Download or read book Inner Lives written by Paula Johnson and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2004-03-01 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An intimate collection of African American women's voices on their lives in prison The rate of women entering prison has increased nearly 400 percent since 1980, with African American women constituting the largest percentage of this population. However, despite their extremely disproportional representation in correctional institutions, little attention has been paid to their experiences within the criminal justice system. Inner Lives provides readers the rare opportunity to intimately connect with African American women prisoners. By presenting the women's stories in their own voices, Paula C. Johnson captures the reality of those who are in the system, and those who are working to help them. Johnson offers a nuanced and compelling portrait of this fastest-growing prison population by blending legal history, ethnography, sociology, and criminology. These striking and vivid narratives are accompanied by equally compelling arguments by Johnson on how to reform our nation's laws and social policies, in order to eradicate existing inequalities. Her thorough and insightful analysis of the historical and legal background of contemporary criminal law doctrine, sentencing theories, and correctional policies sets the stage for understanding the current system.

Book Synopsis The Story of S. by : Annalisse Mayer
Download or read book The Story of S. written by Annalisse Mayer and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2001-06-17 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What if…..? After the death of JFK, Jr., the press was flooded with mesmerizing pictures of him, not to mention some rather lurid tabloid articles. The author found herself drawn into repeated, obsessive fantasies of what knowing him or having a romance with him might have been like. Ultimately, she found herself writing down one of her fantasies as a novel. She changed the names to make clear that this is entirely a work of fiction, her own fantasies, not actually about the real people who inspired her writing. She wove in her own life experiences: her son's Asperger's Syndrome, home birth, and information from a suicide prevention course. She also could not resist drawing in some pet political issues, for instance regarding abortion, pesticide spraying, and drug legalization. The result is an eminently readable romance and psychological study, which should enthrall any woman of a certain age who fantasizes about younger celebrities or anyone who is interested in Asperger's Syndrome.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There was a time when the average American woman was more likely to die from childbirth than from any other condition except tuberculosis. This was especially true in areas where hospitals and quality medical care were scarce or nonexistent. But deep in the rolling hills of eastern Kentucky's Cumberland Range, one woman almost single-handedly changed those dismal figures. Her name was Mary Breckinridge, and her goal was to introduce quality, professionally trained midwifery to the United States. The Frontier Nursing Service, opened in 1925 in Leslie County, Kentucky, set out to meet the health needs of women and infants in one of the poorest regions of America. This book tells the story of Breckinridge's unparalleled dedication to midwifery and provides a historical overview of the first 40 years of the Frontier Nursing Service.

Are all these C-sections necessary, or are some of them done simply for the sake of convenience? Inductions seem to be the norm, but are they always needed? Today, expectant mothers are often left feeling powerless, as their instincts are replaced by drugs and routine medical procedures. What you are about to discover is that you have a choice, and you have the power to plan the kind of birth that's right for you-whether it is at a birth center, a hospital, or at home. In Your Best Birth, internationally known advocates of informed choice Ricki Lake and Abby Epstein inspire women to take back the birth experience, with essential advice on: Positive and negative effects of epidurals, Pitocin, and other drugs and interventions Inducing vs. allowing your labor to progress naturally The truth behind our country's staggering C-section rate Assembling your birth team and creating your birth plan. With chapters such as "Obstetricians: Finding Dr. Right," "Epidurals: You Haven't Got Time for the Pain," and "Electronic Monitors: Reading between the Lines," Lake and Epstein will encourage you to consider whatever your doctor, mother, and best friend may suggest in a new light. The book also includes inspiring birth stories, including those from well-known personalities, such as Laila Ali and Cindy Crawford. This book is like a good friend giving wise counsel." -- Judy Norsigian, co-editor of Our Bodies, Ourselves: Pregnancy and Birth and Executive Director, Our Bodies Ourselves
Book Synopsis Mothers, Midwives and Reimagining Birthing in the South Bronx by : Jennifer Dohrn
Download or read book Mothers, Midwives and Reimagining Birthing in the South Bronx written by Jennifer Dohrn and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-12-10 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women came through the doors at a community-based birthing center in the South Bronx seeking prenatal care. They had heard about the center from a neighbor, a parents' group at their children’s school, or the local mosque or church. What they found when they arrived was a brightly-colored waiting area that resembled a living room, children immersed in games in a corner, and staff that reflected the mosaic of cultures living in the surrounding apartments. They also met midwives who asked about their lives, their children, their families and traditions. If pregnancies developed complications, back-up obstetricians were there to give higher levels of care, with the women returning to the midwifery center afterwards. The results were healthy mothers and healthy babies. For over twenty years the center became a haven for women’s health care and a national exemplar. It is a tragic and unjust paradox that the United States, the highest income country in the world and the country with the largest budget for perinatal care, has rising rates of maternal mortality that disproportionately affect women of color. Yet an inner-city maternity center with midwifery care found solutions to the challenge of making birth safe for low-income populations, especially women of color. This oral history presents the stories of twelve women who participated in this care. As they tell it, the experience changed their lives and their understanding of what safe, quality maternal care can achieve. Jennifer Dohrn examines the systems that perpetuate disparities in care, from global to local, and describes essential components needed for change, using oral histories as evidence for the way forward towards maternal health as a human right.
Book Synopsis "Women, Workers, and Race in LIFE Magazine " by : Dolores Flamiano
Download or read book "Women, Workers, and Race in LIFE Magazine " written by Dolores Flamiano and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The tension between social reform photography and photojournalism is examined through this study of the life and work of German ?gr?ansel Mieth (1909-1998), who made an unlikely journey from migrant farm worker to Life photographer. She was the second woman in that role, after Margaret Bourke-White. Unlike her colleagues, Mieth was a working-class reformer with a deep disdain for Life's conservatism and commercialism. In fact, her work often subverted Life's typical representations of women, workers, and minorities. Some of her most compelling photo essays used skillful visual storytelling to offer fresh views on controversial topics: birth control, vivisection, labor unions, and Japanese American internment during the Second World War. Her dual role as reformer and photojournalist made her a desirable commodity at Life in the late 1930s and early 40s, but this role became untenable in Cold War America, when her career was cut short. Today Mieth's life and photographs stand as compelling reminders of the vital yet overlooked role of immigrant women in twentieth-century photojournalism. Women, Workers, and Race in LIFE Magazine draws upon a rich array of primary sources, including Mieth's unpublished memoir, oral histories, and labor archives. The book seeks to unravel and understand the multi-layered, often contested stories of the photographer's life and work. It will be of interest to scholars of photography history, women's studies, visual culture, and media history.

Download or read book Black, Pregnant and Loving It written by Yvette Allen-Campbell and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2016-12-27 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Yvette Allen-Campbell and Dr. Suzanne Greenidge-Hewitt have created the ultimate pregnancy guide for today's black woman. Most pregnancy books are geared towards white culture in language and approach as well as health issues. While most of the development is the same regardless of race, there are health and cultural issues specific to women of color. But the biggest point of difference is a book written by black women- an educator and a top doctor - for black women. Black, Pregnant and Loving It includes information on the specific health issues common to pregnant black women, from hyperventilating to dehydration, as well as skin and hair concerns. You'll learn how to select a doctor or midwife, which diet is best for you and your baby, how to identify your body's needs as well as a month-by-month view of what to expect. In addition, there are also flashbacks to older methods of childbirth and black folk myths and superstitions.Overall this is a complete pregnancy guide rooted in modern science for the health and well-being of the black community.
