Book excerpt: POWER CONVERTERS, DRIVES AND CONTROLS FOR SUSTAINABLE OPERATIONS Written and edited by a group of experts in the field, this groundbreaking reference work sets the standard for engineers, students, and professionals working with power converters, drives, and controls, offering the scientific community a way towards combating sustainable operations. The future of energy and power generation is complex. Demand is increasing, and the demand for cleaner energy and electric vehicles (EVs) is increasing with it. With this increase in demand comes an increase in the demand for power converters. Part one of this book is on switched-mode converters and deals with the need for power converters, their topologies, principles of operation, their steady-state performance, and applications. Conventional topologies like buck, boost, buck-boost converters, inverters, multilevel inverters, and derived topologies are covered in part one with their applications in fuel cells, photovoltaics (PVs), and EVs. Part two is concerned with electrical machines and converters used for EV applications. Standards for EV, charging infrastructure, and wireless charging methodologies are addressed. The last part deals with the dynamic model of the switched-mode converters. In any DC-DC converter, it is imperative to control the output voltage as desired. Such a control may be achieved in a variety of ways. While several types of control strategies are being evolved, the popular method of control is through the duty cycle of the switch at a constant switching frequency. This part of the book briefly reviews the conventional control theory and builds on the same to develop advanced techniques in the closed-loop control of switch mode power converters (SMPC), such as sliding mode control, passivity-based control, model predictive control (MPC), fuzzy logic control (FLC), and backstepping control. A standard reference work for veteran engineers, scientists, and technicians, this outstanding new volume is also a valuable introduction to new hires and students. Useful to academics, researchers, engineers, students, technicians, and other industry professionals, it is a must-have for any library.

This book was released on 2022-11-05 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents novel contributions in the development of solid-state-transformer (SST) technology both for medium-voltage (MV) and low-voltage (LV) utility grid interfaces, which can potentially augment the grid modernization process in the evolving power system paradigm. For the MV interface, a single-stage AC-DC SST submodule topology has been proposed, and its modulation and soft-switching possibilities are analysed, experimentally validated and adequately benchmarked. A control scheme with power balance capability among submodules is developed for MV grid-connected single-stage AC-DC SST for smooth operation under inevitable parameter drift scenario, and experimental validation shows excellent performance under drastic load change conditions. A novel machine learning-aided multi-objective design optimization framework for grid-connected SST is developed and experimentally validated, which equips a power electronics design engineer with meagre computational resources to find out the most optimal SST design in a convenient time-frame. This book has also contributed towards the development of dual-active-bridge (DAB)-type and non-DAB-type LV grid-interfaced isolated AC-DC converters by providing solutions to specific topology and modulation-related shortcomings in these two types of topologies. A comprehensive comparison of the DAB and non-DAB-type LVAC-LVDC converters reveals the superiority of DAB-type conversion strategy.

In light of climate change non-fossil paths to supply it are necessary. Carbon monoxide is a key molecule for carbon utilization. Forming it into hydrocarbons is an established process. Gliding arc plasma sources can produce it by ‚warm‘ plasma, which has high reactivity and space-time yield at low energy input. The first part of this work deals with the construction and characterization of two gliding arc plasma sources and driver circuits. In the second part, they are used to split CO₂ into carbon monoxide and oxygen in a coaxial reactor utilizing a ceramic quench. Two new plasma processes are presented in the third part as less energy intensive alternatives: The calcination of a carbonates and simultaneous splitting of CO₂ by plasma as well as the gasification of organic solid waste coupled to reforming to syngas. In the fourth part, the processes are evaluated economically for a simplified example syngas-to-methanol plant.

It also proposes both AC-DC and DC-DC types of converters for different electrical loads to improve the performance these systems. To increase fuel efficiency and reduce environmental impacts, less efficient non-electrical aircraft systems are being replaced by electrical systems. However, more electrical systems requires more electrical power to be generated in the aircraft. The increased consumption of electrical power in both civil and military aircrafts has necessitated the use of more efficient electrical power conversion technologies. This book presents acomprehensive mathematical analysis and the design and digital simulation of the power converters. Subsequently it discusses the construction of the hardware prototypes of each converter and the experimental tests carried out to verify the benefits of the proposed solutions in comparison to the existing solutions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive look at DC-DC converters and advanced power converter topologies for all skills levels As it can be rare for source voltage to meet the requirements of a Direct Current (DC) load, DC-DC converters are essential to access service. DC-DC power converters employ power semiconductor devices (like MOSFETs and IGBTs) as switches and passive elements such as capacitors, inductors, and transformers to alter the voltage provided by a DC source into the necessary DC voltage as is required by a DC load. This source can be a battery, solar panels, fuel cells, or a DC bus voltage fed by rectified AC utility voltage. As the many components of DC-DC converters can be differently arranged into circuit structures called topologies, there are as many possible circuit topologies as there are possible combinations of circuit elements. Focusing on DC-DC switch-mode power converters ranging from 50 W to 10kW, DC-DC Converter Topologies provides a survey of all converter topology types within this power range. General principles are described for each topology type using a representative converter as an example. Variations that can be found that differ from the example are then examined, with a helpful discussion of comparisons when relevant. A broad range of topics is covered within the book, from simple, low-power converters to complex, high-power converters and everywhere in between. DC-DC Converter Topologies readers will also find: A detailed discussion of four key DC-DC converter topologies Description of isolated two-switch pulse-width modulated (PWM) topologies including push-pull, half-bridge, and interleaved converters An exploration of high-gain converters such as coupled inductors, voltage multipliers, and switched capacitor converters This book provides the tools so that a non-expert will be equipped to deal with the vast array of DC-DC converters that presently exist. As such, DC-DC Converter Topologies is a useful reference for electrical engineers, professors, and graduate students studying in the field.

Book excerpt: Photovoltaic (PV) energy generation is an excellent example of large-scale electric power generation through various parallel arrangements of small voltage-generating solar cells or modules. However, PV generation systems require power electronic converters system to satisfy the need for real-time applications or to balance the demand for power from electric. Therefore, a DC-DC power converter is a vital constituent in the intermediate conversion stage of PV power. This book presents a comprehensive review of various non-isolated DC-DC power converters. Non-isolated DC-DC converters for renewable energy system (RES) application presented in this book 1st edition through a detailed original investigation, obtained numerical/experimental results, and guided the scope to design new families of converters: DC-DC multistage power converter topologies, Multistage "X-Y converter family", Nx IMBC (Nx Interleaved Multilevel Boost Converter), Cockcroft Walton (CW) Voltage Multiplier-Based Multistage/Multilevel Power Converter (CW-VM-MPC) converter topologies, and Z-source and quasi Z-source. Above solutions are discussed to show how they can achieve the maximum voltage conversion gain ratio by adapting the passive/active component within the circuits. For assessment, we have recommended novel power converters through their functionality and designs, tested and verified by numerical software. Further, the hardware prototype implementation is carried out through a flexible digital processor. Both numerical and experimental results always shown as expected close agreement with primary theoretical hypotheses. This book offers guidelines and recommendation for future development with the DC-DC converters for RES applications based on cost-effective, and reliable solutions.
