Book Synopsis Singularities of Solutions to Chemotaxis Systems by : Piotr Biler
Download or read book Singularities of Solutions to Chemotaxis Systems written by Piotr Biler and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2019-12-02 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Keller-Segel model for chemotaxis is a prototype of nonlocal systems describing concentration phenomena in physics and biology. While the two-dimensional theory is by now quite complete, the questions of global-in-time solvability and blowup characterization are largely open in higher dimensions. In this book, global-in-time solutions are constructed under (nearly) optimal assumptions on initial data and rigorous blowup criteria are derived.

This book was released on 2020-11-23 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book will benefit a reader with a background in physical sciences and applied mathematics interested in the mathematical models of genetic evolution. In the first chapter, we analyze several thought experiments based on a basic model of stochastic evolution of a single genomic site in the presence of the factors of random mutation, directional natural selection, and random genetic drift. In the second chapter, we present a more advanced theory for a large number of linked loci. In the third chapter, we include the effect of genetic recombination into account and find out the advantage of sexual reproduction for adaptation. These models are useful for the evolution of a broad range of asexual and sexual populations, including virus evolution in a host and a host population.

Book Synopsis Singularities in PDE and the Calculus of Variations by : Stanley Alama
Download or read book Singularities in PDE and the Calculus of Variations written by Stanley Alama and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains papers presented at the "Workshop on Singularities in PDE and the Calculus of Variations" at the CRM in July 2006. The main theme of the meeting was the formation of geometrical singularities in PDE problems with a variational formulation. These equations typically arise in some applications (to physics, engineering, or biology, for example) and their resolution often requires a combination of methods coming from areas such as functional and harmonic analysis, differential geometry and geometric measure theory. Among the PDE problems discussed were: the Cahn-Hilliard model of phase transitions and domain walls; vortices in Ginzburg-Landau type models for superconductivity and superfluidity; the Ohna-Kawasaki model for di-block copolymers; models of image enhancement; and Monge-Ampere functions. The articles give a sampling of problems and methods in this diverse area of mathematics, which touches a large part of modern mathematics and its applications.

Book Synopsis Navier-Stokes Equations by : Roger Temam
Download or read book Navier-Stokes Equations written by Roger Temam and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2001-04-10 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1977, the book is devoted to the theory and numerical analysis of the Navier-Stokes equations for viscous incompressible fluid. On the theoretical side, results related to the existence, the uniqueness, and, in some cases, the regularity of solutions are presented. On the numerical side, various approaches to the approximation of Navier-Stokes problems by discretization are considered, such as the finite dereference method, the finite element method, and the fractional steps method. The problems of stability and convergence for numerical methods are treated as completely as possible. The new material in the present book (as compared to the preceding 1984 edition) is an appendix reproducing a survey article written in 1998. This appendix touches upon a few aspects not addressed in the earlier editions, in particular a short derivation of the Navier-Stokes equations from the basic conservation principles in continuum mechanics, further historical perspectives, and indications on new developments in the area. The appendix also surveys some aspects of the related Euler equations and the compressible Navier-Stokes equations. The book is written in the style of a textbook and the author has attempted to make the treatment self-contained. It can be used as a textbook or a reference book for researchers. Prerequisites for reading the book include some familiarity with the Navier-Stokes equations and some knowledge of functional analysis and Sololev spaces.

Book Synopsis Methods Of Geometry In The Theory Of Partial Differential Equations: Principle Of The Cancellation Of Singularities by : Takashi Suzuki
Download or read book Methods Of Geometry In The Theory Of Partial Differential Equations: Principle Of The Cancellation Of Singularities written by Takashi Suzuki and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2024-01-22 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mathematical models are used to describe the essence of the real world, and their analysis induces new predictions filled with unexpected phenomena. In spite of a huge number of insights derived from a variety of scientific fields in these five hundred years of the theory of differential equations, and its extensive developments in these one hundred years, several principles that ensure these successes are discovered very recently. This monograph focuses on one of them: cancellation of singularities derived from interactions of multiple species, which is described by the language of geometry, in particular, that of global analysis.Five objects of inquiry, scattered across different disciplines, are selected in this monograph: evolution of geometric quantities, models of multi-species in biology, interface vanishing of d - δ systems, the fundamental equation of electro-magnetic theory, and free boundaries arising in engineering. The relaxation of internal tensions in these systems, however, is described commonly by differential forms, and the reader will be convinced of further applications of this principle to other areas.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This memoir attempts at a systematic study of convergence to stationary state for certain classes of degenerate diffusive equations, taking the general form ${\frac{\partial f}{\partial t}}+ L f =0$. The question is whether and how one can overcome the degeneracy by exploiting commutators.

Book Synopsis The Lin-Ni's Problem for Mean Convex Domains by : Olivier Druet
Download or read book The Lin-Ni's Problem for Mean Convex Domains written by Olivier Druet and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2012 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors prove some refined asymptotic estimates for positive blow-up solutions to $\Delta u+\epsilon u=n(n-2)u^{\frac{n+2}{n-2}}$ on $\Omega$, $\partial_\nu u=0$ on $\partial\Omega$, $\Omega$ being a smooth bounded domain of $\mathbb{R}^n$, $n\geq 3$. In particular, they show that concentration can occur only on boundary points with nonpositive mean curvature when $n=3$ or $n\geq 7$. As a direct consequence, they prove the validity of the Lin-Ni's conjecture in dimension $n=3$ and $n\geq 7$ for mean convex domains and with bounded energy. Recent examples by Wang-Wei-Yan show that the bound on the energy is a necessary condition.

Book Synopsis Mean Field Theories and Dual Variation - Mathematical Structures of the Mesoscopic Model by : Takashi Suzuki
Download or read book Mean Field Theories and Dual Variation - Mathematical Structures of the Mesoscopic Model written by Takashi Suzuki and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-11-19 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mean field approximation has been adopted to describe macroscopic phenomena from microscopic overviews. It is still in progress; fluid mechanics, gauge theory, plasma physics, quantum chemistry, mathematical oncology, non-equilibirum thermodynamics. spite of such a wide range of scientific areas that are concerned with the mean field theory, a unified study of its mathematical structure has not been discussed explicitly in the open literature. The benefit of this point of view on nonlinear problems should have significant impact on future research, as will be seen from the underlying features of self-assembly or bottom-up self-organization which is to be illustrated in a unified way. The aim of this book is to formulate the variational and hierarchical aspects of the equations that arise in the mean field theory from macroscopic profiles to microscopic principles, from dynamics to equilibrium, and from biological models to models that arise from chemistry and physics.
