Book excerpt: First published in 1960, this is the autobiography of George Freeman Pollock, a young Washington, D.C. man who in 1895 founded, built and managed the Skyland Resort, originally called Stony Man Camp, in Virginia. “The Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, separating the eastern or Piedmont and Tidewater sections from the Shenandoah Valley, commence at the south side of the gap at Harper’s Ferry. Thence, stretching out in a southwestwardly direction, they become substantially higher near Front Royal (at the beginning of the Shenandoah National Park) and further on in the Park, in the vicinity of Sperryville to the east and Luray to the west, they reach an apex in lofty Hawksbill Mountain and in the slightly lower though more imposing Stony Man Mountain. “In 1886, fifty years before the establishment of the Shenandoah National Park, a young man came to Stony Man Mountain and in 1894 (on one of its shoulders, a plateau) he founded a summer resort. Soon known far and wide as ‘Skyland,’ this resort was and, to a degree, still is the heart of Stony Man Mountain as well as of the area surrounding it and until 1937, the young man (he never grew old) was the soul of Skyland.”—STUART E. BROWN, JR.

Once they arrive, they find themselves mired in Patmos' uneasy sense of timelessness, where history and the present jumble together. In their hunt for the painting of the iconic gay novelist, they discover that the island's isolation from the global catastrophe surrounding it, from the refugees interned on nearby Samos to the fascist rise in Europe and the United States, is more pose than reality.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Situated in the beautiful San Bernardino Range, Crestline is the gateway community to the famous mountain resorts of Lake Arrowhead and Big Bear Lake. Historically, the area was known for timber-cutting, hunting and fishing, fruit and nut harvesting and, later on, skiing and other winter sports. The first visitors to the area were Native Americans escaping the Mojave Desert summers; followed in the 1850s by Mormon lumberjacks who built San Bernardino Town at the base of the mountains; and then successors who bought the sawmills and settled into mountain living. In these stories of Crestline's formative times, historian Rhea-Frances Tetley recalls some of the more intrepid and colorful characters to have trekked through the western San Bernardinos.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Ashe County Memorial Hospital opened in November 1941, it was the realization of a dream for the poor, sparsely populated county in the mountains of northwestern North Carolina. Building a hospital is a major undertaking for any community at any time. Accomplishing this in the waning days of the Great Depression and on the brink of World War II, while scant local resources were taxed by catastrophic floods and severe snows, was a remarkable feat of community organization. This is the story of the generations of supporters, doctors, nurses, emergency personnel and others whose lives are interwoven with regional health care and the planning, building and operation of (the "new") Ashe Memorial Hospital. This legacy, brought to life through 114 photographs and personal interviews with 97 individuals, traces the development of health care in a remote Appalachian community, from the days of folk remedies and midwives, to horseback doctors and early infirmaries, to the technological advances and outreach efforts of today's Ashe Memorial Hospital.

Book excerpt: After Hurricane Sandy, Nick Fowler, a writer, stranded alone in a Manhattan apartment without power, begins to contemplate disaster. Months later, at an artist residency in upstate New York, Nick finds his subject in disaster itself and the communities shaped by it, where crisis animates both hope and denial, unacknowledged pasts and potential futures. As he travels to Los Angeles and London on assignment, Nick discovers that outsiders - their lives and histories disturbed by sex, loss, and bad weather - are often better understood by what they have hidden from the world than what they have revealed.

Book excerpt: For fifteen years Sue Eisenfeld hiked in Shenandoah National Park in the Virginia Blue Ridge Mountains, unaware of the tragic history behind the creation of the park. In this travel narrative, she tells the story of her on-the-ground discovery of the relics and memories a few thousand mountain residents left behind when the government used eminent domain to kick the people off their land to create the park. With historic maps and notes from hikers who explored before her, Eisenfeld and her husband hike, backpack, and bushwhack the hills and the hollows of this beloved but misbegotten place, searching for stories. Descendants recount memories of their ancestors “grieving themselves to death,” and they continue to speak of their people’s displacement from the land as an untold national tragedy. Shenandoah: A Story of Conservation and Betrayal is Eisenfeld’s personal journey into the park’s hidden past based on her off-trail explorations. She describes the turmoil of residents’ removal as well as the human face of the government officials behind the formation of the park. In this conflict between conservation for the benefit of a nation and private land ownership, she explores her own complicated personal relationship with the park—a relationship she would not have without the heartbreak of the thousands of people removed from their homes.
