Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors of this book argue that small-scale enterprises are not necessarily the marginal features of developing economies they are often thought to be. If micro-enterprises with 0-4 employees succeed in developing into small enterprises with 5-19 workers, they can form a dynamic sector with vital links to agriculture and other sectors of the economy. Taking this argument as a starting point for their research in the Nakuru and Kericho Districts in Kenya, the authors aim to explain why most micro-enterprises remain small. They convincingly demonstrate that small-scale enterprises face considerable constraints at all stages of their development. These constraints specifically operate against female-owned, rurally located and service-oriented businesses. Innovative policy interventions are needed to remove these constraints and enhance the sector's contribution to peoples' cash incomes and economic welfare. By providing detailed information on the features of small-scale enterprises and their problems during formation, operation and growth, this book lays the foundations for effective and tailor-made support.

Book Synopsis Entrepreneurship in Micro-enterprises by : Kenneth R. Gray
Download or read book Entrepreneurship in Micro-enterprises written by Kenneth R. Gray and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 1996 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This timely and important work studies Kenya's small scale manufacturers. What makes the book unique is Gray's sub-sector approach, which focuses on the particular industries of tailoring, woodwork and metalwork. Gray investigates the development of these sub-sectors by taking a strategic management approach. Such an approach allows the author to assess enterprise competitiveness and profitability within industries. Readers will find that the information in this book serves as a well-needed supplement to the literature on the World Bank's July 1995 decision to focus more on micro-enterprise development. The book will appeal to many different audiences including development agencies concerned with the economic development community and the international academic community. Business and social science students who are interested in how work is organized in the family and the effects of modernization on traditional society will also benefit from reading this book.
Book Synopsis Small Scale Industry in Kenya by : Peter Kilby
Download or read book Small Scale Industry in Kenya written by Peter Kilby and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Extract: This study treats small scale industry in Kenya. It is common wisdom that small production units possess a number of virtues and that special effort is warranted to promote the growth of this subsector. Such a view is acceptable, but in need of some refinement. It is the argument of this paper that for each country there exists an optimum size distribution of firms. This optimum is determined at any point in time by technological factors and by the pattern of demand. Owing to market imperfections and government policies that are biased with respect to scale, observed shares of output and employment in many underdeveloped countries are heavily skewed toward large scale enterprise. This malproportionality is strikingly evident in the case of Kenya.

This book was released on 2014-04-16 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2012 in the subject Economics - Micro-economics, grade: B, The University of Chicago, language: English, abstract: About 99% of all the enterprises in the world are small or medium enterprises characterized of start up firms at the infant stage or well established SMEs. SMEs are essential in all economies especially to the developing countries characterized by major unemployment and income distribution challenges. In Kenya, SMEs are essential to the economy for which they are considered the main drivers. There are about 7.5 million SMEs in Kenya providing employment and income generating opportunities to low income sectors of the economy. The official policy framework of SMEs in Kenya is contained in the Sessional Paper No 2 of 2005: Development of Micro and Small Enterprises for Wealth and Employment Creation for Poverty Reduction. The policy forms the basis for enacting the SME Act which institutionalizes SME policy in Kenya (Syekei & Opijah, 2012). The contribution of the SMEs sector to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in Kenya increased from 13.8 percent in 1993 to about 40 percent by 2008. The sector further provides approximately 80% of the total employment and contributes about 92% of the new jobs created within the economy. The sector serves as the bedrock for industrializing the country in the future (Capital Markets Authority, 2010). In the developing countries such as Kenya, with large informal or micro enterprise sectors, SMEs constitute the middle of the size range, hence their strategic importance. SMEs are considerably more complicated in terms of the organizational structure as opposed to microenterprises but less complicated as opposed to large corporations with layers of management and high division of labor among other characteristics. In terms of technology SMEs are intermediate between high labor intensive technologies and high capital intensive technologies providing SMEs with a special role in generation of adequate or decent employment (Palma, 2005). Due to these characteristics various constraints lower SMEs resilience to risk and prevent them from growing and attaining economies of scale. The challenges faced by SMEs in Kenya are not limited to the areas of financing investments and working capital but also include human resource development, market access and access to modern technology and information. Consequently, there are various factors that have supported SMEs growth since the 1990s (Capital Markets Authority, 2010).

Book excerpt: The lack of credit facilities in Kenya's rural areas is a significant obstacle to building a sustainable rural financial market. A recent estimate placed the gap between the level of credit supplied and the effective demand for credit at some Ksh. 57 billion. The Government of Kenya has, since the early 1990s, shown an interest in the development of small-scale and micro-enterprises. The Kenya Rural Enterprise Program (K-REP) was established in 1984 as an intermediary Non Government Organization (NGO), providing credit for on lending and technical assistance to other NGOs. To promote growth and generate employment in the micro-enterprise sector, K-REP lends to clients who would otherwise find it extremely difficult to access credit from commercial banks and other formal financial institutions. Its operations are currently concentrated in Nairobi, Nyeri, Eldoret and Embu. Kenya Rural Enterprise Program: case study of a micro-finance scheme documents K-REP's innovations and performance, and provides some insight on how to improve micro-finance programs.

This book was released on 2022-03-20 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study looks at the business models of small and medium sized rice processors in Kenya in order to better understand the policy and technical support they need to grow and fulfil their role in agrifood systems transformation. More specifically, by employing semi-structured interviews with Kenyan rice millers, the technical study identifies challenges in their day-to-day business activities, including procurement, inbound and outbound logistics, in-house operations, financing, and human resources management. Additionally, the publication looks at opportunities for improving the business enabling environment in which these enterprises operate, providing a set of policy options to foster their role. The methodology cross fertilises different disciplinary perspectives in order to gather evidence for formulating policy in a way that integrates several policy fields and cross-cutting issues such as food safety, quality and nutrition; farmer-market linkages; decent rural employment and gender equality; or rural investment. The paper showcases how small and medium agrifood manufacturers respond to the business enabling environment and also contribute to local development from multiple angles.
