Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The index-number problem is typically a problem of aggregation of changes in heterogeneous elements. Mathematically, it consists in reducing the relative change of the elements of a vector into changes in one single numerical value, a scalar. The purpose of this paper is to present a solution of the index number problem in the perspective of the theoretical developments occurred during the last century. It represents a further step forward with respect to Afriat's (1981)(2005) method used in Afriat and Milana (2009) with the definition of appropriate consistent tight bounds of the quot;truequot; index number.

Book excerpt: By enabling the storage and transfer of purchasing power, money facilitates economic transactions and coordinates economic activity. But what is money? How is it generated? Distributed? How does money acquire value and that value change? How does money impact the economy, society? This book explores money as a system of "tokens" that represent the purchasing power of individual agents. It looks at how money developed from debt/credit relationships, barter and coins into a system of gold-backed currencies and bank credit and on to the present system of fiat money, bank credit, near-money and, more recently, digital currencies. The author successively examines how the money circuit has changed over the last 50 years, a period of stagnant wages, increased household borrowing and growing economic complexity, and argues for a new theory of economies as complex systems, coordinated by a banking and financial system. Money: What It Is, How It’s Created, Who Gets It and Why It Matters will be of interest to students of economics and finance theory and anyone wanting a more complete understanding of monetary theory, economics, money and banking.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Making of Index Numbers: A Study of Their Varieties, Tests, and Reliability In order to help resolve the questions remaining at issue, a large number of calculations have been made for this book in addition to the large number which had already been made. Any one who has not himself attempted a like task can scarcely realize the amount of time, labor, and expense involved. Some of the work must have been abandoned had not the Pollak Foundation for Economic Research come to the rescue. The result has been a much more complete survey of possible formula than any hitherto attempted. Although, in a subject like this, absolute completeness is out of the question, since the number of possible formula is infinite, nevertheless, the whole field has been so mapped out as to leave no large gaps. The aim has been to settle decisively, if possible, the questions of how widely the various results reached by different possible methods diverge from each other, and why. Each of more than a hundred formula has been examined and calculated in four series. Each of these series has its mile to play in this study, even formula which are found, in the end, to have no practical use. Book excerpt: 'An authoritative survey with exciting new insights of special interest to economists and econometricians who analyse intertemporal and interspatial price relationships.' - Professor Angus Maddison, Groningen University This book presents a comprehensive review of recent developments in the theory and construction of index numbers using the stochastic approach, demonstrating the versatility of this approach in handling various index number problems within a single conceptual framework. It also contains a brief, but complete, review of the existing approaches to index numbers with illustrative numerical examples. The stochastic approach considers the index number problem as a signal extraction problem. The strength and reliability of the signal extracted from price and quantity changes for different commodities depends upon the messages received and the information content of the messages. The most important applications of the new approach are to be found in the context of measuring rate of inflation; fixed and chain base index numbers for temporal comparisons and for spatial intercountry comparisons; the latter generally require special index number formulae that result in transitive and base invariant comparisons.

Book excerpt: The consumer price index (CPI) measures the rate at which prices of consumer goods and services change over time. It is used as a key indicator of economic performance, as well as in the setting of monetary and socio-economic policy such as indexation of wages and social security benefits, purchasing power parities and inflation measures. This manual contains methodological guidelines for statistical offices and other agencies responsible for constructing and calculating CPIs, and also examines underlying economic and statistical concepts involved. Topics covered include: expenditure weights, sampling, price collection, quality adjustment, sampling, price indices calculations, errors and bias, organisation and management, dissemination, index number theory, durables and user costs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, there have been a number of new developments in what came to be known as the "Capital Theory Debates". The debates took place mainly during the 1960s as a result of Piero Sraffa's critique of the neoclassical theory according to which the prices of factors of production directly depend on their relative scarcities. Sraffa showed that when income distribution changes, there are many complexities developed within the economic system impacting on prices in ways which are not possible to predict. These debates were revisited in the 1980s and again more recently, along with a parallel literature that has developed among neoclassical economists and has also looked at the impact of shocks on an economy. This book summarizes the debates and issues around the theory of capital and brings to the fore the more recent developments. It also pinpoints the similarities and differences between the various approaches and critically evaluates them in light of available empirical evidence. The focus of the book is on the price trajectories induced by changes in income distribution and the resulting shape of the wage rates of profit curves and frontier. These issues are central to areas such as microeconomics, international trade, growth, technological change and macro stability analysis. Each chapter starts with the theoretical issues involved, followed by their formalization and subsequently with their operationalization. More specifically, the variables of the classical theory of value and distribution are rigorously defined and quantified using actual input–output data from a number of major economies, but mainly from the USA, over long stretches of time. The empirical results are not only consistent with the anticipations of the theory but also further inform and therefore strengthen its predictive content raising new significant questions.
