 10, the love songs of the Aranda people, which pre-date European romantic conventions by several thousand years.
