Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A complete, practical guide to the world's most popular signaling system, including SIGTRAN, GSM-MAP, and Intelligent Networks. Provides in-depth coverage of the SS7 protocols, including implementation details Covers SS7 over IP (SIGTRAN) using real-world examples Covers SS7/C7 from both a North American and European perspective, providing a broad international understanding of the technology and associated standards Explains mobile wireless concepts and signaling, including mobile application part (MAP) Provides a thorough explanation of the Intelligent Network (IN) and associated protocols (INAP/AIN) Signaling System No. 7 (SS7) is a signaling network and protocol that is used globally to bring telecommunications networks, both fixed-line and cellular, to life. SS7 has numerous applications and is at the very heart of telecommunications. Setting up phone calls, providing cellular roaming and messaging, and supplying converged voice and data services are only a few of the ways that SS7 is used in the communications network. SS7 also provides the point of interconnection between converging voice and data networks. This transition, which affects everyone who works with the data network, has bolstered the need for practical and applied information on SS7. In short, anyone who is interested in telecommunications should have a solid understanding of SS7. Signaling System No. 7 (SS7/C7): Protocol, Architecture, and Services will help you understand SS7 from several perspectives. It examines the framework and architecture of SS7, as well as how it is used to provide today's telecommunications services. It also examines each level of the SS7 protocol-all the way down to the bit level of messages. In addition, the SIGTRAN standards are discussed in detail, showing the migration from SS7 to IP and explaining how SS7 information is transported over IP.

Today, SS7 is used for data, voice, video, audio, and voice-over IP networks - and no other resource even comes close to providing such a complete understanding of the signaling network, its architecture, and protocols used to communicate through it like Travis Russell's "Signaling System #7." The author bypasses heavy-handed engineering and mathematical derivations, making this unique guide understandable even to novices and an informative easy-read for experienced pros who need to fill-in some essential knowledge gaps. Each chapter presents a readable discussion, followed by technical details such as parameters, message structures and bit values. Hands-on expert Russell, knowing exactly what you need for a crystal-clear understanding of SS7, also provides the technical details, protocol messages, and application examples. NEW TO THIS EDITION: * New coverage of SS7 over IP * A reorganized chapter structure that covers three levels: basic, intermediate, and advanced * CD-ROM containing the entire book in searchable PDF Here is the only resource you'll ever need to fully understand the "how's" and "why's" of Signaling System #7 - once you own it you'll understand why the "Russell book" is considered indispensable among telecommunication managers, engineers, technicians, and network mangers.

Book excerpt: Guidance to help you grasp even the most complex network structures and signaling protocols The Second Edition of Signaling in Telecommunication Networks has been thoroughly updated, offering new chapters and sections that cover the most recent developments in signaling systems and procedures. This acclaimed book covers subscriber and network signaling in both fixed and mobile networks. Coverage begins with an introduction to circuit-switched telephone networks, including an examination of trunks, exchanges, access systems, transmission systems, and other basic components. Next, the authors introduce signaling concepts, beginning with older Channel Associated Signaling (CAS) systems and progressing to today's Common Channel Signaling (CCS) systems. The book then examines packet networks and their use in transmitting voice (VoIP), TCP/IP protocols, VoIP signaling protocols, and ATM protocols. Throughout the book, the authors emphasize functionality, particularly the roles of individual protocols and how they fit in network architectures, helping readers grasp even the most complex network structures and signaling protocols. Highlights of the Second Edition include: Coverage of the latest developments and topics, including new chapters on access networks, intelligent network application part, signaling for voice communication in packet networks, and ATM signaling Drawings and tables that help readers understand and visualize complex systems Comprehensive, updated references for further study Examples to help readers make the bridge from theory to application With the continued growth and expansion of the telecommunications industry, the Second Edition is essential reading for telecommunications students as well as anyone involved in this dynamic industry needing a solid understanding of the different signaling systems and how they work. Moreover, the book helps readers wade through the voluminous and complex technical standards by providing the essential structure, terminology, and functionality needed to understand them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book we summarize important developments in telecommunications with a focus on Signalling System No. 7 (SS 7) network reliability. But why is SS 7 network security and reliability so important? According to the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) model the term “network” refers to the Layer 3 network service, which is offered by the Message Transfer Part (MTP) and Signalling Connection Control Part (SCCP) to higher layers. An SS 7 network outage results in a breakdown of signalling between the individual nodes of the network, so that telecommunication network services are no longer available to customers. Apart from the tremendous nancial damage to the network operator, the social consequences of such a network breakdown cannot be underestimated. Since the MTP is the central part of the SS 7 network, it is of crucial importance for network security and reliability. The MTP is published in different versions and should now be what we call “stable”. Is it really stable? Does it work properly in real networks? Does it t new requirements so that no further changes within the MTP are needed? Various different implementations have existed for a long time and are used in national as well as the international network. Due to this, an objective is not to p- form any further changes within the MTP in order to avoid compatibility problems with existing and running systems. Experience shows that compatibility problems are always related to further development of the MTP.

Book excerpt: Many wireless systems like GSM, GPRS, UMTS, Bluetooth, WLAN or WiMAX offer possibilities to keep people connected while on the move. In this flood of technology and claims that one single resource will serve all our needs, this book seeks to enable readers to examine and understand each technology, and how to utilise several different systems for the best results. Communication Systems for the Mobile Information Society not only contains a technical description of the different wireless systems available today, but also explains the thoughts that are behind the different mechanisms and implementations; not only the 'how' but also the 'why' is in focus. Thus the advantages and also limitations of each technology become apparent. Provides readers with a solid introduction to major global wireless standards and compares the different wireless technologies and their applications Describes the different systems based on the standards, their practical implementation and the design assumptions that were made The performance and capacity of each system in practice is analyzed and explained, accompanied with practical tips on how to discover the functionality of different networks by the readers themselves Questions at the end of each chapter and answers on the accompanying website make this book ideal for self study or as course material Illustrated with many realistic examples of how mobile people can stay in touch with other people, the Internet and their corporate intranet This book is an essential resource for telecommunication engineers, professionals and computer science and electrical engineering students who want to get a thorough end-to-end understanding of the different technical concepts of the systems on the market today.
