Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Short Story Press Presents Dad’s Down Under by Chad Collins Dad's Down Under chronicles the tumultuous-- and often humorous-- funeral of an emotionally abusive husband, told from the point of view of the man’s eighteen year old son. Present are the distant relatives and immediate family, all of whom have different recollections of what kind of man he was. His immediate family views him as a monster, while his side of the family remembers him as a kind, loving, and generous man. • A semi-autobiographical account written from the young mind of someone who has witnessed many of the events in the short story. • The perspective of an eighteen year old provides fresh and keen insight into the issue of domestic violence and how it impacts children in such harrowing circumstances. • The short story structure allows for a swift-- albeit emotionally satisfying-- journey through the funny and, at times dour, narrative. • The funeral setting allows for readers to relate to similar experiences of their own. • The narrative element of an uninvolved paternal figure is something many young readers will be able to relate to. Chad’s journey may also provide a source of comfort for youth unaware of how their similar situations will play out. Written by a prospective writer. The short story will be his first foray into the world of publishing. Short Story Press publishes short stories written by everyday writers.

Book excerpt: Set in Monrovia during the administration of Liberia's former president, Charles Taylor, this riveting debut is a story of recovery, atonement, and the continuing quest for peace and justice in a nation plagued by conflict and inequalities since its founding by freed American slaves. Life in post-war Liberia is not easy, and it is especially challenging for Bendu Lewis, a young woman who counsels traumatized survivors of Liberia's civil war while struggling with memories of her own war-time experiences. When the warlord who once held her in captivity suddenly shows up in town, she decides that for her own healing, and for the voiceless victims of the war, she must bring him to justice for his past atrocities. In her pursuit of Commander Cobra, Bendu finds much more than she bargained for, including the courage to finally confront and make amends for her own painful war-time secret.

Book excerpt: Short Story Press Presents Sense and Super Abilities by Matthew Kilpatrick “Sense and Super-Abilities” is a pastiche of the settings, style, and sort of characters usually associated with Jane Austen and Superlatives, superhuman characters similar to modern comic book heroes. Though it combines two previously existing elements, it is an original story and not a mash-up. Told as a first-person narrative by its main character, Catherine Eldenbrook, “Sense and Super-Abilities” details: • Catherine’s humble beginnings as a reclusive scientist’s daughter. • Her personal history, the death of her mother, and her long and loving relationship with Fanny, her robotic nursemaid and governess • Her transformation into an augmented being, and learning that it is her destiny to become a Superlative. • Her training under the other Superlatives, and her ultimate test coming from somewhere frighteningly close to home Readers hear Catherine’s story from Catherine herself. While she may begin as a simple country girl with no idea of going to London to train in the ways of combating ultimate evil, it is a fate that she learns is inescapable. She also learns that power, attaining it as well as using it wisely, can have dire and unexpected consequences. “Sense and Super-Abilities” is the tale of one girl’s coming of age, and how she learns to do what is right, even if it is not what comes easily. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bounded by desert and mountains, El Centro, California, is isolated and difficult to reach. However, its location close to the border between San Diego and Yuma, Arizona, has made it an important place for Mexican migrants attracted to the valley's agricultural economy. In 1945, it also became home to the El Centro Immigration Detention Camp. The Shadow of El Centro tells the story of how that camp evolved into the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Service Processing Center of the 2000s and became a national model for detaining migrants—a place where the policing of migration, the racialization of labor, and detainee resistance coalesced. Using government correspondence, photographs, oral histories, and private documents, Jessica Ordaz reveals the rise and transformation of migrant detention through this groundbreaking history of one detention camp. The story shows how the U.S. detention system was built to extract labor, to discipline, and to control migration, and it helps us understand the long and shadowy history of how immigration officials went from detaining a few thousand unauthorized migrants during the 1940s to confining hundreds of thousands of people by the end of the twentieth century. Ordaz also uncovers how these detained migrants have worked together to create transnational solidarities and innovative forms of resistance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Criminality has accompanied social life from the outset. It has appeared at every stage of the development of every community, regardless of organisation, form of government or period in history. This work presents the views of criminologists from Central Europe