This technique is compared to the more frequently used statically loaded, alternate immersion test technique used for evaluating the susceptibility of aluminum alloys to stress corrosion cracking (SCC). Aluminum alloys (2124 and 7075), each in three conditions with differing susceptibilities to SCC, were tested by both the statically loaded alternate immersion test and the slow strain-rate technique. The results of these tests are compared and the slow strain-rate test is shown to be a viable, rapid technique for determining the SCC susceptibility of aluminum alloys.

Book excerpt: An extensive program of slow-strain-rate stress corrosion testing of aluminum alloys in a wide variety of susceptibility conditions and environments produced results fully consistent with the expected behavior from service experience and the results of other established test methods. Tests were conducted both on laboratory alloys in sheet form and on commercial alloys in wire, sheet, and plate forms; the systems studied included Al-Zn-Mg, Al-Zn-Mg-Cu, Al-Cu-Mg, and Al-Mg. Suitable strain rate regimes for testing, standard environments, and optimum stress corrosion susceptibility parameters were established. In general, a rate of 10-6/s was found to be appropriate for 2000 and 7000 series alloys and 10-4/s for 5000 series alloys. The most effective test environment was found to be 3% NaCl + 0.3% H2O2 for all alloys tested, and in general either relative elongation or reduction in area was the most meaningful susceptibility assessment parameter.

Alloys investigated were Al-2.6% Li-1.4% and Al-2.6% Li-1.4% Cu-1.6% Mg. The base properties of the alloys were characterized. Process, heat treatment, and size/orientational effects on the tensile and fracture behavior were investigated. Metallurgical and electrochemical conditions are identified which provide reproducible and controlled parameters for stress corrosion evaluation. Preliminary stress corrosion test results are reported. Both Al-Li-Cu alloys appear more susceptible to stress corrosion crack initiation than 7075-T6 aluminum, with the magnesium bearing alloy being the most susceptible. Tests to determine the threshold stress intensity for the base and magnesium bearing alloys are underway. Twelve each, bolt loaded DCB type specimens are under test (120 days) and limited crack growth in these precracked specimens has been observed. General corrosion in the aqueous sodium chloride environment is thought to be obscuring results through crack tip blunting.

Book excerpt: The stress-corrosion-cracking (SCC) susceptibility of Al 7075-T6 alloys has been studied in a controlled-atmosphere chamber utilizing the slow-strain-rate technique. The effects of high-humidity air with small additions of sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, and surface salts in different combinations have been investigated to predict the behavior of industrial environments. The slow-strain-rate technique has been used to optimize the simulated environments which result in accelerated crack growth and failure by SCC in high-strength Al 7075-T6 alloy. These controlled environmental tests provide initial data on the environmental susceptibility needed for the development of realistic accelerated-corrosion testing methods. The design of the environmental chamber for providing controlled atmospheres is discussed and initial experimental results are presented.
