Book excerpt: There Goes The Bride. . . She's cautious, careful--and about to lose control of her future to a marriage of inconvenience. So, what can reluctant bride Katie McAuley do? Easy--let a modern-day prince charming spirit her away for a month to his Scottish castle. There she can take refuge from her overbearing family and finally figure out what she really wants. But the more Katie sees of Graham McLeod, the harder it's getting to keep their arrangement strictly business. . . As McLeod clan leader, Graham had always placed duty to his heritage and people before everything else. Now with Katie as his "betrothed," he's finally satisfied a ridiculously outdated Marriage Pact to wed a McAuley descendant, letting him focus on more pressing matters, like preventing a ruthless relative's takeover of his home island. If he could just keep Katie's courage and honesty at arm's length, not to mention their all-too-sizzling attraction. . . "Kauffman's characters are both sexy and intelligent." --Romance Junkies "Their Scottish brogues and sexual prowess will tingle your spine and. . .just make you feel good." --Romantic Times on Bad Boys In Kilts "No one does a Scot quite like Ms. Kauffman." --Coffee Time Reviews

Book Synopsis Statistical Inference as Severe Testing by : Deborah G. Mayo
Download or read book Statistical Inference as Severe Testing written by Deborah G. Mayo and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-09-20 with total page 503 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mounting failures of replication in social and biological sciences give a new urgency to critically appraising proposed reforms. This book pulls back the cover on disagreements between experts charged with restoring integrity to science. It denies two pervasive views of the role of probability in inference: to assign degrees of belief, and to control error rates in a long run. If statistical consumers are unaware of assumptions behind rival evidence reforms, they can't scrutinize the consequences that affect them (in personalized medicine, psychology, etc.). The book sets sail with a simple tool: if little has been done to rule out flaws in inferring a claim, then it has not passed a severe test. Many methods advocated by data experts do not stand up to severe scrutiny and are in tension with successful strategies for blocking or accounting for cherry picking and selective reporting. Through a series of excursions and exhibits, the philosophy and history of inductive inference come alive. Philosophical tools are put to work to solve problems about science and pseudoscience, induction and falsification.

Book Synopsis Just Like Jackie by : Lindsey Stoddard
Download or read book Just Like Jackie written by Lindsey Stoddard and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2018-01-02 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Family is family, no matter what it looks like. Readers will cheer for this pitch-perfect story, just right for fans of such books as The Great Gilly Hopkins and Fish in a Tree. For as long as Robinson Hart can remember, it’s just been her and Grandpa. He taught her about cars, baseball, and everything else worth knowing. But Grandpa’s memory has been getting bad—so bad that he sometimes can’t even remember Robbie’s name. She’s sure that she’s making things worse by getting in trouble at school, but she can’t resist using her fists when bullies like Alex Carter make fun of her for not having a mom. Now she’s stuck in group guidance—and to make things even worse, Alex Carter is there too. There’s no way Robbie’s going to open up about her life to some therapy group, especially not with Alex in the room. Besides, if she told anyone how forgetful Grandpa’s been getting lately, they’d take her away from him. He’s the only family she has—and it’s up to her to keep them together, no matter what. Praise for Just Like Jackie: "I was truly moved by this refreshing story about a scrappy young heroine and her struggle to protect her family."—Sara Pennypacker, New York Times bestselling author of Pax “Just Like Jackie is a lovely story of acceptance—about what makes a family and how we make our own families, and about embracing our differences.”—Ann M. Martin, New York Times bestselling author of Rain Reign "A fresh coming-of-age novel as feisty, funny, and forthright as its protagonist. Robinson overcomes obstacles with wit, grit, and a growing compassion for others, showing us that families are what we make them and happiness is found in the simple gifts we take for granted. A rich, rewarding read all around."—John David Anderson, author of Ms. Bixby's Last Day “As close to perfect as a book for middle grade children can get!”—Cammie McGovern, author of Just My Luck ? "Stoddard debuts with a quiet but powerful narrative that gently unpacks Alzheimer’s, centers mental health, and moves through the intimate and intense emotional landscape of family—what seems to break one and what can remake it. Validating, heart-rending, and a deft blend of suffering and inspiration."—Kirkus Reviews (starred review) “A home-run story that will resonate with all who feel they might not fit into the perfect definition of a family.”—School Library Journal “Debut author Stoddard crafts a winning narrator in Robinson. A beautiful story about the true meaning of family, perfect for fans of Lynda Mullaly Hunt.”—Booklist

