Book excerpt: When Simon Callow met the Yugoslav film director Dusan Makavejev to discuss his new film Manifesto, they both greatly looked forward to working together. Only months later the two were barely speaking. A companion volume to Being An Actor, Shooting the Actor is a funny and disastrous account of a film made in the former Yugoslavia, together with new essays on film and film acting including Callow's work in Amadeus and Four Weddings and a Funeral. Shooting the Actor reveals more about the process of filmmaking and the highly complex nature of the role of both actor and director than any formal guide could ever provide.

Book Synopsis Terror and Joy by : Lorraine Mortimer
Download or read book Terror and Joy written by Lorraine Mortimer and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dusan Makavejev is a filmmaker, teacher, and intellectual whose films intersect with major historical and political upheavals in Eastern Europe--World War II, the unification and breakup of Yugoslavia, and the fall of communism. Subversive and moving, his films remain touchstones for transcultural and political cinema. Matching the intensity of the films, Lorraine Mortimer takes a radically interdisciplinary approach in this first book-length critical analysis of Makavejev's work. Studies in contrasts, Makavejev's films combine documentary and fiction, tragedy and comedy. Mortimer examines seven of his films made between 1965 and 1994--including Montenegro (1981), Sweet Movie (1974), and WR: Mysteries of the Organism (1971)--looking at them historically, politically, and aesthetically and highlighting their implications for the contemporary world. Both Makavejev's films and Mortimer's scrutiny of them are haunted by the specter of apocalyptic revolutionary movements that sacrifice people and the planet in the name of ideologies and idealisms. Mortimer argues that the aesthetic dimension is vital to our conception of old and new tribalisms and, ultimately, our understanding of being in the world.
Book Synopsis Screening Modernism by : András Bálint Kovács
Download or read book Screening Modernism written by András Bálint Kovács and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2008-09-15 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Casting fresh light on the renowned productions of auteurs like Antonioni, Fellini, and Bresson and drawing out from the shadows a range of important but lesser-known works, Screening Modernism is the first comprehensive study of European art cinema’s postwar heyday. Spanning from the 1950s to the 1970s, András Bálint Kovács’s encyclopedic work argues that cinematic modernism was not a unified movement with a handful of styles and themes but rather a stunning range of variations on the core principles of modern art. Illustrating how the concepts of modernism and the avant-garde variously manifest themselves in film, Kovács begins by tracing the emergence of art cinema as a historical category. He then explains the main formal characteristics of modern styles and forms as well as their intellectual foundation. Finally, drawing on modernist theory and philosophy along the way, he provides an innovative history of the evolution of modern European art cinema. Exploring not only modernism’s origins but also its stylistic, thematic, and cultural avatars, Screening Modernism ultimately lays out creative new ways to think about the historical periods that comprise this golden age of film.
Book Synopsis The Cinema of Hal Hartley by : Sebastian Manley
Download or read book The Cinema of Hal Hartley written by Sebastian Manley and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2013-07-18 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most significant contributors to the American independent cinema that developed over the late 1980s and 1990s, Hal Hartley has throughout his career created films that defy convention and capture the stranger realities of modern American life. The Cinema of Hal Hartley looks at all of Hartley's film releases - from cult classics such as The Unbelievable Truth and Trust to oddball genre experiments such as No Such Thing and Fay Grim to short films such as Opera No. 1 and Accomplice - and makes a case for seeing Hartley as an important and successful American auteur, despite the director's decline in status in the later stages of his career. Employing both industrial and close textual analysis, the book considers aspects of Hartley's work such as genre, gender and form, as well as dimensions far less frequently discussed in studies of indie directors, such as place and cultural identity, offering a broad and innovative study of a productive filmmaker who continues to show a singular disregard for the expectations of both the mainstream and the indie cinema industries.
