Book excerpt: Excerpt from Social Development and Education In Part I of this volume, I have attempted first to describe the typical attitudes which the child tends to assume toward the persons with whom he comes into contact in the ordinary situations of daily life, and to explain these attitudes in view of certain fundamental principles of mental development. To this end I have presented the results of observations of children's reactions under a variety of social conditions, the aim being to detect if possible the "natural" or impulsive tendencies in their responses. Then, in the second place, it has been my purpose to trace the changes in the child's adjustments to people which seem normally to occur in the process of development. This has required a mode of procedure in which the individual is followed from infancy to maturity along the several routes which lead to efficiency in social adaptation; and the ever-present question has been whether the child would on his own initiative follow these routes, or whether if left to himself he would stop on the way, or turn off in other directions. It has been my constant effort to note the actual tendencies of the child at different stages in his evolution, without regard to prevailing popular or theoretical conceptions of what he is or what he ought to be or to do. I have undertaken in Part II certain phases of the difficult and interminable task of outlining a plan and method of education designed to make the individual socially efficient. My point of view might properly, I think, be said to be that of the naturalist rather than that of the logician or philosopher, or even the moralist or idealist. A stone when struck resists. If its resistance is greater than the force of the blow struck, it remains outwardly unchanged. Otherwise, it is shattered into smaller bits. Never does the stone attempt to react in such a way that it may maintain itself against the blow, much less so as to render the blow a contributing factor to its own continued action. While the living thing may easily be crushed by superior force, it none the less tries to turn the energies which act upon it into means of its own further existence. If it cannot do so, it does not just split into smaller pieces (at least in the higher forms of life), but loses its identity as a living thing. As long as it endures, it struggles to use surrounding energies in its own behalf. It uses light, air, moisture, and the material of soil. To say that it uses them is to say that it turns them into means of its own conservation. As long as it is growing, the energy it expends in thus turning the environment to account is more than compensated for by the return it gets: it grows. Understanding the word "control" in this sense, it may be said that a living being is one that subjugates and controls for its own continued activity the energies that would otherwise use it up. Life is a self-renewing process through action upon the environment.

The process of group development, like that of individual development, may be divided into natural or genetic, and artificial or telic evolution. The natural evolution of the social group, so far as it is progressive, has resulted from the operation of external causes, or from the activities of the members of the group undirected towards a social end. Natural social evolution is a resultant of the reactions of the group upon its environment, and the activities of its members directed towards the satisfaction of their desires without thought of the effect of these activities upon social develop ment. It is wholly unintended. Looking back at the his torical development of society, for instance, we can see that social progress has sometimes been achieved without its being aimed at by anybody. This phase of the development of a social group corresponds exactly to the natural development of the biological organism. It is the education which Nature gives to the social group thru its unconscious experience with its obj ective'and subjective environment. The truth of such criticisms was brought out forcibly by a recent study which showed that, of the dozen most commonly used textbooks, only three gave as much as twenty-five per cent of their space to the developments of the past fifty years; that most of them devoted the great bulk of their space to ancient and mediaeval educa tion and European development; that most of them were cyclopaedic in character, and seemed constructed on the old fact-theory-of-knowledge basis; that only two or three attempted to relate the history they presented to present day problems in instruction; that only one made any real connection between the study of the history of education and the institutional efforts of the State in the matter of training; and that practically none treated the history of education in the light of either the recent important ad vances in educational practice and procedure or the great social, political, and industrial changes which have given the recent marked expansion of state educational effort its entire meaning.
