Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sixth Year Language Reader In the composition lessons the object has been to give pupils a very definite aim in each written exercise, proceeding logi cally from sentence to paragraph study, and then to the writ ing of whole compositions. We have also guarded against monotony by giving a great variety of exercises, both oral and written. The grammar lessons cover the maximum amount ordinarily to be expected from a Sixth Grade class. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from School Reading by Grades: Sixth Year The pupil who is in his sixth year at school should be able to read quite well. He should be able to pronounce at sight and without hesita tion all new or unusual words; and when reading aloud, his tones should be so clear, his enunciation so faultless, and his manner so agreeable that his hearers shall listen with pleasure and shall have a ready under standing oi whatever is being read. He is now prepared to devote more and more attention to literary criticisin - that is, to the study of the peculiarities of style which distinguish any selection, the passages which are remarkable for their beauty, their truth, or their adaptation to the particular purpose for which they were written. The habit should be cultivated of looking for and enjoying the admirable qualities of any literary production, and particularly of such productions as are generally recognized as the classics of our language. While learning to distinguish between good literature and that sort of writing which, properly speaking, is not literature at all, the pupil's acquaintance with books is enlarged and extended. He learns to know what are the best books and why they are so considered; and he acquires some knowledge of the lives of the best authors and of the circumstances under which certain of their works were produced. The present volume is designed to aid the learner in the acquisition of all these ends. The selections are of a highly interesting character, and illustrate almost every variety of English composition. To assist in their comprehension, many of the selections are introduced or followed by brief historical or bibliographical notes. Hints also are given as to col lateral, or supplementary readings on a variety of subjects. To assist the pupil still further to enlarge his acquaintance with books and authors, additional notes, literary and biographical, are given in the appendix; here also may be found several pages of brief notes explanatory of dith cult passages, unusual expressions, and historical references, such as might otherwise be stumbling stones in the way of the learner. The numerous portraits of authors is another important feature designed to add to the interest and beauty of the book, and to assist the pupil to a more intimate acquaintance with the makers of our literature. Most of the full-page pictures are reproductions of famous paintings, and these, while serving as illustrations of the text which they accompany, are designed to Introduce the learner to some of the masters of art also, and perform the more important office of cultivating and enlarging his aesthetic tastes and sympathies. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Language Readers Primer The child comes to school at the age of six or seven with a speaking vocabulary of several hundred words, say from five hundred to seven hundred words. This number will vary according to his environment and home influences. In teaching reading to these first year pupils, the aim should be to teach the child to recognize the symbols for the ideas which he already possesses. In other words, the aim is not to enlarge the child's speaking vocabulary but rather to convert it into a reading vocabulary. The child must learn to associate form and sound; the printed symbol must suggest an idea. Furthermore the child must learn to translate these symbols into oral language expressively rendered. If the class be one composed largely of children who speak little or no English, the problem is more complex. The teacher must build up an English vocabulary for the most commonplace actions and ideas, and, at the same time, must associate the spoken words which the pupils are learning day by day with the printed or written symbols. That is, the teacher must teach English speech as well as reading. In this Primer no particular method has been fol lowed absolutely. The aim has been to use the best features of the word, the look and say, the sen tence, the phonic, and the Gouin methods. Nouns, verbs, and adjectives in common use form the basis of the child's reading vocabulary. These should be taught as sight words. As an introduction to the work in reading, such commands as stand, face, etc., which are at first given orally by the teacher, may be written on the board and the children directed to obey them. The first sentences in this Primer direct the performance of certain actions, one purpose being to secure silent reading before oral reading is attempted. These have been retold, for the most part, in the words of the children themselves, very simply, with a great deal of conversation, and in a form which can be satisfactorily worked out by a class after a little practice in dramatizing such things as Mother Goose rhymes. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Reader Nothing is more natural than that mothers should pride on their children, but they must take care not to wrong them by it. It is a vain satisfaction for mothers to take pride in their children muttering a few sentences of a foreign language. French, for example; Because if these few sentences have been learned, as lessons, after the favorite method of begin ning, as they say, by learning to speak in the first lesson, then it amounts to less than nothing. This may seem a fine beginning, but it may be observed that the pupil will stick xto it and go no farther. They say from the first: avez-oous da pain oui, monsieur, j'ai da pain they say it still at the end, after five or six 'years' study, with the addition of a few more sentences. But as to speaking, or reading, or writing the language studied, they are unable to do it. And people should know that such a knowledge of a foreign language, does not pass the limit of ridicule. However, there are some, it may be said, who having thus began, have succeeded in learning to speak foreign languages. That is true, but if you question them, you will find that they have read and written a great deal, and were they at all conscious of their own progress, they would tell you that they have learned what they know by reading. Then the learning of sentences had been trouble and time lost, two valuable things spoiled. To pretend to learn languages in such or such collections of sentences, be it Ollendorf, Manesca, Fas quelle, etc., is as reasonable as to pretend to drink up the Ocean by drinking a glass of its water. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Jones Fifth Reader This book is intended as a basal reader for pupils of the sixth, seventh, and eighth years in school These years make up a period oi high enthusiasms and noble impulses. During this period ideals of life and conduct are rapidly shaping them selves in the minds of the growing girls and boys. Susceptible as they are at this age to evil in uences, they yet respond most readily to the call of higher motives. Noble, daring, and heroic action, when properly pictured to them, seems native to the human spirit. To rouse and sustain these noble ambitions, to make the right in human action seem reasonable and desirable, to give that general intelligence which underlies helpful social cooperation, and, above all, to permeate this growing intelligence with a pure and deep love for our country and its institutions, - is a dominant purpose of this reader. The selections are taken from the best literature of the English language. A wide range of themes gives breadth and scope to the imagination as well as a foundation for general intelligence as opposed to technical knowledge.
