Formerly a subject of interest only to a few special ists and for which the literature was relatively smalI, the needs of structures for aerospace missions instigated a torrent of papers on all facets of the theory which also found application in the less glamorous earthbound shell struc tures important in everyday life. Some idea of the rapidity of the development can be gained from the fact that a bibliography* completed in 1953 listed some 1455 books and papers as the sum total ofthe literature on shell theory to that date. Three years later, however, a supplementt added another 884 papers to the list, an increase of 60 per cent in that short period of time. The number of papers published since these listings has increased to an extent that does not bear contemplation. Obviously no single volume could contain all that constitutes the theory of shells and so this book is restricted to that portion of the theory associated with small deformations of elastic shells. Plastic deformations of shells, which is hardly developed, and nonlinear deformations and stability, which would require at least aseparate volume, are thus excluded. Even with this restriction, however, the present volume represents a long overdue compro mise between completeness and finiteness. In making this compromise I have undoubtedly omitted discussions of many topics and references to many excellent papers which should have been included.

However, the fundamental principles of holography are developed there only briefly in preparation for a discussion of interference fringe modifications. This new volume in the series is intended to consider in detail many topics which were previously omitted, such as the deformation or distortion of holo graphic images, the theory of volume holograms, composite or multiplex holo graphy, holographic interferometry of transparent media, time dependent effects, holographic contouring, and applications of fringe modifications to the deformation of opaque bodies. In addition, these and other subjects will be treated with the same unifying concept developed in Vol. 16, but with an addi tional emphasis on those features that have their origins in classical optics, espe cially the small-wavelength approach, the coupled-wave theory, and the Seidel aberrations. Nonlinear problems have become its main motive. But the analysis was until recently predominantly devoted to shells designed for strength and stiffness. Nonlinearity is here relevant to buckling, to intensively vary able stress states. These are (with exception of some limit cases) covered by the quasi-shallow shell theory. The emphasis of the nonlinear analysis begins to shift further - to shells which are designed for and actually capable of large elastic displacements. These shells, used in industry for over a century, have been recently termedj1exible shells. The European Mechanics Colloquium 165. was concerned with the theory of elastic shells in connection with its applications to these shells. The Colloquium was intended to discuss: 1. The formulations of the nonlinear shell theory, different in the generality of kine matic hypothesis, and in the choice of dependent variables. 2. The specialization of the shell theory for the class of shells and the respective elastic stress states assuring flexibility. 3. Possibilities to deal with the complications of the buckling analysis of flexible shells, caused by the precritial perturbations of their shape and stress state. 4. Methods of solution appropriate for the nonlinear flexible-shell problems. 5. Applications of the theory. There were 71 participants the sessions were presided over (in that order) by E. Reissner, J. As a result of the growing pace of applications, research into structural optimization methods is increasingly driven by real-life problems. t-.Jost engineers who design structures employ complex general-purpose software packages for structural analysis. Often they do not have any access to the source program, and even more frequently they have only scant knowledge of the details of the structural analysis algorithms used in this software packages. Therefore the major challenge faced by researchers in structural optimization is to develop methods that are suitable for use with such software packages. Another major challenge is the high computational cost associated with the analysis of many complex real-life problems. In many cases the engineer who has the task of designing a structure cannot afford to analyze it more than a handful of times.

Book excerpt: Most fluid flows of practical importance are fully three-dimensional, so the non-linear instability properties of three-dimensional flows are of particular interest. In some cases the three-dimensionality may have been caused by a finite amplitude disturbance whilst, more usually, the unperturbed state is three-dimensional. Practical applications where transition is thought to be associated with non-linearity in a three- dimensional flow arise, for example, in aerodynamics (swept wings, engine nacelles, etc.), turbines and aortic blood flow. Here inviscid `cross-flow' disturbances as well as Tollmien-Schlichting and Görtler vortices can all occur simultaneously and their mutual non-linear behaviour must be understood if transition is to be predicted. The non-linear interactions are so complex that usually fully numerical or combined asymptotic/numerical methods must be used. Moreover, in view of the complexity of the instability processes, there is also a growing need for detailed and accurate experimental information. Carefully conducted tests allow us to identify those elements of a particular problem which are dominant. This assists in both the formulation of a relevant theoretical problem and the subsequent physical validation of predictions. It should be noted that the demands made upon the skills of the experimentalist are high and that the tests can be extremely sophisticated - often making use of the latest developments in flow diagnostic techniques, automated high speed data gathering, data analysis, fast processing and presentation.

The cracks which grow may either originate from some pre-existing macroscopic defect, or, if the component is of high integrity but highly stressed, a region of localized stress concentration. In turn, such concentrators may be caused by some minute defect, such as a tiny inclusion, or inadvertent machining damage. Another source of surface damage which may exist between notionally 'bonded' components is associated with minute relative motion along the interface, brought about usually be cyclic tangential loading. Such fretting damage is quite insidious, and may lead to many kinds of problems such as wear, but it is its influence on the promotion of embryo cracks with which we are concerned here. When the presence of fretting is associated with decreased fatigue performance the effect is known as fretting fatigue. Fretting fatigue is a subject drawing equally on materials science and applied mechanics, but it is the intention in this book to concentrate attention entirely on the latter aspects, in a search for the quantification of the influence of fretting on both crack nucleation and propagation. There have been very few previous texts in this area, and the present volume seeks to cover five principal areas; (a) The modelling of contact problems including partial slip under tangentialloading, which produces the surface damage. (b) The modelling of short cracks by rigorous methods which deal effectively with steep stress gradients, kinking and closure. (c) The experimental simulation of fretting fatigue.
