Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his collection of short stories, the author charts the life of Shay Elliott, Ireland's first professional cyclist, as he struggles to compete against riders in a peloton saturated with performance enhancing drugs. After he returned to Ireland he died in a shotgun accident while making plans to coach amateur cyclists. We are taken to a meeting of Washington politicians, which culminated in the unlawful invasion of Iraq; a tragic, obscene war encouraged by Pentagon hawks and self-serving gentlemen of the right. Commandeered oil, outsourced waterboarding and enhanced torture techniques in defiance of Article One of the Geneva Convention, are imprimatured in cautious Machiavellian dialogue. We witness the insane cluster bombing of the virtually defenceless city of Baghdad; with its medieval clay and plaster dwellings that crumble to dust in air raids. We visit broken, mutilated children in Baghdad's Al Kindi Hospital. We are taken to a chateau on the outskirts of Paris, the headquarters of the Aryan Brotherhood in France. The Aryans have devised a new strategy, a panacea to erase the simmering tensions of class warfare in French society. The goal is to create a new social order by restoring the privileged bourgeois to power; condemning the general populace to serfdom, through the science of eugenics. In 'Up at the Palace', Borstal detainees face the darkness of unspoken cruelties; a dignitary of the church faces his demons. We visit Alaska, the last remaining wilderness left on earth. Raging storms in the Bering Sea threaten life and limb aboard the good ship ' Tacoma.' A super sleuth, Marc Claudel, of the French Surete, becomes involved in terrorism and murder.

Some of the most famous and illustrious races were founded by newspapermen and The Cycling Anthology continues this tradition by bringing together the best in the business. Volume Four features original and exclusive pieces by leading cycling writers. William Fotheringham remembers the journalist who was instrumental in bringing road-racing to a British audience; Ellis Bacon looks beyond Queen to the link between bikes and beats; Richard Moore finds out what happened to that ‘little punk’ (Lance Armstrong’s words), Iban Mayo, and asks if he really did become a long-distance lorry driver; Daniel Friebe re-examines the ups and downs of Marco Pantani; Tom Southam explains what it’s like not to ride the Tour de France; and much more. Between them, these writers have covered hundreds of Tours de France and written dozens of excellent books and some have even ridden the Tour. Here, their work is showcased together.

Book excerpt: From the day he joined a ramshackle Kenyan cycling club made up of orphans and street children, Chris Froome was destined for greatness. Froome: the Ride of his Life chronicles Froome's journey from the dusty mountain tracks outside Nairobi to the historic roads of the world's most famous bicycle race and his victory in the 2013 Tour de France. It's a journey that begins by learning to fix punctures in a Kenyan village under the mentorship of his long-time friend David Kinjah. It's the story of a boy who once sold avocados on the side of the road and lived with his mother in the servants' quarters at the back of a lavish homestead in Nairobi, but who had a free spirit and a drive to follow his dream. From his challenges and triumphs on the road to the tragedy of his mother's death, Froome emerges as a man apart but loyal and compassionate to those nearest to him as he sought to capture road cycling's ultimate prize - the Tour de France. From Africa to the Alps, this is the story of Africa's greatest cycling moment. This is the ride of Chris Froome's life.

Book excerpt: The Memory Man – a sobriquet earned for his uncanny ability to recall virtually any sporting trivia – not only gives us his entertaining and forensic insight into which sporting moments he believes can be justifiably described as in a Different Class, but sports fans will also be thrilled to finally discover who Jimmy Magee really thinks is the best of the best – or the most over-rated for that matter – in soccer, GAA, rugby, boxing, golf, athletics and many other sports. The maestro of memories has anecdotes about the hundreds of iconic sport heroes he has had the privilege of meeting during his travels. The pages of Different Class are bursting with legendary figures: Muhammad Ali, Pelé, Eddie Merckx, Maradona and Matt Busby. Fans of Irish sport won't be disappointed either, with Jimmy Magee casting a critical eye over the likes of George Best, Katie Taylor, Jack Charlton, Seán Kelly, Brian O'Driscoll, Rory McIlroy, Stephen Roche, Roy Keane, Sonia O'Sullivan, and virtually anyone who's been anybody in the GAA. With such a stellar cast, this book is definitely in a Different Class.
