An often used method to determine that burning rate function is to burn a sample of the propellant in a closed container and to register the corresponding pressure-time data. With the aid of formulas from thermodynamic theory these observations can be manipulated to yield the desired parameters of the burning rate function. This analysis is typically done under a number of restrictive assumptions, e.g., the assumption of constant temperature in the container throughout the experiment. In spite of such assumptions the corresponding algorithms published are complicated and an error analysis of the results has apparently never been reported. In the present paper new formulas are derived under relaxed assumptions. With the aid of these formulas the data analysis is reduced to a curve fitting task. For such tasks standard theories and computer programs are available, which furnish the unknown parameters of the burning rate function together with estimates of their variances and co-variances. The new formulas can be replaced by simpler ones under conditions, which are controllable by the design of the experiment. It is found that for such simplifications the temperature's behavior is not relevant. In general the simplifications are permissible if the maximum pressure achieved during the experiment remains essentially smaller than the chemical energy released per unit volume of the propellant. The latter is typically of the order of 10 to 10th power Pa (10 to 5th power). An example illustrates the application of the new algorithm.

The relative merits of the available instrumentation are discussed; the principles and limitation of the interferometry technique are treated in detail. Preliminary r-P data for a polybutadiene-acrylic acid composite propellant are reported up to 60,000 psi; results at higher pressures are indeterminate, owing to leakage and lack of high-pressure dynamic calibration equipment. It is not clear that this is a valid representation in a highly transient pressure environment. To estimate possible dynamic effects, numerical solutions for three thermal-wave combustion models (KTSS, Levine/Culick, Kooker/Zinn) are obtained for a series of example cases where the imposed pressure variation at the edge of the flame zone is prescribed by an experimental pressure-time history from the 105mm Gun M68. The results obtained with several different numerical solution methods indicate that (1) at low pressure (early time) the instantaneous propellant burning rate can be much greater than ap to the n power; while at high pressure the burning rate returns asymptotically to ap to the n power, and (2) burning rate 'runaway' is a numerical difficulty and is not a solution to the combustion models. The effect of dynamic burning rate on closed-bomb measurements is estimated numerically with a simple model.

Book excerpt: An experimental investigation of the combustion characteristics of a Hivelite-based, very-high-burn-rate (VHBR) propellant was conducted. The experiments were performed in a closed chamber, called the VHBR bomb, that was specially designed and constructed for these experiments. The device was designed with the same diameter as the propellant samples in order to maintain one dimensional combustion processes and transient wave phenomena to simplify subsequent interpretation and analysis. Propellant combustion was characterized by a low burn rate (about 1 m/s) until a pressure in the vicinity of 15-20 MPa is reached. After this pressure, which may represent the propellant crushing or break pressure, the combustion rate accelerated to levels from 10 to 180 m/s, depending on other test parameters. Tests conducted at different loading densities indicated that combustion rate was a strong function of pressure. Variation of sample weight at constant loading density demonstrated that increasing the amount of unburned propellant at the time the break pressure was reached also causes burn rate and thrust to increase. A coating that makes the outside surface of the sample slippery tended to reduce the apparent burn rate but use of a coating which retarded transmission of gas pressure along the periphery of the sample increased the apparent burn rate as well as thrust. Change of mounting interface properties caused significant differences in the dynamic characteristics leading to increased thrust.

This WG was formed in 1996, consisting of active representatives from 6 of the 15 member nations of NATO, with inputs accepted from 4 other member nations and a couple non-member nations. The NATO RTO/AVT WG 016 sought to contribute to improvements in the burning rate tools to address issues that have plagued the solid propulsion industry for over 40 years. This paper reviews the final results of this study by summarizing the objectives, approach, findings, and recommendations of this working group based on activity from October 1997 to March 2001. Recommendations are reviewed on direct and non-intrusive burning rate measurement methods, data analysis, and performance scaling to support improved prediction of internal ballistics of a full-scale solid propellant motor. AVT WG 016 activities have identified that manufacturer burning rate data may not easily be compared without accounting for industry-wide differences in subscale devices, test methods and scaling analysis methods. The WG recommends the NATO propulsion community review these findings as a means of advancing their own burning rate measurement and analysis methods.

A microwave signal oscillating at a known source frequency is passed through the end of a burning propellant strand opposite the burning surface and allowed to reflect off the burning surface. By continuously comparing the phase angle of this reflected signal with the phase angle of another signal oscillating at the orginal source frequency, a relative phase angle of another signal oscillating at the original source frequency, a relative phase angle between the two signals is obtained. The rate of change of this relative phase angle with time is proportional to the propellant's burning rate. Possible errors were investigated and conclusions reached concerning them. (Author).

The study involved both the closed bomb and high pressure strand burner techniques. Identical propellant formulations were distributed to the participants, burned, and the data converted to burning rates using methods prevailing at each installation. In some cases closed bomb as well as strand burner results showed excellent agreement (to + or - 2.5 percent on the average and to within + or - 1 percent mid-range). In less favorable cases closed bomb burning rates from different installations exhibited two or three times as much scatter. In one case there were significant differences between closed bomb and strand burner data. For the closed bomb data, variations could be linked to experimental factors such as loading density, sample quickness, and ignition parameters, as well as post-acquisition data manipulation techniques such as smoothing and differentiation.
