Book excerpt: Excerpt from Social Development and Education In Part I of this volume, I have attempted first to describe the typical attitudes which the child tends to assume toward the persons with whom he comes into contact in the ordinary situations of daily life, and to explain these attitudes in view of certain fundamental principles of mental development. To this end I have presented the results of observations of children's reactions under a variety of social conditions, the aim being to detect if possible the "natural" or impulsive tendencies in their responses. Then, in the second place, it has been my purpose to trace the changes in the child's adjustments to people which seem normally to occur in the process of development. This has required a mode of procedure in which the individual is followed from infancy to maturity along the several routes which lead to efficiency in social adaptation; and the ever-present question has been whether the child would on his own initiative follow these routes, or whether if left to himself he would stop on the way, or turn off in other directions. It has been my constant effort to note the actual tendencies of the child at different stages in his evolution, without regard to prevailing popular or theoretical conceptions of what he is or what he ought to be or to do. I have undertaken in Part II certain phases of the difficult and interminable task of outlining a plan and method of education designed to make the individual socially efficient. My point of view might properly, I think, be said to be that of the naturalist rather than that of the logician or philosopher, or even the moralist or idealist. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mental Development and Education In writing this volume the author has had constantly in mind the interests and needs of teachers in service and also persons who are preparing to teach. Consequently those aspects only of mental development and of education which directly concern those who train the young have received attention; all strictly technical and speculative discussion has been avoided. No attempt has been made to treat comprehensively the psychology of childhood and youth or educational values and methods. Two questions have guided the discussion throughout; - first, How does the individual normally respond at different periods in his development to the typical situations, physical, intellectual, aesthetic and social, in which he is placed; and second, How can he best appropriate the materials and benefits of education so that he can utilize them to greatest advantage in daily life? The point of view is that afforded by present-day biological psychology. For those who may not at first glance see just what this point of view is, it may be said that one who regards human nature from the standpoint of biological psychology seeks to explain the behavior of a child or a youth on the basis of natural laws governing the development of his body, his intellect and his character. It is seen that the individual is at birth equipped with tendencies which represent some of the activities which have proved of service in the life of his ancestors, and these tendencies are manifested in varying degrees and forms in the course of development from birth to maturity. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: . Renewal of Life by Transmission. The most notable distinction between living and inanimate things is that the former maintain themselves by renewal. A stone when struck resists. If its resistance is greater than the force of the blow struck, it remains outwardly unchanged. Otherwise, it is shattered into smaller bits. Never does the stone attempt to react in such a way that it may maintain itself against the blow, much less so as to render the blow a contributing factor to its own continued action. While the living thing may easily be crushed by superior force, it none the less tries to turn the energies which act upon it into means of its own further existence. If it cannot do so, it does not just split into smaller pieces (at least in the higher forms of life), but loses its identity as a living thing. As long as it endures, it struggles to use surrounding energies in its own behalf. It uses light, air, moisture, and the material of soil. To say that it uses them is to say that it turns them into means of its own conservation. As long as it is growing, the energy it expends in thus turning the environment to account is more than compensated for by the return it gets: it grows. Understanding the word "control" in this sense, it may be said that a living being is one that subjugates and controls for its own continued activity the energies that would otherwise use it up. Life is a self-renewing process through action upon the environment.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Education and Social Progress Holding in mind, then, the conception of a developing social group, we may describe the social evolutionary process which results primarily in the education of the social group, in the same manner that was employed in outlining the development of the individual. The process of group development, like that of individual development, may be divided into natural or genetic, and artificial or telic evolution. The natural evolution of the social group, so far as it is progressive, has resulted from the operation of external causes, or from the activities of the members of the group undirected towards a social end. Natural social evolution is a resultant of the reactions of the group upon its environment, and the activities of its members directed towards the satisfaction of their desires without thought of the effect of these activities upon social develop ment. It is wholly unintended. Looking back at the his torical development of society, for instance, we can see that social progress has sometimes been achieved without its being aimed at by anybody. This phase of the development of a social group corresponds exactly to the natural development of the biological organism. It is the education which Nature gives to the social group thru its unconscious experience with its obj ective'and subjective environment. Fathers and mothers are anxious to understand the aims and methods of the school; they are also interested to know how other educa tional forces in the community may be utilized in such a manner as to insure the best growth and development of their children. It enables the individual to participate through trade and commerce in the productions of every clime, and to share likewise in the wisdom collected by all mankind in all times and places. This principle has taken care of the well-being of the individual in the church, the State, the social community, the school. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Public Education in the United States: A Study and Interpretation of American Educational History, an Introductory d104book Dealing With the Larger Problems of Present-Day, Education in the Light of Their Historical Development The history of education as an introductory subject for students in normal schools and colleges has recently re ceived much criticism, largely because it has, as usually written and taught, had so little relation to present-day problems in education, and because it has failed to func tion, to use a common expression, in orienting the prospec tive teacher. The truth of such criticisms was brought out forcibly by a recent study which showed that, of the dozen most commonly used textbooks, only three gave as much as twenty-five per cent of their space to the developments of the past fifty years; that most of them devoted the great bulk of their space to ancient and mediaeval educa tion and European development; that most of them were cyclopaedic in character, and seemed constructed on the old fact-theory-of-knowledge basis; that only two or three attempted to relate the history they presented to present day problems in instruction; that only one made any real connection between the study of the history of education and the institutional efforts of the State in the matter of training; and that practically none treated the history of education in the light of either the recent important ad vances in educational practice and procedure or the great social, political, and industrial changes which have given the recent marked expansion of state educational effort its entire meaning. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Guide Book for Teachers of Family Life Education Family life is a basic social unit which we wish to maintain and strengthen. It is basic because it has almost all the control Of the child's early development. It continues its influence on the child's development throughout his contacts with church, school and community. It forms a needed emotional tie for human beings. It is the unit for providing food, shelter, clothing and early education. Family life is facing increasing difficulties in getting along. Standards for necessities have been raised. People want more things and more experiences. There are more ways to spend money, more things to buy, more available services if you can pay for them. There are more forces that tend to compete with or break down family life. The family has fewer ties that hold it together. The economic tie is much weaker. Women are less dependent on men for their support and men are less dependent on women for their services in the home. The law, the church and public Opinion are less strict about divorce. Other agencies offer services formerly performed by the family such as health services, making clothes, canning, and growing foods. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Education of the American Citizen IN many of the political writings of the day, there is a tendency to lay too much stress on the mechanism of government and of industry, and too little stress on the force by which this mechanism is kept at work. In recent educational movements, also, too much thought is perhaps given to the problem of preparing men and women to take their several places in a social machine, and too little to the development of that power and spirit upon which the perpetuation of our whole social order depends. From my public addresses and magazine articles of the past few years, I have tried to select those which emphasize the more neglected side of these questions, and to arrange them in a continuous series. In a book thus prepared, it is inevitable that there should be some repe tition and some apparent inconsistencies. If the reader is perplexed by any of these things, he will perhaps find the explanation in the date of the different utterances and the special conditions under which they were made public.
