Book excerpt: Nurse Edie Spence is once again called upon to save a life...and this time, it's personal. Can her new community of zombies, vampires, and shapeshifters come to her rescue when she needs them most? When Edie was fired from her paranormal nursing job at County Hospital, her whole world came crashing down. Now she's is once again shaken to her core. Her mother is deathly ill and there's only one thing that will save her: vampire blood. But with the paranormal community shunning Edie, where can she obtain it...without losing her own life in the process? SHAPESHIFTED Edie hopes to procure it at her new job at the clinic across town, where the forces of evil loom large. Vampire gang wars are rampant. Old underground enemies are rising to the surface. And Edie's zombie ex-boyfriend has arrived at the scene-but is he the same man he used to be? And what should she make of the enigmatic doctor with whom she shares an unexpected connection? She'll have to figure it out soon, because all hell is about to break loose-literally-and time is running out... "Shapeshifted is the third Cassie Alexander novel I've read, and I enjoyed it just as much as the first. Edie Spence, Alexander's nurse protagonist, has a real talent for getting into trouble and somehow getting out of it, but each time she seems to have sacrificed something, even if it's only her couch. And she's so often sleep-deprived, I worry a little about her patients. But Edie is loyal and tough and determined, and these are all characteristics you want in an urban fantasy hero...We can all look forward to what happens next."--New York Times bestselling author Charlaine Harris

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: SHAPESHIFTERS are people with animal medicine, people who can connect with and use their animal powers. Those with access to this magical power can shift mentally, astrally, or even physically into their power animal or totem. Rosalyn Greene's ability to shift, both mentally and astrally, combined with her extensive study of the secret shapeshifting folklore, has resulted in this fascinating examination of all aspects and forms of shifting. This unique book helps you realize your potential for being a shapeshifter, giving detailed explanations about how the various forms of shifting occur. She shows you how to distinguish powerful visions, anxiety attacks, and imagination from real shifting, as well as how to recognize the warning signs of an imminent shift. Since there can be dangers and risks on both the mundane and psychic levels when you pursue the path of a shifter, many of the potential dangers associated with specific practices are carefully outlined. Shapeshifting is a spiritual journey, a very tough one, but very rewarding, linking us with both the fundamental power of animals and with the higher self. It has a purpose and reality far beyond simply using shifter abilities for earthly benefits; it can lead us through the unseen veil that separates us from our Selves.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Journeys with animals for personal transformation and enlightenment • Reveals how shapeshifting with the animal kingdom allows us to experience different forms of consciousness and expand our perception of the world • Examines the three phases of transforming consciousness: letting go, opening to experience, and integrating awareness • Explores how shapeshifting provides an understanding of death as a transformation rather than an ending In Shapeshifting with Our Animal Companions, Dawn Baumann Brunke moves beyond the “how” and “why” of animal communication presented in her earlier books to a profound journey of shared spiritual awareness. Through conversations, dreams, and merged consciousness with a variety of animals and spirit beings, she reveals the vast treasure of wisdom and experiences offered to us as we open ourselves to the consciousness of others, confront and release our fears of death, and expand our sensory perception to include other modes of existence. Brunke reveals how by shapeshifting--moving in and out of shared awareness with others and particularly animals--we may better understand and embrace the diversity of consciousness in our world as we learn to awaken our true selves. Through encounters with shapeshifting animal teachers, she explores the three stages of transforming consciousness: letting go of old ideas and habitual modes of perception, experiencing different forms of consciousness through the eyes of others, and integrating these experiences into a greater awareness of our own being--thus discovering the deeper nature of who we all really are.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume was first published by Inter-Disciplinary Press in 2014. The body is unveiled, not as a terra incognita, but as terra to be rediscovered. The authors – whose diverse origins echo the multiple media used to convey their ideas – establish a link between bodily metamorphosis and psychological fissures. The body is a locus of paradoxes: deformed, infected, monstrosized or negated but at the same time fascinating, intimate or sensual. Here, readers will open the door of disruption. They will explore the flesh or the inner processes of the body, the idea of its degeneration, even its perception as a gaping wound. The authors in this volume question the very notion of identity as they embark on a journey to reflect on the self. Life itself is a shapeshifting dance we unknowingly join in its myriad of colours and moves.

How have digital media changed the way we write and read? What methods of textual and data analysis have emerged? How do we rescue digital artifacts from obsolescence? And how can digital media be used or taught inside classrooms? These and other questions are addressed in this volume that assembles contributions by artists, writers, scholars and editors such as Dene Grigar, Sandy Baldwin, Carlos Reis, and Frieder Nake. They offer a multiperspectival view on the way digital media have changed our notion of textuality.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Smallpox, measles, and typhus. The scourges of lethal disease—as threatening in colonial Mesoamerica as in other parts of the world—called for widespread efforts and enlightened attitudes to battle the centuries-old killers of children and adults. Even before edicts from Spain crossed the Atlantic, colonial elites oftentimes embraced medical experimentation and reform in the name of the public good, believing it was their moral responsibility to apply medical innovations to cure and prevent disease. Their efforts included the first inoculations and vaccinations against smallpox, new strategies to protect families and communities from typhus and measles, and medical interventions into pregnancy and childbirth. For All of Humanity examines the first public health campaigns in Guatemala, southern Mexico, and Central America in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Martha Few pays close attention to Indigenous Mesoamerican medical cultures, which not only influenced the shape and scope of those regional campaigns but also affected the broader New World medical cultures. The author reconstructs a rich and complex picture of the ways colonial doctors, surgeons, Indigenous healers, midwives, priests, government officials, and ordinary people engaged in efforts to prevent and control epidemic disease. Few’s analysis weaves medical history and ethnohistory with social, cultural, and intellectual history. She uses prescriptive texts, medical correspondence, and legal documents to provide rich ethnographic descriptions of Mesoamerican medical cultures, their practitioners, and regional pharmacopeia that came into contact with colonial medicine, at times violently, during public health campaigns.

Book excerpt: The pagan mythology of the Vikings offers a rich metaphor for consciousness. This book presents the cosmography of Norse mythology as a landscape of human inner life. Each of the nine worlds of this cosmography is viewed as a symbol of a distinct type of consciousness that is emblematic of a particular perspective or way of relating to others. Individual gods and goddesses are considered nuanced personifications of their worlds. The philosophy of pagan mythology is explored by comparing and contrasting the Sayings of Odin from the Norse Edda with the Christian Ten Commandments.