on the phenomenon of criminality as a component of social and political reality. Despite the far advanced homogenisation of culture and the coming together of the countries that make up the European Union, criminality is not easily captured by statistics and simple comparisons. There can be huge variation not only on crime reporting systems and information on convicts but also on definitions of the same crimes and their formulations in the criminal codes of the individual European countries. This book fills a gap in the English-language criminological literature on the causes and determinants of criminality in Central Europe. Poland, as the largest country in the region, whose political post-war path has been similar to the other countries in this part of Europe, is subject to an exhaustive and original look at criminality as part of the political and social reality. The authors offer a contribution to the debate in the social and criminal policy of the state over the problems of criminality and how to control it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Short Story Press Presents White-Out Man by Janet Marie Lewis Everyone it seems wonders, at some point in their lives, what will happen when they eventually stand before the “Pearly Gates”? One man seems stuck somewhere between, in a groundhog effect, approaching and re-approaching the Gates in a repeatedly futile attempt to attain a bottle of white-out. In order to follow standard protocol, the clerk must annotate on the requisition form what exactly the white-out is being used for. Peter is his name, and he has seen the White-Out Man many times over the past months and his patience is running thin. As he inquires of the reasoning behind the request, White-Out Man becomes irate and difficult, overheard by Peter’s Boss who intervenes on the intercom. White-Out Man is haggard, and doesn’t seem to realize that the same old mistakes can’t be covered up over, and over again. The file-purging time approaches yet again, and he has discovered that before he can purge, his form needs to be clean, hence the necessity of the white-out. He also doesn’t recognize that he is in impeding danger of being hauled down the seemingly endless stairs to the “Sub-levels”. Poor White-Out Man, he knows what lies down in the Sub-levels; but is unsure if there is any way to avoid them other than to white-out his mistakes time and again. This rare metaphorical work, White-Out Man, broaches age-old questions of humanity in a purely science fiction manner that most people today can relate to. In a world that is all but overcome by technology and requisite red tape, where not even a simple pen can be accessed without filling out a form, it seems all but impossible to maintain any semblance of composure. The question is… will we be faced with these same or similar endless circles of frustration and bureaucracy even after our time on Earth is complete? Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cancel culture addresses real harm...and sometimes causes more. It’s time to think this through. “Cancel” or “call-out” culture is a source of much tension and debate in American society. The infamous “Harper’s Letter,” signed by public intellectuals of both the left and right, sought to settle the matter and only caused greater division. Originating as a way for marginalized and disempowered people to take down more powerful abusers, often with the help of social media, cancel culture is seen by some as having gone “too far.” Adrienne maree brown, a respected cultural voice and a professional mediator, reframes the discussion for us, in a way that points to possible ways beyond the impasse. Most critiques of cancel culture come from outside the milieus that produce it, sometimes from even from its targets. Brown explores the question from a Black, queer, and feminist viewpoint that gently asks, how well does this practice serve us? Does it prefigure the sort of world we want to live in? And, if it doesn’t, how do we seek accountability and redress for harm in a way that reflects our values?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book unravels the institutions surrounding witchcraft in the central Indian state of Chhattisgarh through theoretical and empirical research on witchcraft, violence and modernity in contemporary times. The author pieces together ‘fragments’ of stories gathered utilising ethnographic methods to examine the meanings associated with witches and witchcraft, and how they connect with social relations, gender, notions of agency, law, media and the state. The volume uses the metaphor of the shattered urn to tell the story of the accusations, punishment, rescue and the aftermath of the events of the trial of women accused of being witches. It situates the ṭonhī or witch as a key elaborating symbol that orders behaviour to determine who the socially included and excluded are in communities. Through the personal interviews and other ethnographic methods conducted over the course of many years, the author delves into the stories and practices related to witchcraft, its relations with modernity, and the relationship between violence and ideological norms in society. Insightful and detailed, this book will be of great interest to academics and researchers of anthropology, development studies, sociology, history, violence, gender studies, tribal studies and psychology. It will also be useful for readers in both historic and contemporary witchcraft practices as well as policy makers.
