Bare feet shouldn't fly. Long legs shouldn't spin. Braids shouldn't flap in the wind. 'Sit on the porch and be a lady,' Papa scolded Alice. In Alice's Georgia hometown, there was no track where an African-American girl could practice, so she made her own crossbar with sticks and rags. With the support of her coach, friends, and community, Alice started to win medals. Her dream to compete at the Olympics came true in 1948. This is an inspiring free-verse story of the first African-American woman to win an Olympic gold medal. Photos of Alice Coachman are also included.

In September of that year, Wilbur and Orville finally showed the world, firsthand, just what they had achieved. In the United States, Wilbur delighted the crowd with spectacular flying demonstrations in New York City during the city's Hudson-Fulton Celebration. He flew over the harbor, glided past tall buildings, looped the Statue of Liberty, and even traveled up the Hudson River to Grant's Tomb. The people of New York were astonished and thrilled to witness these unbelievable flights. At the same time, Orville held daring public exhibitions in Germany and set amazing new records. He flew the highest ever, and took the longest flight with a passenger. The Wright brothers opened doors that no one knew could be opened! Louise Borden and Trish Marx document the extraordinary lives and achievements of two of our most celebrated American heroes, Wilbur and Orville Wright, from their humble beginnings to their later success and riches.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Touch The Sky" is about love. It is a series of love songs or poems. The wondrous love between a man and a woman. The mystery of God's love for a man and a man's love for God in communion in the big things and in the little things of life. The mystery of being sent as a living sign and ambassador of unbound love and of joy unspeakable, knowing the weight of the Presence of the Divine "with" us, through the thick and thin of life, its ups and downs, its great griefs and great joys to this one End - that Love conquer all to make all things as new again. Without love there is no hope. With love our hope is like a great diamond with many faces which shine on us with the many facets of God's face reflected here in so many aspects of life. The facets of His Love are like a rock not hewn by human hands with which He draws and makes us His. "Touch The Sky" contains treasure that the author has brought back from diving trips beneath the surface of the seen where the net of thought drips words back into the the ungraspable whole of it.

"When a war ends it does not go away," my mother says."It hides inside us . . . Just forget!" But I do not want to do what Mother says . . . I want to remember. In this groundbreaking memoir set in Ramallah during the aftermath of the 1967 Six-Day War, Ibtisam Barakat captures what it is like to be a child whose world is shattered by war. With candor and courage, she stitches together memories of her childhood: fear and confusion as bombs explode near her home and she is separated from her family; the harshness of life as a Palestinian refugee; her unexpected joy when she discovers Alef, the first letter of the Arabic alphabet. This is the beginning of her passionate connection to words, and as language becomes her refuge, allowing her to piece together the fragments of her world, it becomes her true home. Transcending the particulars of politics, this illuminating and timely book provides a telling glimpse into a little-known culture that has become an increasingly important part of the puzzle of world peace.

They were only trying to deal with bad situations at home when they became lifelines for each other. Their pipe dream was to someday meet in LA, where Lucas would design skyscrapers, and Gabriel would learn to fly. But then Gabriel disappeared without so much as a goodbye, and Lucas got himself in trouble with the law. Five years later, both men are at a loss when they run into each other at a Hollywood bar. Lucas is still angry, but it's not as if Gabriel could control how his mind and body had betrayed him. Being found on the ledge of that bridge had changed everything. The attraction is immediate, but it's more than their inability to keep their hands off each other. Neither man expects the fierce connection pulling them together. Unfortunately, ignoring their problems doesn't make them disappear. Gabriel's internal struggles are serious...dangerous. And no matter how much Lucas wants it to be true, saving Gabriel won't make up for not being able to save his mom. If they don't find the strength to face their own demons before the darkness takes hold, they risk more than just losing each other forever.

Book excerpt: Keep to yourself. Focus on the job. Sheriff Vaughn Ellis’s very existence as a rare double-shifter defies the natural order. It also makes it extremely difficult for him to get close to anyone. To trust anyone. It’s nothing Vaughn can’t handle, until a seductively sweet woman arrives in Black Robe, and suddenly he can’t think about anything but her. The product of a witch/werewolf pairing, Hannah Cochran gets the odd-wolf-out thing. But when she uncovers a major threat to the lycanthrope world, she finds herself playing nice with the sexy sheriff. Abiding by the law isn’t usually Hannah’s style, but nothing catches her breath quite like the commanding attraction she feels toward Vaughn. Working closely together only intensifies their fated connection, making it impossible to deny—or resist. Hannah fears that getting involved puts Vaughn in danger. But when she becomes the target, it’s Vaughn who’ll have to decide which rules he’s willing to break to save the woman he can’t live without. One-click with confidence. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a world obsessed with the virtual, tangible things are once again making history. Tangible Things invites readers to look closely at the things around them, ordinary things like the food on their plate and extraordinary things like the transit of planets across the sky. It argues that almost any material thing, when examined closely, can be a link between present and past. The authors of this book pulled an astonishing array of materials out of storage--from a pencil manufactured by Henry David Thoreau to a bracelet made from iridescent beetles--in a wide range of Harvard University collections to mount an innovative exhibition alongside a new general education course. The exhibition challenged the rigid distinctions between history, anthropology, science, and the arts. It showed that object-centered inquiry inevitably leads to a questioning of categories within and beyond history. Tangible Things is both an introduction to the range and scope of Harvard's remarkable collections and an invitation to reassess collections of all sorts, including those that reside in the bottom drawers or attics of people's houses. It interrogates the nineteenth-century categories that still divide art museums from science museums and historical collections from anthropological displays and that assume history is made only from written documents. Although it builds on a larger discussion among specialists, it makes its arguments through case studies, hoping to simultaneously entertain and inspire. The twenty case studies take us from the Galapagos Islands to India and from a third-century Egyptian papyrus fragment to a board game based on the twentieth-century comic strip "Dagwood and Blondie." A companion website catalogs the more than two hundred objects in the original exhibition and suggests ways in which the principles outlined in the book might change the way people understand the tangible things that surround them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Yearning to Touch the Sky” is an amusing fable about one single individual’s search for a place to inhale and exhale freely. It is a tale about a painstaking journey to a new state of mind. The fictional story touches as a corollary on issues of race, class, sex and heterosexism. The author, Grover of America, calls for the birth of a new existence….a spiritual rebirth. He says; “we are part of the past and a part of the future, but because of our short memory, we have become prisoners of the present, prisoners of the market, afraid of listening to the wisdom of our ancestors.” This is a cry in the dark…against anachronistic colonialists, fanatical neo-liberals, racists, right neo-radicals and religious fundamentalists of whatever color. It is an appeal against the perversion of violence and a plea for respecting human uniqueness and the heterogeneity inherent in human societies.
