Book excerpt: Writer Tami Lewis Brown and illustrator Keith Negley present a joyful picture book biography of modern art icon Keith Haring, celebrating the ways his life embodied the message: art is for everyone. Art is life... and life is art. Keith Haring believed that art should be enjoyed by everyone. When Keith first moved to New York City, he rode the subway and noticed how the crowds were bored and brusque, and that the subways were decayed and dreary. He thought the people of New York needed liberating, illuminating, and radiating art. So he bought a stick of white chalk and started drawing...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Click. Whir. Buzz. Not so long ago, math problems had to be solved with pencil and paper, mail delivered by postman, and files were stored in paper folders and metal cabinets. But three women, Betty Snyder, Jean Jennings, and Kay McNulty knew there could be a better way. During World War II, people hoped ENIAC (Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer), one of the earliest computers, could help with the war effort. With little guidance, no instructions, and barely any access to the machine itself, Betty, Jean, and Kay used mathematics, electrical engineering, logic, and common sense to command a computer as large as a room and create the modern world. The machine was like Betty, requiring outside-the-box thinking, like Jean, persistent and consistent, and like Kay, no mistakes, every answer perfect. Today computers are all around us, performing every conceivable task, thanks, in large part, to Betty, Jean, and Kay's pioneering work. Instructions Not Included is their story. This fascinating chapter in history is brought to life with vivid prose by Tami Lewis Brown and Debbie Loren Dunn and with striking illustrations by Chelsea Beck. Detailed back matter including historical photos provides a closer look.

Perkin, a pioneer of the modern scientific method, made numerous advances possible, including canned food and chemotherapy. But it was his creation of purple that started it all. This book is a joyous celebration of Perkin's impactful purple.--

I highly recommend it” (Heather Graham, New York Times–bestselling author of Come the Morning). When Elinor Ashton’s father forces her into a loveless marriage to satisfy his debts, she becomes the unhappiest bride in London society . . . and the property of Lord Kingsley, an elderly and enormously wealthy man whose jealousy leads him to concoct an unspeakable scheme. Lucien de Clare is England’s most handsome—and most brazen—lord, a man whose scandalous behavior made the doors to polite society close against him. This makes him the perfect pawn in Kingsley’s despicable plot to secure an heir. But the attempt at a deceitful seduction of Elinor leads to true desire, as Lucien is overcome by her beauty and charm. Neither treacherous intrigue nor vengeful deeds can temper their desire for forbidden kisses, or dampen the fire that fuels their love . . . “Powerful . . . A story to touch all of your emotions.” —Janelle Taylor, New York Times–bestselling author of Moondust and Madness

Book excerpt: This beautifully illustrated, inspirational fable is about a little frog named Freddy who is rescued by a kind, old lady named Elinor. It is based on an event experienced between the author and Elinor, a wonderful ninety-three year old that inspired this rhyming fabled story. While escaping from poverty and his abusive father, Freddy runs away and hides behind Elinor's trash can. She takes him in, cares for his wounds, and showers him with the love he had been missing at home. While getting settled into Elinor's beautiful little house, Freddy the frog, comes to love his new surroundings.Elinor introduces him to some new friends who are other animals, now her adopted 'kids'. Freddy finds that he has many things in common with these new friends - Yankee, Rex, Sue and Junior. They learn a lot of life lessons while having fun and helping Elinor around the house. Wise Elinor helps them learn to overcome fear through God's love and through taking risks. The story ends with a test in faith and courage when the whole family goes for a day to the zip lines and soars over the trees. This is a highlight in both Freddy's and Elinor's lives where they both find new motivation to let the past go and move forward in life. The purpose of this fable is threefold: to open a window to create empathy for neglected, orphaned and abused children, to act as a door to elicit action to change the future for the vulnerable and to act as a mirror to promote healing for those who see themselves reflected in the characters. The moral or lesson in this story teaches that taking a risk to trust others creates courage to soar over life's troubles.

Book excerpt: There is nothing lonelier than a cat who has been loved, at least for a while, and then abandoned on the side of the road. A calico cat, about to have kittens, hears the lonely howl of a chained-up hound deep in the backwaters of the bayou. She dares to find him in the forest, and the hound dares to befriend this cat, this feline, this creature he is supposed to hate. They are an unlikely pair, about to become an unlikely family. Ranger urges the cat to hide underneath the porch, to raise her kittens there because Gar-Face, the man living inside the house, will surely use them as alligator bait should he find them. But they are safe in the Underneath...as long as they stay in the Underneath. Kittens, however, are notoriously curious creatures. And one kitten’s one moment of curiosity sets off a chain of events that is astonishing, remarkable, and enormous in its meaning. For everyone who loves Sounder, Shiloh, and The Yearling, for everyone who loves the haunting beauty of writers such as Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, Flannery O’Connor, and Carson McCullers, Kathi Appelt spins a harrowing yet keenly sweet tale about the power of love—and its opposite, hate—the fragility of happiness and the importance of making good on your promises.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While teaching at an all-Black middle school in Atlanta, Meira Levinson realized that students’ individual self-improvement would not necessarily enable them to overcome their profound marginalization within American society. This is because of a civic empowerment gap that is as shameful and antidemocratic as the academic achievement gap targeted by No Child Left Behind. No Citizen Left Behind argues that students must be taught how to upend and reshape power relationships directly, through political and civic action. Drawing on political theory, empirical research, and her own on-the-ground experience, Levinson shows how de facto segregated urban schools can and must be at the center of this struggle. Recovering the civic purposes of public schools will take more than tweaking the curriculum. Levinson calls on schools to remake civic education. Schools should teach collective action, openly discuss the racialized dimensions of citizenship, and provoke students by engaging their passions against contemporary injustices. Students must also have frequent opportunities to take civic and political action, including within the school itself. To build a truly egalitarian society, we must reject myths of civic sameness and empower all young people to raise their diverse voices. Levinson’s account challenges not just educators but all who care about justice, diversity, or democracy.
