Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is well known that Jorge Luis Borges was a translator, but this has been considered a curious minor aspect of his literary achievement. Few have been aware of the number of texts he translated, the importance he attached to this activity, or the extent to which the translated works inform his own stories and poems. Between the age of ten, when he translated Oscar Wilde, and the end of his life, when he prepared a Spanish version of the Prose Edda , Borges transformed the work of Poe, Kafka, Hesse, Kipling, Melville, Gide, Faulkner, Whitman, Woolf, Chesterton, and many others. In a multitude of essays, lectures, and interviews Borges analyzed the versions of others and developed an engaging view about translation. He held that a translation can improve an original, that contradictory renderings of the same work can be equally valid, and that an original can be unfaithful to a translation. Borges's bold habits as translator and his views on translation had a decisive impact on his creative process. Translation is also a recurrent motif in Borges's stories. In "The Immortal," for example, a character who has lived for many centuries regains knowledge of poems he had authored, and almost forgotten, by way of modern translations. Many of Borges's fictions include actual or imagined translations, and some of his most important characters are translators. In "Pierre Menard, author of the Quixote," Borges's character is a respected Symbolist poet, but also a translator, and the narrator insists that Menard's masterpiece-his "invisible work"-adds unsuspected layers of meaning to Cervantes's Don Quixote. George Steiner cites this short story as "the most acute, most concentrated commentary anyone has offered on the business of translation." In an age where many discussions of translation revolve around the dichotomy faithful/unfaithful, this book will surprise and delight even Borges's closest readers and critics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Oxford Handbook of Jorge Luis Borges consists of thirty-five chapters, organized into four main categories: Borges's life, his representative work traced across the many decades of his writing, his work in collaboration, and his reception in literature and other disciplines. The volume highlights current debates among Borges scholars as a way to reevaluate how the physical forms and sociopolitical contexts of Borges's writings both shaped and determined specific readerships around the world. Alongside these novel approaches to Borges's fictions and nonfictions, this Handbook is the first of its kind to dedicate space to the reception of Borges's works in the fields of philosophy, the visual arts, film, political science, media theory, mathematics, and law. The collection also goes further to trace Borges's activity in the public sphere, including local and national politics and the functioning of cultural institutions. To date, no other collection devoted to his writings or life addresses these issues in depth, nor do they consider how his affiliations and interests change over the course of his long life. Incorporating these broader perspectives into this Handbook serves to bring out tensions, continuities, and discontinuities in Borges's work, allowing for a much more nuanced understanding of it. Jorge Luis Borges, literary studies, literary history, reception, Argentine literature, Latin American literature"--

The first set, collected in 1988 under the title In Memory of Borges, also contained work by Graham Greene and Mario Vargas Llosa." "The Borges Tradition, which includes essays by both imaginative writers and scholars, collects the lectures given from 1988 to 1993. The volume treats us to the subversive humour of Cuban-British novelist Guillermo Cabrera Infante; the late Angela Carter detailing Borges's imaginary zoo; Mexican writer Carlos Fuentes describing his early formative years in Buenos Aires; Simon Collier marking the 150th anniversary of the birth of W. H. Hudson; and the celebrated Argentine novelist, Adolfo Bioy-Casares, Borges's long-time friend and collaborator, holding an informal conversation with his audience." "Appendices include an important essay by Adolfo Bioy-Casares on his work with Borges and a checklist, compiled by Jason Wilson, of Argentine literature published in English between 1988 and 1993."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book excerpt: This book explores, through a multidisciplinary approach, the immense influence exerted by Bernard Shaw on the Spanish-speaking world on both sides of the Atlantic. This collection of essays encompasses the reception and dissemination of his ideas; the translation of his works into Spanish; the performance history of his plays in Spain and Latin America; and Shaw’s influence on many key figures of literature in Spanish. It begins by delving into Shaw’s knowledge of Spanish literature and gauging his acquaintance with the Spanish cultural milieu throughout his tenure as an art, music, and theatre critic. His early exposure to Spanish-speaking culture later made the return trip in the form of profuse critical reception and theatrical success in countries like Spain, Argentina, Mexico, and Uruguay. This allows for a more detailed investigation into the unmistakable mark that Bernard Shaw left in the oeuvre of leading Spanish-speaking authors like Ramiro de Maeztu, Jorge Luis Borges or Nemesio Canales. This volume also assesses the translations of Shaw’s works into Spanish—while also providing a detailed publication history of these translations.
