Another series of the adventures of Sherlock Holmes as reported by his faithful biographer Dr. Watson and it becomes clearer than ever that the real draw of these stories is the fascinating character of Holmes himself. The mysteries are secondary to the enjoyment, though many of them do prove to have distinct elements of interest (otherwise why would the great detective have bothered himself about them?), but it really is in observing the fascinating character of Holmes himself that the reader is immersed in them. Indeed, this collection provides a rare treat for the reader in that we learn more about the detective and his early life and connections than has previously been the case. Of course one can’t leave off discussion of this volume without making mention of “The Final Problem” the story in which Holmes’ greatest adversary Moriarty, the Napoleon of Crime, is born. After months of playing cat-and-mouse with Moriarty and his insidious league of crime Holmes finally has gathered the pieces he needs to crush the vast criminal organization and its most dangerous leader. Moriarty, of course, is not likely to take such a possibility lying down and thus we have a final chase across London and Switzerland that ends in Watson’s final realization of what has happened to his friend.

Book excerpt: Winner of the 1999 Edgar Award for Best Biographical Work, this is "an excellent biography of the man who created Sherlock Holmes" (David Walton, The New York Times Book Review) This fresh, compelling biography examines the extraordinary life and strange contrasts of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the struggling provincial doctor who became the most popular storyteller of his age. From his youthful exploits aboard a whaling ship to his often stormy friendships with such figures as Harry Houdini and George Bernard Shaw, Conan Doyle lived a life as gripping as one of his adventures. Exhaustively researched and elegantly written, Daniel Stashower's Teller of Tales sets aside many myths and misconceptions to present a vivid portrait of the man behind the legend of Baker Street, with a particular emphasis on the Psychic Crusade that dominated his final years--the work that Conan Doyle himself felt to be "the most important thing in the world."

Book excerpt: The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes was initially published in 1894 after each of the individual stories contained within had appeared separately in The Strand magazine. This collection was the follow-up to The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes which introduced the detective and his loyal companion Dr. John Watson. The Memoirs are generally considered the superior to the collection which introduced the detective, but not as strong as the stories he solved in the next collection following his resurrection. Yes, indeed, The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes draws to a close with Dr. John Watson disconsolate in his conviction that Holmes and his nemesis Prof. Moriarty fell to their deaths after a struggle atop Reichenbach Falls. Before Sherlock has that fateful meeting which may or not have played out as Watson imagines, he embarks upon a series of adventures that start off with a bang with his clever solving of the disappearance of a missing racehorse thanks to what the dog infamously did not do in the night. After that is a memorable tale of sibling rivalry and revenge gone wrong that kicks off with the arrival of one of the most gruesome clues in any Holmes mystery: two severed ears inside a box delivered to a home.

Book excerpt: This enthralling collection of Sherlock Holmes adventures comprises the first two volumes of short stories--The Adventures and The Memoirs--as they were originally gathered together in book form, with 12 adventures in each volume The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes contains four of Conan Doyle's own all-time favorite Holmes mysteries, "The Adventure of the Speckled Band," "The Red-Headed League," "A Scandal in Bohemia," and "The Five Orange Pips." The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes has another three of Conan Doyle's favorites in "The Adventure of the Reigate Squire," "The Adventure of the Musgrave Ritual," and "The Adventure of the Final Problem." It is in "The Final Problem," of course, that Dr. Watson sadly reports the death of Holmes at the Reichenbach Falls near Meiringen in Switzerland. Holmes's titanic struggle with his arch enemy, Professor Moriarty, had seen them both apparently plunge over a sheer drop, although Watson never actually saw Holmes's body. This was Conan Doyle's attempt to bring an end to Holmes's adventures, but he was to be resurrected by popular demand eight years later. The Memoirs also includes "The Adventure of the Greek Interpreter," in which Holmes's brother, Mycroft, appears for the first time and "The Adventure of the Gloria Scott," in which Holmes describes to Watson his very first case.

Had she not been a woman, she would have been set to inherit a large amount of money. Nevertheless, she is known to have expensive jewellery. Watson comes to Switzerland to investigate as Holmes has to stay in London. His only is clue: a bearded man was pestering her. "The Disappearance of Lady Frances Carfax" is part of "His Last Bow". Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930) was born in Scotland and studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh. After his studies, he worked as a ship’s surgeon on various boats. During the Second Boer War, he was an army doctor in South Africa. When he came back to the United Kingdom, he opened his own practice and started writing crime books. He is best known for his thrilling stories about the adventures of Sherlock Holmes. He published four novels and more than 50 short-stories starring the detective and Dr Watson, and they play an important role in the history of crime fiction. Other than the Sherlock Holmes series, Doyle wrote around thirty more books, in genres such as science-fiction, fantasy, historical novels, but also poetry, plays, and non-fiction.