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the amazing strides made in information technology, communication processes are predominantly initiated and managed by humans for humans. This underscores the idea that it is the target of the process that is the center of all communication activities. The process fundamentally involves seeking answers to the cardinal questions of what to communicate, how to communicate it, when to do so and why. Many books and manuals have attempted to address some of these questions but not much attention has been directed at a systematic analysis of audiences before, during and after communication encounters. Many books also do not address audience classification, universals of audiences, special types of audiences and levels of audience analysis. This book addresses this and suggests that in order to do a good job in this part, it is necessary to view communication as skilled behavior, in view of this, the author has suggested some reflective activities at the and of each section. It is hoped that this activities generate more questions, debate and shit more attention to audiences as centers of all communication. There is a preface to the book outlining the importance of analyzing audiences. Chapter one looks at the generic aspects of audiences: categories of audiences, index of similarity /sameness, conception of effective communication, universal properties of audiences, special types of audiences and message classification. Chapter two addresses pertinent questions in audience analysis and chapter three looks at the levels of audience analysis. At the end of the book, the author has provided a list of terms as used in the text. The book is intended to meet the needs of diverse professionals in that all communicators have to deals with audiences on a day-to-day basis. The section on special audiences recognizes the fact that although there are many common factors in audiences, there are some special audiences whose features may call upon communicators to look more into the circumstances.

Book Synopsis Sisters of the Extreme by : Cynthia Palmer
Download or read book Sisters of the Extreme written by Cynthia Palmer and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2000-05-01 with total page 535 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: • An anthology of writings by some of the most influential women in history on the often misunderstood and misrepresented female drug experience. • With great honesty, bravery, and frankness, women from diverse backgrounds write about their drug experiences. Women have been experimenting with drugs since prehistoric times, and yet published accounts of their views on the drug experience have been relegated to either antiseptic sociological studies or sensationalized stories splashed across the tabloids. The media has given us an enduring, but inaccurate, stereotype of a female drug user: passive, addicted, exploited, degraded, promiscuous. But the selections in this anthology--penned by such famous names as Billie Holiday, Anais Nin, Maya Angelou, and Carrie Fisher--show us that the real experiences of women are anything but stereotypical. Sisters of the Extreme provides us with writings by women from diverse occupations and backgrounds, from prostitute to physician, who through their use of drugs dared cross the boundaries set by society--often doing so with the hope of expanding themselves and their vision of the world. Whether with LSD, peyote, cocaine, heroine, MDMA, or marijuana, these women have sought to reach, through their experimentation, other levels of consciousness. Sometimes their quests have brought unexpected rewards, other times great suffering and misfortune. But wherever their trips have left them, these women have lived courageously--if sometimes dangerously--and written about their journeys eloquently.
Book Synopsis How to Find Mr. Right by : Kerry Gardette
Download or read book How to Find Mr. Right written by Kerry Gardette and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2011-05-25 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was created to assist women who want to meet men but are reluctant to approach them because of social barriers. Many women think it is not lady-like to approach men. Or that there is an imaginary line women should not cross because men should introduce themselves. How many times have you seen a man you thought was attractive and would like to meet? Perhaps he did not notice you or was distracted at the time you noticed him. So, the opportunity just passed without any eye contact or conversation. It became just another missed opportunity to meet Mr. Right. I have created a way for you to meet men in a fun, very unassuming way. I call it "the game". It is designed for you to meet men and ask questions. "The game" is a method to eliminate ineligible men so that the last man standing is Mr. Right.
Book Synopsis Extreme Exoticism by : W. Anthony Sheppard
Download or read book Extreme Exoticism written by W. Anthony Sheppard and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-09-20 with total page 641 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To what extent can music be employed to shape one culture's understanding of another? In the American imagination, Japan has represented the "most alien" nation for over 150 years. This perceived difference has inspired fantasies--of both desire and repulsion--through which Japanese culture has profoundly impacted the arts and industry of the U.S. While the influence of Japan on American and European painting, architecture, design, theater, and literature has been celebrated in numerous books and exhibitions, the role of music has been virtually ignored until now. W. Anthony Sheppard's Extreme Exoticism offers a detailed documentation and wide-ranging investigation of music's role in shaping American perceptions of the Japanese, the influence of Japanese music on American composers, and the place of Japanese Americans in American musical life. Presenting numerous American encounters with and representations of Japanese music and Japan, this book reveals how music functions in exotic representation across a variety of genres and media, and how Japanese music has at various times served as a sign of modernist experimentation, a sounding board for defining American music, and a tool for reshaping conceptions of race and gender. From the Tin Pan Alley songs of the Russo-Japanese war period to Weezer's Pinkerton album, music has continued to inscribe Japan as the land of extreme exoticism.
