Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Polymers have achieved an enviable position as the class of materials having the highest volume of production, exceeding that of both metals and ceramics. The meteoric rise in the production and utilization of polymers has been due to advances in polymer synthesis which allow the creation of specific and well-defined molecular structures, to new knowledge concerning the relationships between polymer structure and properties, and to an improved understanding of how processing can be used as a tool to develop morphological features which result in desired properties. Polymers have truly become 'engineered materials' in every sense of the term. Polymer scientists and engineers are forever seeking to modify and improve the properties of synthetic polymeric systems for use in specific applications. Towards this end they have often looked to nature for advice on how to design molecules for specific needs. An excellent illustration of this is the use of noncovalent bonding (ionic, hydrogen, and van der Waals) in lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids, where these noncovalent bonds, acting both intra and intermolecularly, precisely control the structure and thus the function of the entire system. The utilization of ionic bonding, in particular in man-made polymers has attracted widespread interest in recent years, since ionic interactions exert a similar strong influence on the structure and properties of these synthetic systems.

Book excerpt: This book is a comprehensive study of the subject of ionic interactions in macromolecules. The first parts of the book review and analyze the conventional treatments of fixed charges (e.g. in polyelectrolytes and polyampholytes), including screening and condensation by mobile ions. The interaction of ions with less polar sites on the macromolecule (e.g. amide bonds), and the origin of the lyotropic effects (focusing on binding versus condensation) will also be extensively addressed. The book also explores complex micellar organizations involving charged macromolecules (e.g. DNA) and low-molecular-weight ampholytes and strong protein associations. The resulting structures are relevant to a variety of functional biological systems and synthetic analogs. The contribution of electrostatic and hydrophobic interaction to the stability of proteins and other supramolecular structures will also be analyzed. There are chapters on applications such as deionization and cosmetic formulation. This 21-chapter book is divided into three sections: Fundamentals Mixed Interactions Functions and Applications

This book was released on 2002 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This proceedings volume is a compilation of papers from three symposia held at the 2001 MRS Fall Meeting in Boston. Historically, some of the most outstanding breakthroughs in the biological sciences have stemmed from the application of physical characterization techniques to the examination of biological materials and systems. Excellent examples include the application of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to the examination of human tissues and the use of X-ray diffraction to determine the structure of DNA. Symposium FF, Physical Characterization of Biological Materials and Systems, draws together researchers from a diverse range of disciplines that are applying physical characterization techniques to the study of biological materials and systems. The past decade has also seen an explosion in novel polymer synthetic and processing routes that allow control of tissue engineering scaffolds at the micro-, nano-, and even molecular levels. These advanced techniques are enabling tissue engineers to synthesize scaffolds and templates that intimately regulate cell behavior. Researchers from Symposium GG, Polymeric Biomaterials for Tissue Engineering, come together here to identify and elaborate upon the unifying themes in polymeric synthesis, processing and characterization as specifically applied to tissue engineering research. In Symposium HH, Bioinspired Materials--Moving Towards Complexity, chemists, physicists, biologists and engineers join together to discuss the interdisciplinary development of synthetic materials based on concepts for materials design found in nature. Their potential for biomedical applications, electronics, catalysis, separation technology and adhesion areaddressed.
